Supergirl: Ten Thoughts About “The Last Children Of Krypton” (Advance Review)

Craig Byrne previews the Supergirl episode “The Last Children of Krypton” with ten not-too-spoilery review thoughts.

A new episode of Supergirl airs tonight at 8PM ET/PT on The CW, and rather than a hugely in-depth review, I’m just going to share some thoughts on what we can look forward to. I’m going to try to keep spoilers out, for the most part, but if you want some initial thoughts about “The Last Children of Krypton” a few hours early, here you go. I’m not even including Metallo in these ten points, since I’m not sure what I thought of the character… but most of the rest is here!

SPG202B_0146b– Kara/Alex: With apologies to my queen Cat Grant, Kara and Alex is the single most important relationship in Supergirl, and even with Kara’s Kryptonian cousin around, these two get their screen time. Chyler Leigh gets to really show what kind of feelings that Alex has had with growing up with a Super sister, and Kara might have an announcement for Alex that she won’t like. It’s so very well done, and is a great example of the heart within this series.

– From Cat Grant to Lou Grant: Snapper Carr sees that Kara has spunk, and he hates spunk. Ian Gomez plays the newspaper editor as… well, an a–hole, for lack of a better word, and he’s not as easy to crack as Cat has been. As someone said after the screening last week, it’s doubtful that even Barry Allen can make this guy smile. I think he’ll be a fun addition to the show.

– SUPERMAN. I cannot stress enough how perfect Tyler Hoechlin has been in this role. One of the things I love the most, though, is his respect for others. He’s not out to take Supergirl’s thunder or hog the glory. He wants to help her. (See what Tyler Hoechlin himself had to say about this here). I desperately want to see more of this Superman, who did more for me in 30 seconds than the movies had in 10 hours… well, Batman v Superman felt like 8 hours, at least, but you get my general idea. Spinoff? More appearances on this show? Whatever it is, I hope the Supergirl producers lock him down. Oh, and of course, three’s more between him and J’Onn in this episode, which is also a great thing, since David Harewood is another of the show’s best assets.

– Hero Worship. Winn’s adoration of Superman continues to be adorable.

– Mon-El. We may get to learn more about Mon-El as well as Chris Wood’s chest in this episode.

– There’s a mole in the DEO. Quick, see which of the “extras” you recognized in the season premiere. It’s probably that guy. Or lady.

SUPERGIRL-CRISIS-COVER– Brenda Strong. Brenda Strong is another one of those actresses whose work I’ve always enjoyed. I liked her brief role as the Ice Queen on The 100 last year, and Ann Ewing is in my top two list of favorite Bobby Ewing wives on Dallas. (Sorry Pam, you’re #3). On Supergirl, she plays this mysterious person at Cadmus, and within she drops a bomb about Jeremiah Danvers that I’m calling it now as “Cyborg Superman.”

– Stronger Together. With Alex, or with Superman, Kara works so well with others. Again, smiles abound.

– Glen Winter. I failed to mention one of Supergirl’s best directors in my review of the premiere, and I’d like to rectify that. Having had years of experience also helming episodes of Smallville, The Flash, and Arrow, Glen Winter *gets it.* There are some beautiful shots in this episode, including the already-spoiled Crisis on Infinite Earths homage, but I’ve got to say, Glen is at the top of the game, and Supergirl is lucky to have him.

And finally…

– Cat. Cat has nurtured Kara in the series’ first 22 episodes, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the show once that situation changes. But I will say the Kara/Cat scenes in this episode are very well done, and Calista Flockhart is yet another of those castings that was just so right.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Release Date Announced

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film is currently scheduled for a 2026 release.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film has had a release date announced — and it’s less than a year after James Gunn’s Superman.

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that the new film for the Maid of Might — based on the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely — is on the schedule for June 26, 2026. Of course, plans can and often do change, but that’s where it’s set for now. The film is said to “depart from the earnest take on the character” that was seen on The CW’s Supergirl TV series.

Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, and it is expected that we will see her before this movie — in Superman, perhaps? Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is the director.

New Supergirl Featurette Includes Laura Vandervoort, Melissa Benoist & More

Supergirl actresses Laura Vandervoort, Melissa Benoist, Sasha Calle, and Helen Slater are included in a retrospective featurette on The Flash Blu-ray.

One of the rare good elements from the recent Flash movie was the inclusion of Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and now, we can revisit her and a few old Supergirl favorites, as Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Melissa Benoist (Supergirl TV series from The CW & CBS), and Helen Slater (movies’ original Supergirl) are all included on a featurette on The Flash movie home release. These are all new interviews with the actresses, and in some cases, these are their first interviews about the character in years. The title of the featurette is “Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton.”

Although a Twitter/X report from “Sennaverse” on Twitter notes that the documentary can be found on the MAX streaming service, we have had no luck finding it there so far. The featurette is included, however, with purchase of The Flash movie on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. The set is due for release on Tuesday, August 29. You can purchase that here and support KryptonSite if you wish!

We’re looking forward to seeing these new interviews and spotlight on the Woman of Tomorrow!

New Superman & Supergirl Movies Announced

James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced new Supergirl and Superman movie projects.

Published

New DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced two new movies that will make Super-fans take notice. One is a new Superman film titled Superman: Legacy and it will be out in 2025; the other is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series.

Scheduled for July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy will be written by James Gunn and the hope is that he will also direct it. “t’s not an origin story. It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned,” Peter Safran said during the announcement.

“With our stories, we want to take it away from good guy vs. bad guy. There are really good—almost saintly—people and Superman is among them. There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or the Joker. And then there’s everybody in between them, so there are all these shades of gray which allow us to tell complex stories,” Gunn added.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic book miniseries by Tom King. “In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far,” Gunn promises.

No word yet on if the movie projects will affect TV, but they have expressed a desire to fully tie in the TV and the movies. See DC Studios’ TV plans here.
