Aquaman Pilot: #1 TV Show Video On iTunes!!!
Customers of iTunes are heavily downloading the pilot episode to the Aquaman TV series by Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

Aquaman crept up the charts of the most downloaded TV show videos on iTunes, and at last glance, hit the #1 spot. Not bad for a pilot that the CW decided not to go forward with as a series! Fan reaction at places like the KryptonSite/AquamanTV Forum has been favorable, and word of mouth should keep A.C. at the #1 spot for a few more days.

E! Online has posted an article about the pilot's success and how it is yet another example of online sampling creating a hit. Click here to read that article, titled "Aquaman Going Swimmingly On iTunes."

The pilot stars future Smallville guest Justin Hartley.

Seattle Times Article Compares The Supermen
Julia Waterhous of the Seattle Times has written an article for the paper where she compares the recent Superman Returns to Smallville, with a preference going to the TV version of the Man of Steel.

Here's a sampling:

If the grown-up Clark Kent's lover is Lois Lane, what on earth will happen to Lana? And the Lois of "Smallville" is so hard-headed and stubborn that Clark finds her downright obnoxious — so how and when, exactly, do they turn into lovers? Plus, although Clark and Lex Luthor aren't exactly getting along, they don't hate each other. What's going to happen that's so drastic it would turn them into arch-enemies?

Smallville-Related Happenings At The Comic-Con International in San Diego!
Although there is no Smallville panel scheduled for the Comic-Con International in San Diego, which begins today and runs through July 23, there are a few items of interest that fans of the show may enjoy:

  • Paul Wesley (formerly "Wasilewski") played Lucas Luthor in the Season Two Smallville episode "Prodigal." Now he's in a new ABC Family movie called Fallen. Not only is Fallen being heavily promoted at Comic-Con, but there's also a Fallen panel and autograph signing featuring Paul scheduled for Saturday. (Booth 3817)
  • Former Smallville supervising producer Jeph Loeb and former Smallville/Aquaman director Greg Beeman are both involved in a new NBC program called Heroes, where seemingly unconnected people across the world begin having super abilities of their own. There's a Heroes booth where they will be giving out collectible buttons and an exclusive Tim Sale comic book, and then on Friday afternoon at 12:30, there will be an exclusive screening of a 72-minute cut of the Heroes pilot! Plus: What is 9thWonders? (Booth 3912; screening in Room 6CDEF)
  • Jeph Loeb is also on a panel on Saturday presented by TV Guide, where he, along with such TV luminaries as David Goyer, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Bryan Fuller, and Frank Spotnitz discuss current sci-fi/fantasy television series. (3:30 Saturday in Room 20)
  • A "Superman Through The Ages" DVD panel hosted by Warner Home Video has some guests from the classic movies, and promises guests from various Superman TV series, but we haven't heard any kind of confirmation as to if anyone from Smallville will be attending. (1:00 Friday in Room 20)
  • The DK Publishing booth has a preview copy of Smallville: The Visual Guide, written by KryptonSite's own Craig Byrne! Take a look at it at Booth 5449 - and tell them you heard about it at KryptonSite! There's also a DK panel on Thursday at 2PM in Room 1B; in case you want to ask them about the Guide and show your support!

Look! Up In The Sky! Superman Documentary Airs Tonight
The A&E cable network in the United States will be premiering their documentary, Look! Up In The Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman tonight.

The documentary takes a look at the history of the Superman character in the media, from the classic Fleischer cartoons and movie serials all the way through to this summer's Superman Returns.

Smallville is included in several minutes of the documentary, mostly using clips from the series pilot. (Though clips from "Arrival," "Tempest," "Rosetta," and "X-Ray" are incorporated). Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent) and series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are interviewed, as is two-time Smallville guest Margot Kidder. Sadly, KryptonSite's favorite Superman, Tom Welling, is not present; though his immediate predecessor, Dean Cain of Lois & Clark fame, is.

The piece has already been reviewed favorably online in some places.

The special airs at 8PM (ET) June 12 on A&E. Click here to see a trailer.

Note: A special version of this documentary that clocks in a half hour longer will be released on DVD next week. Click here to order your copy! Chances are that the longer version will have even more Smallville goodness - and at under 10 bucks, how can you go wrong?

Some Hope That We'll Someday See Aquaman?
WizardUniverse.com has posted an interview with executive producer Alfred Gough where he talks about the Aquaman pilot and promises that it will be seen by the masses at some point.

Aquaman, from the creators of Smallville, was hoped to reinvent the character for a new audience, much like Smallville did with Superman. Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were behind the series pilot, which was directed by Greg Beeman.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:

"We’re working on a way to get the pilot out there. That’s sort of all I can say at the moment. Whether it’s some sort of addition on season six of “Smallville” or not—we’re really proud of the pilot. We’d love for the fans to get a chance to see it. The implication when a network doesn’t pick up a show is that the pilot sucks and that’s not the case. It’s not a perfect pilot by any stretch of the imagination. There are other reasons—which are a mystery to us—as to why The CW didn’t pick it up. I think it definitely puts Aquaman in a modern context and he’s not lame. It’s a shame because it would have been a really fun series."

