Gough & Millar Were Interested in a Wonder Woman Show, Aquaman Crossovers

Screenrant today posted an extensive interview with Smallville creators Alfred Gough & Miles Millar where they confirm for the first time that a Diana Prince series was something that was at one point thought about.

In addition to revealing that a crossover with Aquaman would have surely been considered if it had gone to series for more than just the pilot that was shot – even though Justin Hartley played the role in the pilot and Alan Ritchson had played him in the Smallville universe, of course – they talked about the value that crossovers with other characters could have had if it had existed in a time where superhero shows spun out the way the Arrowverse did a decade later.

“Characters could have crossed in and out of the shows, but I also think it’s important, with all of these shows, is [that] they need to be their own thing. They need to stand on their own two feet as shows,” Al Gough explained, seemingly understanding something the current MCU might not. “And then you don’t want to build them with the idea like, ‘Oh, now we’re going to use the crutch of all these other people from the other shows crossing in and out.’ So I think you can do that, but they have to be their own thing. And again, had we had the opportunity, we would’ve built out [Aquaman], and then we would’ve definitely looked at a Diana Prince show because that’s something else that we were very interested [in.],” he continued.

“Yeah, that was the other show, the young Wonder Woman show,” Miles Millar added. We thought that was a really interesting character, really interesting dynamics. It felt like a natural fit for crossovers with Clark and Lois. But it was just, unfortunately, the regime at the time. Once the WB became CW, it was just a different [time.]”

Unfortunately, The CW wasn’t as supportive of an environment for the Smallville creators, with new network head Dawn Ostroff seemingly more interested in shows like Gossip Girl than proven hits like Smallville and Supernatural. (Boy was she wrong!) So, once they moved to The CW, the creators didn’t have the same amount of time to think about spinoffs, because they were fighting for Smallville’s survival against “people who didn’t want the show to succeed.”

“It was good for us creatively because we just had to fight for it and make sure that we could be as ambitious and take risks with the show, so I think the show was better for it because we were focused on it,” Miles said. “We weren’t focused on other things. Sometimes shows, if you take the foot off the gas midway through, you only get six seasons or whatever it is. I think it was good for us, but it was unfortunate that we couldn’t expand what we wanted to do in terms of the universe of Smallville.”

Would you have watched a Wonder Woman spinoff from Smallville, or would you have been first in line to watch Aquaman? Let your thoughts be heard below! You can read the full Screenrant interview here.
