HBO Max Picks Up Jimmy Olsen “Comedy” Series “The People v. Gorilla Grodd”

HBO Max has greenlit a “The People v. Jimmy Olsen” spinoff from the Superman film to star Skyler Gisondo and Jimmy Tatro.

Spinning out of the 2025 Superman film directed by James Gunn, HBO has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for a new half-hour comedy that they’re calling The People v. Gorilla Grodd. This was the project from DC Comics and Warner Bros. Television that was originally incorrectly referred to as “DC Crime.” Skyler Gisondo reprises his role as Jimmy Olsen and Jimmy Tatro also stars as Gorilla Grodd.

Reprising their roles from the Superman movie are Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Also starring in the series will be Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.

Here’s how HBO Max describes it:

“A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part “true” crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers. “We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis. We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime. And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series,” they have said.

“We are thrilled to be working with Tony and Dan, alongside James, Peter, the entire DC team and our colleagues at WBTV, to bring these iconic DCU characters to HBO Max in a new and unexpected way. We already know Skyler Gisondo is pitch-perfect as Jimmy Olsen and we can’t wait for fans to experience Jimmy Tatro’s captivating and hilarious portrayal of Grodd,” says Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series.

“Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of ‘Superman’ that this would be a fun world to explore. We’re excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries,” DC Studios co-chairmen and Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran said in a statement.

Jimmy Olsen-Centered TV Spinoff Will NOT Be Called “DC Crime”

The Jimmy Olsen-centered Superman spinoff for HBO Max is confirmed by James Gunn to NOT be called “DC Crime.”

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that the Jimmy Olsen-centered HBO Max spinoff from Superman will not be called and has never been called “DC Crime,” despite early reports.

J”ust FYI there has never been a project titled ‘DC Crim'” in development, not even as a working title. I don’t know where that came from but it’s weird,” Gunn said in a comment on Threads. He did, however, point out that the wrong title doesn’t mean all of the rest of the story is false.

Apparently, people have come up to Gunn in everyday life and said “I can’t wait for DC Crime!” and Gunn himself didn’t know what they were talking about.

You can read an earlier report about this project here.

DC Crime: Jimmy Olsen-Centered Superman TV Spinoff In Development

A DC Crime series featuring Superman’s Jimmy Olsen is being developed for HBO Max.

UPDATE: James Gunn has clarified that this series will not be called DC Crime, but has implied most of the other things that have been reported are true. KryptonSite’s original article, however, will stay as-is below.

It had been known among Superman fandom that James Gunn was considering a Jimmy Olsen-centered spinoff from his 2025 Superman movie, but on TV/streaming… now, it’s closer to happening as DC has DC Crime in development for HBO Max.

The show is described as being like a “true-crime docuseries” with Jimmy Olsen as host. Skyler Gisondo will reprise his role from the movie, and some reports have suggested that others from the Daily Planet crew from the movie may be showing up. Allegedly, Season 1 will be centered around Gorilla Grodd, a character that was also seen in the Arrowverse via The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.  A character created many decades ago for DC Comics, this super-gorilla has long been a foe of The Flash, specifically…. could this mean we’ll see The Flash on TV again? And maybe could it be Wally West this time?

American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will be the showrunners and Executive Producers of the series, and of course that show was also a true crime satire type series. DC’s James Gunn and Peter Safran are also Executive Producers.

One big (and important) question: DC Crime? Can we come up with a better title? It’s not especially SEO-friendly as a “DC Crime” search will come up with the capital city of the United States. Also, what does this mean in the world of the DC Universe? Is there something called “DC” there? Maybe rethink this somehow? We’ll see what happens…
