Superman & Lois: Who Is Chrissy Beppo?

Sofia Hasmik discusses her character “Chrissy Beppo” who first appears in Superman & Lois Episode 2

Published

on

The second episode of Superman & Lois airing on March 2 gives us formal introductions to a few characters. One of them is Adam Rayner’s Morgan Edge, who is going to certainly be an antagonist for Lois Lane as the series goes on. But, the episode also introduces us to a character who may become a great friend and ally to Lois — “Chrissy Beppo,” reporter for the Smallville Gazette, played with an almost Chloe Sullivan-like zest (without the real world weirdness) by an actress named Sofia Hasmik who was seen on Spectrum’s Mad About You update.

“Chrissy works so hard at the Smallville Gazette, and I think we’re all going to have this opportunity to really see her step into the position of an investigative journalist,” Hasmik said at a recent TCA panel for Superman & Lois. “She is very obviously and clearly inspired by her idol, Lois Lane, and I think wants to make her proud, and wants to make herself proud, and she really gains confidence from that. It’s also a nice reminder what like chance encounters can lead to, and where your life can go from that.”

(At this point in the Q&A Elizabeth Tulloch asked “Chance encounters… or stalking?”)

“A little bit of both; a smidge of both,” Hasmik shot back.

The character name at least may be familiar to fans of Smallville as “Christopher James Beppo” was the name of the author of the “Ezra Small Prophecies” for the Warner Bros.-produced Smallville Ledger website tying in to that show. Ezra’s “prophecies” sometimes gave fans early hints and spoilers. The character was visually seen in the Justice and Doom transmedia initiative for the series, and yes, at least the “Christopher James Beppo” character was named after the super-monkey. Hopefully we’ll have an official still of Sofia Hasmik as Chrissy Beppo soon.

Interview: My Adventures of Superman Producers on Season 2

The producers of My Adventures with Superman preview Season 2 of the Adult Swim series.

Published

on

The first two episodes of My Adventures of Superman Season 2 drop at midnight tonight (May 25) on Adult Swim and will be available the next day on MAX. To promote the new season, KryptonSite spoke with Alice Lee and Ishmel Sahid (Lois and Jimmy) in an interview that can be read and seen here; tonight, though, the spotlight falls on the show’s Co-Executive Producers Jake Wyatt and Brendan Clogher and Co-Producer Josie Campbell! Be warned, SPOILERS are being discussed!

The first item up for discussion, of course, was the coming of Supergirl in Season 2… and addressing that character is Josie Campbell, a producer and writer who brought us adventures of another heroine on the She-Ra series.

“I got to write that episode that introduces her, which is fun,” Campbell says. “I’ll try not to get into spoiler territory, but I think we like every character we’ve worked on on the show. the core of her stays the same, but we’re putting some twists on her and her background, and some twists in who she is and how she relates to Clark,” she teases.

“Everything for us is about the character, and I think the other thing that is exciting about Supergirl is you’re gonna get to see her play against all three characters and have very different dynamics… with Lois, Jimmy and Clark. Some fun, some not, some terrifying. It’s just all over the place. I’m excited for people to see her,” she adds.

As for another addition for the new season. “Alex”…. that is who we think it is, rihgt?

“Yeah, that’s Lex,” Brendan Clogher says, before Jake Wyatt explains how that all came about.

“So, he’s Alex in Season 1, because they told us we couldn’t put Lex Luthor in the show,” he explains. “And then Brendan was like, we’re gonna write this character named Alex and he’s gonna be Ivo’s assistant, and then he’s going to have an angry rant about Superman later on, and it’s then it’s us in the room being like, ‘is this Lex Luthor?’ and then our executives are being like ‘is this Lex Luthor?’ and when Brendan would just go, ‘do you want him to be?’ He got away with it! He got past the Lex Luthor ban with Alex, and got Lex Luthor grandfathered into Season 2!”

