Chloe Comes To The Comics - Finally!
They've been talking about it for years and now Newsarama.com has confirmed that the character of Chloe Sullivan will be making her way into DC Comics continuity with issue #674 of Superman, hitting comic book stores on March 12.

Superman editor Matt Idelson told Newsarama that "their" version of Chloe will be similar but at the same time different from the character fans know and love on Smallville. “‘Our’ Chloe is clearly inspired by the Smallville character, right down to wanting to be a journalist, and being roughly the same age as the Smallville character. And she’s still Lois’ cousin. Beyond that, though, since she’s obviously a different age than Clark and Lana, she’s got to be her own, unique character," Idelaon says.

Writer Kurt Busiek expanded on this idea. “The problem we'd have faced if we brought her in with the same background as the TV show is that she'd fill two basic roles -- the Girl from Back Home and the Reporter -- and those roles are both pretty solidly filled in the adult Superman cast, by Lana and Lois. So she's got to have a different spin, one that lets her occupy a different role from either of them. She's the younger sister of someone Clark went to school with, not a classmate of Clark's herself. As a result, she's the new intern at the Daily Planet, fresh out of journalism school and itching to make a name for herself. That'll make her clearly different from Lois and Lana, and at the same time more familiar to watchers of the show.” Busiek has also pointed out that this "Chloe" will not know Clark's secret, nor will she have super powers.

Strike Update: Actors Assemble!

See some images of the Smallville writers peacefully striking, including the picture you see to your right

On Tuesday, November 13, actors from dozens of television series joined their series' writers to show their support at a rally outside of the Universal Studios lot.

Smallville was joined by actors Michael Cassidy (Grant Gabriel), John Glover (Lionel Luthor), and Phil Morris (John Jones).

Here's an update from Al Gough himself:

It was a great afternoon at Universal as over 2500 writers and actors joined the fight for our collective futures (professionally speaking). We had John Glover, Michael Cassidy and Phil Morris out there supporting the cause. Others from the cast wanted to be there, particularly Michael Rosenbaum, but the show is still in production and most of the cast lives in Vancouver. We know they were with us in spirit, as we are all in this together.

Statement From Gough & Millar On The Writers' Strike

See some images of the Smallville writers peacefully participating in the strike from today (Nov. 6)

Yesterday we posted an article here on KryptonSite about writers of television and movies now being on strike. Now, we can report on this with added clarity, as we received the following statement from Smallville's executive producers and creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

As of 12:01 am yesterday, our entire writing staff is on strike. That means that the pencils went down and there won't be any more scripts until our guild, the WGA, receives a fair deal from the studios and networks. The biggest sticking point is residuals on the internet and new media. Residuals are the amount a writer gets paid every time an episode or movie they wrote is rebroadcast. Right now there is no formula in place for internet downloads. So any episode of any show that you download on iTunes or other such services, or watch for free at one of the network's ad-supported websites, the writer gets nothing. I think we can all agree that is unfair.

Screenwriting isn't like other professions. There is no guarantee of employment week to week or year to year. It is a feast or famine business, and when the music stops, you may not still have a chair. As a film school teacher once described it -- you can't make a living, but you can make a killing. It is those times when you are working that you have to plan for the future, because it doesn't last forever. Miles and I have been writing together for 15 years now. Each year I wonder if this is when it all comes crashing down.

I know that if most people have even heard of a screen or television writer, it is usually someone high profile and rich. However, the majority of writers in our guild are middle class. They live paycheck to paycheck. Residuals are what get you through the lean times, so that you can continue doing what you love for as long as you can, and still support your family.

Please understand that no writer wanted a strike, but the issues we are fighting for will determine not only our future in the digital age, but the future of generations of writers to come. If we don't take a stand now, that future will look pretty bleak.

We were able to complete scripts for 15 episodes. Episode 15 is a cliffhanger. To the best of my knowledge, the studio plans to produce all of them. If there isn't a quick resolution, then the season ends in February. It is our wish that this strike will be resolved quickly so that we can get back to doing what we love -- writing.

From the entire writing staff, thank you for your continued support.

Up, up and away!

Al Gough & Miles Millar

"He's clinically insane," Cain says. "The guy kills me. He's going to have an interesting career. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Rosenbaum. He's a pretty dynamic fellow."

Dean also says that it was a little confusing not being the "Clark" in this Superman story. "It was odd having someone else say Clark Kent and someone else being Clark and me not being Clark," he says to Zap2It. "That was a little odd. There was the inevitable, 'OK, everybody freeze. We'll do some super-speeding...' I'm like, 'Wow, that's the first time the super speed is happening, and I'm not doing it.'

New "Live 7" Neilsen ratings are now being released revealing how many viewers are digitally recording their shows and saving to watch them later. Smallville benefited greatly from DVR use, with over 800,000 extra viewers tuning in to see the show's season premiere.

