DVD Review: Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo

The recent Teen Titans animated movie, Trouble In Tokyo, made its debut on the Cartoon Network late last year. In February, Warner Home Video finally released it to DVD.

Some of the character design in this movie is great. I love the look and character of Saico-Tek, though yes, I had to consult Wikipedia to see exactly how to spell that.

The action is very kinetic and exactly what one would expect from a Titans feature. David Slack wrote this story, and it's obvious that he is a fan of the characters. (Now if only they had gone forward with Global Frequency so he could write adult TV...)

The trip to Japan offers a change of pace for the team, and besides finally seeing some advancement in a Robin/Starfire romance, there's a humorous recurring theme of Beast Boy wanting a vacation. Japanese culture figures prominently into this movie, which makes it an adventure as well as an educational experience. It's rare to see Japan presented in this way, especially in a program for young people, so I liked that.

Another sequence I loved landed Beast Boy in a karaoke club, where he ends up doing his own version of the addictive Teen Titans theme song. His lyrics are a little... off, but it's funny to see him try. Stay tuned to the closing credits to hear lyrics from all of the characters.

Each character seems to split up into their own adventure in Japan, giving each one a chance to shine. Characters based on popular Japanese characters such as Godzilla and Astro Boy appear throughout.

Extras include a "Lost Episode" where the team faces a Billy Idol-inspired music foe, as well as a "Robin Underground Racing" game that I couldn't get to work for the life of me.

Complaints? There are no chapter stops that I know of, unless there's something I'm just not doing correctly with this DVD. And admittedly, as much as I love the world of the Titans and think it's an exciting show, someone much younger than myself would enjoy it a lot more. I'd even go so far as to say for a kid you can't get much better than this. This may be the end of the Titans' animated adventures, at least in this incarnation. I anxiously await the Judas Contract movie, but I'm glad that there's something good for all ages out there right now.

I would also like to know why this DVD was made and prepared for a fullscreen format when so many people have widescreen TV's these days. I think it really would have looked incredible that way. All in all, I give this DVD a B-. It's a good movie but especially the lack of widescreen presentation really disappointed me.
