Syfy Cancels Krypton, Passes On Lobo

It’s amazing the news that might drop when one is away from the computer for a day: Only two days after the thrilling Season 2 finale, Syfy has chosen not to renew Krypton for Season 3. Ratings for the Cameron Cuffe-starring series had dropped a bit from last season’s success — what would one expect when it’s over a year between seasons? — and being owned by a non-NBCUniversal studio surely also had a thing to do with it.

THR reported the news earlier today.

Syfy has also chosen to pass on the proposed Lobo spinoff from Krypton’s producers; supposedly, Warner Horizon will shop that one around.

Krypton as a series was something far more than “a show about Superman’s grandpa” had any right to be. After what felt like years in development, the show found a great lead in Cameron Cuffe’s Seg-El. A longtime Superman fan to the end, Cuffe seemed to relish the role. Significant contributions from folks like Georgina Campbell, Wallis Day,  Shaun Sipos, Ann Ogbomo, and Ian McElhinney, alongside some other very talented actors, elevated the material as well, and the series gave us new takes on classic icons, with Colin Salmon’s Zod and Blake Ritson’s Brainiac arguably being among the best to ever portray those characters.

Cameron Cuffe himself expressed gratitude for his time as a member of the House of El today in a Tweet:

There’s a frustration and loss to today’s news, and a hope that somehow – some way – we will see these characters again. Maybe they’ll now be free at a time of Crisis? And to Cameron: It wasn’t that long ago that we found out you had been a fan of KryptonSite since before getting the role. Well guess what? Because of the great job you did in this series, we are also fans of you.