The viewer bump also helped lift Smallville up to #70 for the week, from #76 where it sat without DVR taken into account. Considering the very competitive timeslot, this is good news for the show, and if the DVR trend continues, it would put every episode of Season Seven at over five million viewers.

New Shows Added To The KryptonSite Forum!
Ever since 2001, the KryptonSite Forum has been a premier location to discuss Smallville... but did you know there are other TV shows you can talk about there as well?

We've added some current and upcoming shows to the mix, with more on the way. Also, the forums are scheduled for a new look and an upgrade soon, so stay tuned for that!

Here are the new additions to the forum:

Bionic Woman - Coinciding with our latest site, BionicWebsite.com, it's a forum focusing on the new Bionic Woman TV series, premiering Sept. 26 on NBC!

Doctor Who & Torchwood: The Whoniverse
- A more organized place to discuss Doctor Who and its spin-off series - Torchwood (premiering in the U.S. on BBC America in early September!) and the Sarah Jane Adventures, featuring the Doctor's best companion in incredibly childish situations!

Reaper - Sam Oliver's parents sold his soul to the Devil, and now he's featured in his own show every week on Tuesdays at 9 on the CW! The pilot episode is directed by Kevin Smith (Clarks, Mallrats, Dogma, and of course Jay & Silent Bob) and it's quite entertaining. And of course Missy Peregrym of Smallville and Heroes fame is in it!

It's also time to say goodbye (sort of) to an old friend - Veronica Mars is cancelled, and therefore, her forum has moved to the Morgue. But don't miss Kristen Bell on Heroes this Fall!

There may be some more additions to the forum soon, so stay tuned! In addition to those new entries, and of course Smallville, but there's also space to talk about many other TV shows! Below are a few of them:

Current Shows
Heroes - Grey's Anatomy - Jericho - Prison Break - Supernatural - General TV Forum

Past Shows
Lois & Clark - Aquaman - Birds of Prey - Buffy/Angel/Firefly - Veronica Mars

New Gough Interview Talks About The Finale & Future Seasons
iFMagazine.com has conducted an all-new interview with Smallville Executive Producer Alfred Gough. In the interview, he revealed some interesting tidbits, including talk of a Season 8.

"We'll officially find out about season 7 on May 17th [during the CW upfronts], but obviously we feel very confident we'll be back. As for season 8, who knows? There are a lot of factors that will play into that decision, not the least of which is the quality of season 7, so that is what we are focusing on at the moment. If there is an 8th season, that would be the show's last. Every hero may have a beginning, but every story has an end," Gough said.

Al Gough promises "new characters, new relationships, and more mythology" for Season 7 and reveals that an announcement will be made in the late summer regarding more DC Comics characters coming to the show.

Gough also talks about Thursday night's season finale, the decision to make Chloe a meteor freak, possible return appearances by Oliver and the Justice League, and more.

Smallville News From France!
Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and "Lex Luthor" Michael Rosenbaum are currently in Paris, France at the 2007 Jules Verne Fesitval. The show is being honored and spotlighted yet again this year.

At the Festival, the show creators have been interviewed and some interesting revelations have come out. Among them:

  • Tom Welling is signed with the show through an 8th season. It sounds like the producers want the show to ultimately go for eight years, and end it there.
  • Michael Rosenbaum's contract ends with Season 7, so if there is an eighth year, it will be Clark vs. other villains. However, Michael COULD guest star.
  • Aaron Ashmore will be back as Jimmy in Season 7. It sounds like he could have a 13-episode contract, though we don't think it was confirmed.
  • Justin Hartley (Green Arrow) won't be back next year as he is attached to another project.

As always, you can read more Smallville spoilers at the KryptonSite Spoilers Page.

"Promise" Overnight Ratings
Ratings Sources: Mediaweek & Variety

Smallville's return episode did decently in the ratings, though it still lost to fifth graders.

Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? gave FOX their best Thursday night in almost ten years, so ratings on the other networks were down across the board.

Variety noted that Smallville did particularly well in its demographic "CW was above average with original episodes of "Smallville" (2.0/6 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) and "Supernatural" (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall)," they said. Smallville's Moxness Recognized With Cinematography Award
Smallville cinematographer David Moxness won the episodic TV award at the 21st Annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement Awards. The Awards were help on February 18 in Los Angeles. The award specifically recognized his work on the episode "Arrow."

"I have always been proud of the level of production that we achieve week in and week out," Smallville co-executive producer James Marshall said in a press release. "We have two of the best cameramen in the business. The ASC award is a major award, and when Glen Winter was nominated in 2006, I was thrilled that his peers in the U.S. had acknowledged what we here at Smallville have known for years; he is a bright talent with a big future. When David was nominated this year it was back to back nominations, and when he won we were ecstatic; this honor is something that only a few Canadians have managed to accomplish. All of us here at Smallville are very proud of him. Congratulations David.”