Finally, family is an important part of Season 2, especially with people and their parents, and those relationships will be deepened in Season 2. Josie Campbell promises this will continue to be a theme, especially for Lois and Clark. “We’ve got some really good character centric episodes especially for Lois coming up, that really dig more into that question of nature versus nurture… where you come from versus who you want to be, and the fact that where you come from can often complicate who you want to be, and sometimes be a barrier and obstacle,” she teases. “Identity is tied up in family, and so that is a theme that we are going to be exploring very much in season two.”

“Your parents are the people that you think are the best in all the world, but you don’t even call them by their name. You’re not even familiar with their basic, every day identity,” Wyatt adds. “So, both Clark and Lois as they go through the season, are going to discover more complexities about who their parents are. We’re going to have a constantly changing and updating narrative about who these people were, and what they did, and how we should feel about them.”

You can watch the entire interview below, where among other topics we also discuss limitations that the new Superman movie may have put on the show, dream guest voices from Superman history, and more. Oh, and Jake Wyatt promises that Krypton is coming, and it’s going to be weird! Enjoy, and don’t miss the season premiere episodes tonight!

My Adventures with Superman Actors Preview Season 2

Interview with actors Alice Lee (Lois Lane) and Ishmel Sahid (Jimmy Olsen) about My Adventures with Superman Season 2

Published

on

My Adventures with Superman has proven to be one of the best animated adaptations of the Superman story with the second season premiering this week – May 25 on Adult Swim. The new season will introduce characters such as Supergirl and Lex Luthor to the story while continuing to spotlight the delightful trio of Clark, Lois, and Jimmy.

To promote My Adventures with Superman Season 2, KryptonSite had the opportunity to interview two of the series’ lead voice actors – Alice Lee (Lois Lane) and Ishmel Sahid (Jimmy Olsen) – for some insights on what’s to come, what’s been fun so far, and their own Super-fandom. You can watch the interview within the video embed, or you can read along below. Enjoy!

KRYPTONSITE’S CRAIG BYRNE: For my first question for both of you, had you been fans of Superman before taking these roles?

ISHMEL SAHID: Yeah. Specifically, I was a fan of Justice League. I remember watching that in the high school… Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. So essentially, yes.

ALICE LEE: Same. I mean, I just love superhero stuff, and Superman is just so iconic. I used to watch Smallville growing up, and so that was a big thing. I was super honored and shocked that I got Lois Lane and that I get to be a part of this universe. I wouldn’t have thought..! So it’s very cool. I’m very honored.

Both Lois and Jimmy will get to interact more with the General this year. Can you talk about that?

ALICE LEE: Yeah, I mean, obviously, for Lois, the General is her father, and [we’ll be] seeing that relationship evolve, especially after the Season 1 ending where he does stand up for her, he listens to her, and he doesn’t hurt Superman. Now we’re gonna see how the General also evolves and how their relationship grows. The dad-daughter relationship is very complex and very layered. I think that’ll be an interesting and very exciting storyline as well for season two.

KRYPTONSITE: Would you say that learning more about the parents of the characters is a theme for Season 2?

ALICE LEE: Oh, yeah, I guess so… because also for Clark and Superman, we get to see Jor-El stuff. We’ve got to see Jimmy’s parents, too, now!

ISHMEL SAHID: I know! they’re out there.

KRYPTONSITE: So, no news on Jimmy’s family showing up?

ISHMEL SAHID: You know what? They support him. They’re huge supporters of Flamebird. We know that they like and subscribe to the page. We can assume that in his new millions that he’s bought his parents something. So, they’re definitely out there.

KRYPTONSITE: Can you talk about Jimmy’s new job, and how does it take away from his time with his buddies Clark and Lois?

ISHMEL SAHID: I mean, essentially, it doesn’t. I feel like Jimmy is always one of those people who constantly wants to bring in his friends, in his world, and in his newfound success, So, I think he’s always cognisant about that. It’s just [that] he just has a little bit more money, and a little bit more gumption in how he goes about certain things now with this newfound wealth.

