The Superman project from Michael B. Jordan for HBO Max is picking up steam as Deadline is reporting that Darnell Metayer & Josh Peters are set to write the project, now known as Val-Zod, for HBO Max. Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society is producing the project for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television; it is said to be presenting as a “limited series.”

Here’s how Deadline describes the project:

Val-Zod is the story of another Kryptonian with powers who hails from the same doomed planet as Superman. The hero is Black, and he finds refuge on Earth 2. Like the original Man of Steel, he is sheltered on his adopted planet but eventually in the comics is pitted against a brainwashed Superman.

Michael B. Jordan Developing Black Superman Project for HBO Max?

Normally we do not cover rumors here at KryptonSite unless they come from a legitimate source; Collider, who originally reported this, is reliable even though the news isn’t officially confirmed: They report that Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) is developing and possibly will even star in a HBO Max limited series about the Black Superman from Earth-2, a.k.a. Val-Zod.

The development of this project is concurrent with a Black Superman project produced by J.J. Abrams which is unrelated and has gotten a bit of blowback for racebending Clark Kent rather than using the “Calvin Ellis” character that already exists and becomes President of the United States. Val-Zod is also a separate character, hailing from comic books’ Earth-2 in the “New 52″ era.

Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society production company is said to be working with him on this project. “It’s important for people to see themselves in roles that they normally wouldn’t see. What that does to the next generation, to a kid or somebody that didn’t think that is something that they could achieve — now they’re thinking about it and daydreaming about it,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year about representation on movie screens. However, at the time he said he would just be a viewer for J.J. Abrams’ take. For some context on what Jordan’s feelings might be, Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds has some thoughts.

You can read the original Collider article that broke this news here, and we’ll all be staying tuned to see if this project pans out. There could be several Superman projects on the horizon if all goes well!
