Interview with Kristin Kreuk & Allison Mack
By Craig Byrne - Posted December 13, 2007

Kristin Kreuk & Allison Mack Want You!
Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack, along with their friends Nicki Clyne from Battlestar Galactica and Sarah Edmondson of Edgemont, will soon be launching their own website aimed at college students. In creating this website, they want to hear about some of the things that YOU, the fans, would like to see. To take the survey, check out the link below. In the survey you can even send an individual question yourself to Kristin or Allison!

To let the fans know a bit more about what they will be doing, Kristin and Allison have done an interview with KryptonSite's Craig Byrne where they've explained their goals. They also talk a little bit about what's coming up on Smallville, so be beware of spoilers near the end of the article!

Here's what they had to say...

"We're starting a company with Nicki Clyne who's on Battlestar Galactica and our friend Sarah Edmondson [from Edgemont] and what we want to do is provide a bunch of services for college students as well as an environment where they can really explore themselves and what they want to see in the world and what they do and really communicate with each other," Kristin Kreuk explains about the new venture. "But first, we just want to get as much data as possible. That's what the survey's about."

"We want to get as much information as we can about college students, seeing as Allison and I did not go to college and we don't quite have an experience of what that's like," she continues.

The purpose of the survey is "so that we can properly design it, and to be the most effective and most fun and exciting for college students as possible," Allison Mack adds. "[The site will be] basically a place for college students to gather, to really express themselves and understand themselves and exchange ideas and interact with each other and have fun. Imagine the best campus common that you can, but it's sort of like a national campus common; a place where everybody can gather and there will be like all sorts of cool stuff happening. It's like a membership-only kind of a thing' sort of like a cross-country fraternity/sorority kind of place."

Of course, this survey also affords fans the opportunity to interact with some of their favorite actresses, in the form of submitted questions whose answers will be posted on the finished web site. "They'll be able to submit a question that they would want to ask one of us - me, Kristin, Nicki Clyne from Battlestar Galactica, or Sarah Edmondson of Edgemont, and then we'll go through and select a certain amount of questions that we're gonna answer, and then go ahead and post the answers to those questions," Allison says.

Kristin sees this new project as a way to interact with and hopefully assist her peers. "Allison and I are both in our 20s, so for me, this time in my life has been a time of huge growth and exploration, and I think that even though I didn't go to college, that's what lots of people in their 20s are going through, so I think that for me, I see a large group of people that have such great potential and whom I can connect with, because I am of the same age group, and I would really like to be able to help them on their journey, in whatever way I can. This seems like a really great opportunity to do that using the influence that I have, to build something or be a part of building something that will help them truly grow and have fun and be happy and enjoy their lives and make the most out of their lives," she says.

Allison agrees. "I think that this has been a place of great growth but also with a lot of really scary kind of tumultuous things happening, because I feel like in your 20s, especially in your early 20s, like when you're in college is when you're really defining who you are and how you want to be in the world. You're making these huge life decisions, like 'What am I going to spend the rest of my life doing?' and 'How do I want to do that?' and I think that that's really scary and I think to find a place where you feel safe enough to explore all those things and have a community of people that are all dealing with the same stuff and exchange ideas and support each other and figure out ways to best express yourself in the world, is something that I think is really needed. And so, I think that just utilizing the influence that we have from Smallville and then also utilizing the internet and the resources that we have online as far as our fans are concerned, utilizing those two things is a way to create a place where people can do all of those explorations and feel like they're a part of a community. It's a really important thing for me," she says.

"Sometimes [the Web] seems to be a little impersonal in some respects because you're not physically near a person, so we want to find a way to utilize the web to be more humane with each other and to really see each other as like human beings and have more humanity which I think is something that we're really exploring how to do that," Kristin adds.

"The fans are our team mates in getting this thing moving and really gathering all the information we need to make this the coolest thing we possibly can make it," Allison says. "They're our greatest support system and they're the best place to really gather what we feel like we really need and want to move this forward. So the fans are incredibly valuable to us, and their support is just amazing."