Congratulations come from us here at KryptonSite too! Way to go!

Special Announcement: Season 4 Companion Book Is Coming!
Ever since the official Titan companion books spotlighting Smallville's first three seasons had come out, people have been wondering when new entries would be on their way.

Wonder no more! Amazon.com is listing Smallville: The Official Companion Season 4 for a September release. The book will contain exclusive interviews with the show's writers, producers, cast and crew; character profiles; excerpts from the Smallville Ledger and Torch websites; and much more.

The announcement of this book might also explain why updates to KryptonSite have been a little sporadic in the past few weeks: It is because the book is written by KryptonSite's webmaster Craig Byrne. Now that the book deadline is nearing its end, things will soon return to normal here on the site.

Either way, the book will hopefully be something you all will enjoy, so you'll all support it by pre-ordering copies from Amazon... right?

Regarding A Justice League Movie...
We have received several e-mails with the "news tip" that the Warner Bros. movie people are looking into producing a movie based on the Justice League.

While we thank people for the tips, we'd like to remind people that, just like when Superman Returns is in development, the primary focus of KryptonSite and related sites is on television. Frankly (speaking as myself, webmaster Craig for a moment), I would have much rather seen a TV spin-off of Smallville's Justice League characters right now, but the Warner movie division clearly takes priority as usual, which could explain why we never got a JL spin-off at all, and that's just lame.

So, don't expect to see Justice League movie news here. You might not expect to see a Justice League movie considering Warner Bros.' high success rate at getting their DC Comics-based films made (hello, Wonder Woman and The Flash).

Smallville's Justice League episode scored very well for the CW with 5.2 million viewers. It placed #2 in the "adult demo race," behind NBC's comedies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The episode achieved a fair share of press and fan attention, and hopefully the increased ratings will justify a return of these characters on the show - or, even better yet, their own series. No details about either a return episode or a spin-off are confirmed at this time.

Trade magazine/newspaper Variety has positive things to say about the Jan. 18 "Justice League" episode of Smallville.

They call it a "welcome respite" from the "Smallville Place" love triangles, and they credit Smallville for its continued performance as "a true unsung hero" on The CW network.

Here's a sampling:

"Despite the limitations of a TV budget, "Smallville" has always done a creditable job of bringing convincing production value to its hero- and villain-filled world -- a standard put to the test by the presence of four sidekicks along with the show's usual strange visitor from another planet."

TV Guide Talks About "Justice"
The January 15 issue of TV Guide magazine features a two-page spread talking all about the highly-anticipated "Justice" episode of Smallville, which airs on January 18.

The spread includes a big photo that looks a lot like the screen capture we have with this article, so if you want to see the picture all nice and big, there's your chance.

Interviews are inside with episode writer/director Steve DeKnight, Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough, and Kyle Gallner (Bart Allen). There are not a whole lot of new revelations, though both DeKnight and a crew member noted that the episode gave Tom Welling's Clark a rare opportunity to work with male co-stars.

"He may have a scene with one guy every now and then, but he's not surrounded by male friends on the show. So it was really nice, not just for the character, but for Tom, to have that dynamic," DeKnight said.

Also a new tidbit from Alfred Gough regarding the Green Arrow - spoiler-haters avert your eyes - GreenArrowville might not yet be over. "He may pop up in the last couple of episodes," Gough teases.

New BuddyTV Interview With Al Gough
The BuddyTV website has spoken to Smallville co-creator and executive producer Alfred Gough in a brand new interview.

They talk to Al about doing the show as it is in its sixth year, whether or not there will be a Season 7, and more.

Here are some highlights:

Seeing that fans have really responded well to the Green Arrow, are there any plans to expand on this or spin him off?

There are no plans to spin him off. We may bring him back...we sort of have an arc, and he may pop up again, but that's going to be determined upon whether or not Justin gets a pilot, and my guess is he will. So, he's definitely a character that we can certainly revisit, and if not later this season, perhaps next season.

You're hinting that Lionel and Martha will become a couple, is this something that will truly materialize?

Ultimately, no, because I think that Martha is too good and pure and sees Lionel for what he really is, and the question really being - when is Lionel going to really show his stripes again, which we'll see in the latter half of the season.

MV: Would you be up for a Green Arrow spin-off?

JH: People are always asking me that, and my answer is always, "I'm doing Smallville right now and I can't really focus until I'm done with it." But now that Smallville is done it's like, yeah, I guess it's time to start thinking about [a spin-off]. Obviously it's not up to me. If someone calls we'll have to start talking.