Reminder: Smallville Effects Wizards At VES Festival
Artists, supervisors and producers from EntityFX (the company that handles the special effects for Smallville) will be participating in a 75 minute discussion and slide show at the Visual Effects Society's 2006 Festival of Visual Effects.

The discussion will also include a question and answer session. The event, which will be held in Hollywood, is open to the public though of course, there is a cost for tickets. The Smallville event is described as follows:

Creating Super Effects on a TV Budget: It’s a Big Job at “Smallville” / 3:00 - 4:30 pm
With over 100 episodes aired over 5 seasons, the Warner Bros. television series “Smallville” has achieved a remarkably mature status for an episodic drama based on the teenage adventures of Clark Kent, before he assumes the alter ego of Superman. During the past four seasons, Entity FX created the visual effects that in a large part drive the show. Join the producers of “Smallville” and the staff of Entity as they explain and demonstrate what makes visual effects production of a weekly network series a unique challenge The panel will focus on how the Entity team spurred a creative evolution by developing a strategy to achieve economic production and how that strategy helped to overcome the artistic, budgetary and time limitations common to television production. Panelists: Mat Beck, Kymber Lim, Eli Jarra, Noriaki "Jack" Matsumoto, Ken Horton, John Wash – all from Entity FX

Immediately following the Entity/Smallville panel is a discussion with Superman Returns visual effects supervisor Mark Stetson and his team, making July 8 the real day to attend.

You can learn more about the VES event by clicking here.

Rosenbaum, Ashmore At Superman Returns Premiere
Smallville's Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum, as well as "Leech" guest star Shawn Ashmore (Eric Summers) were both present for the premiere of the new film, Superman Returns, in Westwood (Los Angeles), California, on June 21.

Rosenbaum even posed for some photos with his older Lex Luthor counterpart, Kevin Spacey. Thankfully, nothing along the lines of the Blinovitch Limitation Effect occurred to create a time anomaly.

Lois & Clark's Superman, Dean Cain, was also present. He was seen in some photos with Eva Longoria, no doubt sharing Teri Hatcher horror stories.

In Comic Book Stores Today: Superman/Batman #26 Tells "Sam's Story"
Sam Loeb, the 17-year-old son of former Smallville Supervising Producer Jeph Loeb, was a frequently seen face to the crew of Smallville and to the many fans and friends who had met his father at conventions and public appearances. Sam left us way too soon, at the age of 17 in June 2005.

The Season Five premiere of Smallville, "Arrival," was dedicated to Sam's memory.

Issue #26 features a story special story Sam wrote for DC's Superman/Batman comic book before his passing. It's going to be an award winner, but be warned, you WILL get an emotional reaction. The issue hits comic book stores today, June 1. We highly recommend that you go to the comic book store to pick up this special issue.

The Newsarama website has posted an interview Jeph Loeb where he talks about his son and this story that 26 of the industry's top creators will be completing as their own tribute to Sam. Check out this roster:

Arthur Adams (Longshot, Jonni Future)
Joe Casey (G.I. Joe, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Superman)
John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men, Planetary)
Joyce Chin (Superman: Silver Banshee, Xena)
Ian Churchill (Cable, Supergirl)
Allan Heinberg (JLA, Young Avengers)
Geoff Johns (Infinite Crisis, The Flash)
Joe Kelly (Superman, Deadpool)
Mike Kunkel (Herobear and the Kid)

Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, now writing Astonishing X-Men)

If you are interested in getting this comic, we do recommend that you call your local comics retailer (to find, dial 1-800-COMIC-BOOK) and tell them that you'd like a copy reserved, so they are aware of the demand. All of the creators listed will be donating their fees and royalties to the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund to be given every year to a graduating senior at Sam's high school.

Read Jeph Loeb's complete Newsarama interview about Superman/Batman #26 here.

The link above also features a preview of a 6-page story from Superman/Batman #26 written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by his For All Seasons collaborator Tim Sale. Not only is it done in the Superman For All Seasons style, but in a way, you could almost see it in the Smallville universe. Be warned, however: The story is beautifully written and drawn, but it is not for people who cry easily at sad things.

Smallville Among Entertainment Weekly's WB Highlights
The June 2, 2006 issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine takes a look at some of the highlights of the 11-year history of the soon-to-depart WB Network.

It's a nostalgic look at some of The WB's best and most memorable moments, good and bad (from Buffy all the way through to Felicity's haircut). They remember who Mary Cherry is, so it's definitely well-informed.

#11 on their list was "Smallville Institutes A No-Fly Zone." Here's what they had to say:

"When you