Money will change anybody, but I feel like Jimmy still stays true to his his core morals and values. He still wants to be that good friend to both Clark and Lois.

KRYPTONSITE: I hear you all record your lines separately. How do you develop such great chemistry that way?

ISHMEL SAHID: The director, writers… at least for me, when I was in the booth, them directing us. I had no idea how they would sound as their characters. It’s just magic, how they do everything in post. I still don’t know… I just know that we all bring our best to it, and it kind of just works out.

ALICE LEE: I don’t know. You tell me… how did they do it? But yeah, I agree with Ishmal. I think their direction… because they know what everyone else is doing…. they’ll kind of lead us in that direction. I think maybe once in a while, when you guys have recorded before me, they would let me hear the snippets, but at the end of the day, yeah, it’s just the finished product, and I think it’s so cool that they were able to create that chemistry. I’m sure when they cast us they, they knew that that was going to be there, which is why we also got cast, but yeah. Magic, totally.

KRYPTONSITE: What is your favorite part about the Lois and Clark dynamic on this show?

ALICE LEE: I feel so many things. I just love that the relationship feels so wholesome and pure. We’re seeing all of the awkward moments, the glances, the blushing… I just think it’s super sweet, but also it feels super real. They both get to be vulnerable, and I think [those are] signs of a healthy relationship.

We’re getting to see them just kind of grow together, and listen to each other, and actually be there for each other. It’s just like the rom-com that I want to see, and I want to be in, and I’m in it, so that’s very cool. It’s just so sweet and wholesome. I giggle when I watch it. I blush when I watch it. So

KRYPTONSITE: Last year, Jack Quaid was able to play his Star Trek animated character in live action. Would you have any interest in playing live action versions of Lois and Jimmy someday?

ISHMEL SAHID: Absolutely. That would be awesome. I’m gonna speak that into the universe that it happens, sooner than later.

ALICE LEE: Same. 100%. Yeah.

KRYPTONSITE: Are there any guest voices you would love to hear on the show and work with?

ALICE LEE: I don’t know specifically, but I’m sure anyone who would come in would be sick, like any from any universe, or any rendition!

ISHMEL SAHID: I would want Keith David to do something.

KRYPTONSITE: There have been many adaptations of Superman over the years. What is something that you’d say is particularly special or unique about what My Adventures with Superman brings?

ISHMEL SAHID: I think it’s the anime lens through it. It’s just the icing on the cake of how they were able to still capture just like the essence of that, but it still has like this warmth and comic book feel to it. It still stays true to the lore of the comic books, but I think it gives it a much more of a youthful, young, fun feeling, so to speak. It’s always fun watching it through that lens.

ALICE LEE: I feel like our show is just a fresh take. It’s something I haven’t seen before in the Superman world. And again, seeing all of our characters just starting out, instead of already kind of settled in their positions, and, also more of a focus on Clark, rather than Superman, and seeing Clark’s relationship with Jimmy and Lois, I think is fun. It’s quirky, it’s funny, but it’s so heartfelt, and it’s so wholesome, and I think that’s new. I think we need more bright things to watch that aren’t, like, blood. We love blood and gore too, but you know, just something that feels wholesome. That’s the key word I keep thinking of.

KRYPTONSITE: What do you think fans will be most excited to see in Season 2?

ALICE LEE: I think the introduction of some characters, for sure. Kara is obviously going to be introduced… Clark’s cousin… and that’ll be fun. I think fans are excited to see the characters they love now come into our world.

ISHMEL SAHID: The villains. Seeing a younger version of that.

Don’t miss the premiere of My Adventures with Superman Season 2 on March 25! It will also be available on the MAX streaming service the next day. Big thanks to Alice Lee and Ishmel Sahid for taking the time to do this interview!

Superman & Lois: Full Interview with Inde Navarrette (Sarah)

Full interview with Inde Navarrette who plays Sarah Cortez on Superman & Lois

Published

on

Last week, we ran some preview questions for “Collision Course” with actress Inde Navarrette who plays Sarah Cortez. As a new episode airs tonight (June 6), it felt right to share our full interview with Inde. We’re starting with relationship talk since that’s where the previous piece seemed to leave off. Be aware some minor spoilers may be discussed within.

