Welcome to KryptonSite.
Chances are good you’ve been to this website before, though if you’re one of those people who have discovered Smallville through Netflix or streaming, maybe you haven’t. KryptonSite launched in early 2001 at a time when news about your favorite TV show wasn’t on a billion different websites, where social media didn’t exist and forums were where you’d talk about your favorite episodes, and where – just like now – fans would break into camps over which romantic relationship they wanted the lead character to be in.
Twenty-five years ago at the time of this writing, the very first episode of Smallville hit the air. Clark Kent said to ask him again “in about five years” about all he learned in that first episode… we wonder what that Clark would think now, 25 years later. For ten of those years, we’d all watch with anticipation on multiple different nights of the week to see the latest adventures of Clark, Lex, Lana, Lois & company. When the show wasn’t in new episodes, we’d visit the forums and debate such important questions as “who will die in the season finale?” And “is this character the real Lois Lane?” (Spoiler: It was Erica Durance all along.) On show nights, we’d follow along and react live to the episode that was currently on. (Yes, people watched shows live back then.) 22 episodes a year, this was the routine. Honestly? It was glorious. Even when people would bend reality to explain an “EXIT” sign over someone’s head.
Things have changed. Thanks to apps such as Instagram, we can see what our favorite actors are currently up to or reflecting on. There are podcasts, including one hosted by Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum! And of course there are conventions. Have you gotten your ticket for Creation’s 25th Anniversary Salute to Smallville yet? Come, we’d like to meet you!
Personally speaking, Smallville opened the door to many opportunities I would not have even been able to dream of. Sharing the stage with this cast… writing five official tie-in books about the show… and all of the press adventures I was able to have in the years to follow, it was all a privilege and I am always appreciative and always grateful to show creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who even in 2001 saw the value of a fan hub for a TV series about a young Superman. I’m also thankful for the many friendships that have formed as a result of covering Smallville, from 25 years ago all the way until today. I mean, heck, there were even some marriages that happened from people who met on the site!
Thanks also go to the cast of Smallville, many of whom I’ve gotten to know better these last few years. It’s surreal to be on stage with these people, and everyone has been so kind and welcoming all these decades later. It’s much appreciated, and all of your hard work over those years was noticed. Whether you worked 15-hour days for ten years or happened to live in my building here in Burbank, you were all an important part of what made it all tick. (Such a great crew, too!)
We will always hold on to Smallville, and today felt like a perfect time to launch a new look and a new design. This will require some help and a team — so if you’ve always wanted to be a part of KSite, please shoot me an e-mail. Unfortunately, there is no money in it at this time because the ads don’t even pay for the hosting fee (on the bright side, I think you’ll notice this newer version of the site has a significantly smaller amount of ads… and if you’re still having issues with ads covering any content or anything, PLEASE let us know… screen grabs help too!)
I wanted to have more features set up on the new site by the anniversary date, but “real life” and a “real job” sometimes gets in the way of that… even if there’s some crossover with that “real job” in every day life. There are still some articles to finish, a mobile banner to set up, and some recent news posts that I need to port over from the times that I was working on this version of the site in the background. Still, look for more regular updates around here as things get going, including some of the things I wanted to have up at launch. Someday, I’d like to have a searchable news archive as well as some regular columns that would celebrate Smallville in a way only true fans would know how. Maybe links/recaps to the current podcasts that we like, including TalkVille, House of El, and Always Hold On To Smallville. If a team builds, we’ll make it happen. The hope is also to get the forums running better so we can re-create those old times.
Thank you for visiting (again). KRYPTONSITE STILL EXISTS!