And now... some Smallville! (Be warned of spoilers)

Just like both actresses had said, the twenties are a time of growth in many peoples' lives, and the lives of their TV alter-egos, Lana Lang and Chloe Sullivan, have also changed quite a bit since we first "met" them.

"I think that Lana's gone through a really rough go," Kristin says of her character's metamorphosis. "She's come from being this very kind, sweet, sincere, honest individual and basically, she's gone through a lot of crap and been in relationships that have been very violent in a lot of ways - or, not only violent, but people who have died or been infected or, I don't know, all the random things that have happened!"

"So I think after this thing with the Luthors, she truly did love Lex in many many ways and really wanted the best for him, and kind of put herself on the line with her friends, saying that this is a person that she really thinks change and wanted to be part of that. When she discovered, really, how destructive and violent he actually was and how he was treating her she got really angry," Kristin continues. "Her intent was really to kill him. She had planned on killing him and failed to do so, and I think she really does feel in some way that to kill him would be better for the world. Yet, on the other hand, she still loves him in some capacity as well. But she's coming back to Clark, the boy who she adores, and is still good and pure and lovely, and she's not like that anymore. She's trying to be, because there's a part of her that's still like that. She's juggling these two sides of her character and struggling to kind of bring those two things together. It's been difficult for her this season, I think, because she wants to be honest, but she also thinks there's a greater good."

Kristin also addresses the role reversal now that Lana is the one keeping secrets from Clark. "I think she feels a lot more like she's a part of his life. They still have their issues; those two struggle a lot, especially now that she's doing a similar thing to what he was doing before and keeping a lot of things to herself. All of that kind of blows up at some point, as you guys will see. But I think that she's feeling just closer to him and she feels like he trusts her with that, which is really important for her. And now she has the opportunity to uphold him and support him in his journey to being a hero, whereas before she had no clue what was going on," she says.

Another character who is finding her new place in life is Allison Mack's Chloe, particularly in the realm of her new meteor ability. "Chloe's figuring her powers out, so it's kind of fun because it's very similar to where Clark was in the beginning of the show, in that all of these new things are happening in her body that she's kind of unaware of how to handle or utilize," Allison says. "She's really kind of exploring that and trying to figure out the best way to do that and the best way to get a handle on that. I think that you're definitely going to see her messing with that and exploring herself and her newfound powers and trying to decide the best way to utilize them, and [she's] really kind of taking a lot of risks. It's been really fun for me this season because I've really had the opportunity to explore what does it mean to be a girl and how do you do that and how do you uphold other people and still not destroy yourself."

Returning to Chloe's life in an episode titled "Hero" will be Sam Jones III as Pete Ross - another character who has gone on a journey of growth. "Sam has been back for the last couple weeks, we've been shooting the episode that he's in, and he is just amazing," Allison gushes. "He's doing really cool things in his life, doing a lot of writing, developing a lot of businesses outside of Smallville, and he's just grown up a lot. There's this incredible sense of familiarity with him, because we worked so close for the first couple of seasons of the show. I feel like he's my brother, and yet we both have grown up so much, so it's cool just like getting to know somebody that you already know really well," Allison says.

"I didn't get to work with Sam that much, but I feel like I was around him a lot," Kristin adds. "Back in the day, the old team, it's kind of cool for all of us to be together again. I've always adored Sam, and I think that, like Allison was saying, and we were talking about before, I feel like this part of our lives has been a huge growing, learning experience and to see somebody at the beginning of that and then at another step in that, like years afterwards, is so interesting. I imagine what it would be like to see me and Allison at that point, and then to meet us again now. It's really great to see him and it feels cool to have the team back together."

Both actresses had very short answers when asked what they'd like to see in their characters' futures. "I'd like to see my character utilizing her power more consistently," Allison shares. And Allison's good friend and now business partner Kristin? "I'd love to have Lana find some consistent theme in herself, and find some sort of peace," Kristin reveals. "Because she's struggling so much."

Thanks to both Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack for taking the time in their busy schedules to do this interview. Please check out the survey and be sure to tell them KryptonSite sent you!