KRYPTONSITE’S CRAIG BYRNE: Sarah’s preference for herself with Jordan would be for them to just be good friends, right?

INDE NAVARRETTE: For me as a viewer, I would love to see that friendship. You know what I mean? It’s definitely something that was there in the beginning, and then they went straight into a relationship. I think it’s important to see them as friends and good friends and being there for each other.

Was it fun to film that scene at the party in Metropolis earlier that the season where the two of them were working together as friends?

Absolutely. Are you kidding me? Throwing a beer and saying ‘here’s your beer, bitch,’ and then going back and forth… that was one of the best days to film. Me and Alex had the time of our lives. I’m definitely wanting to do that again.

Am I imagining things and seeing some chemistry between Jonathan and Sarah?

You shut your mouth! You be quiet! What are you saying that for? What’s wrong with you? Sarah would never do that!

Yeah, it’s funny… me and Michael have definitely picked up on that. And we’re like, what is this? What is this? It’s definitely a question. I don’t know where it’s gonna go, but it’s definitely a question.

I love this Sarah and Jonathan combination. In Seasons 1 and 2, Jonathan and Sarah definitely had a relationship that was so chemistry-filled, I think, and it’s so specific to the characters. Michael [Bishop] did such a good job coming in, and picking up on that, and doing it in his own way. And it seems so beautiful, to where it still is there. You know what I mean? It’s something that’s been there since day one that we still carry. I think it’s definitely something, for sure. As Inde, I’m  screaming at them like “don’t do the brothers trope!” But then me as somebody who reads books, I’m like “maybe do the brother trope.”

Do you as a cast have theories on where Sophie disappears to when she’s not in an episode?

That is the biggest joke on set! We’re like “she’s in Guatemala!” We have this joke where she’s the villain and she’s secretly the mastermind behind everything, because she’s so angry at her family. We’ll joke around about the fact that it’s actually Bizarro Sophie. We don’t ever stop talking about it. And the fact that they even wrote it into the script… when we got that script [where Sophie was missing], I thought I was gonna die laughing, because it was a joke that we made on set, and the fact that it’s actually in the script…. you can only see so many comments before you go “yeah, we should definitely address that. Where is she?”

Didn’t you do an interview at one point where you just went “Who’s Sophie?” or did I imagine that?

Yeah, that definitely happened. We talked about siblings, [and I was] like “I have a sister?”

Is there anything about Sarah that you wish the show had handled differently?

I think Season 1 a very big tell of who Sarah is. In Season 1, she’s extremely reserved, and really wanting to understand where everyone’s coming from. She’s still an angry child because of everything that she’s going through with her family and friends and everything, so there’s this understanding and connection between her and Jordan, because they have that understanding of feeling lost in a family and not knowing what to do, or having mental health issues. I think over the years, she’s kind of projected onto Jordan instead of taking care of her own things. I definitely love her arc this season, because she’s coming back to herself in the manner of who she was before, rather than solely focusing on on Jordan. I would say that we’re definitely getting there, for sure.

My personal head-canon is that Sarah is the coolest teenager in all of Smallville… so how did she not know who The Cure are?

I brought that up so many times! That is not a me question. That is a writer question. Call them, because I don’t know. Also, whenever they were talking about Alanis Morissette…. Are you kidding me? She doesn’t know who that is? Anyway…

Is there a particular storyline that you would like to see in the future for Sarah?

I would love to see her with the boys and Nat, and helping out…. maybe be the getaway driver.

She’s done a lot with her family. She’s done a lot with her parents. I would love to see her with the kids more, not being the emotional teenager or a kid.

There’s a scene, I think it’s in episode five, when they go to get Jon’s truck back… I remember watching the stunts and I remember watching it being performed and I just sat there like, “I so badly wish that Sarah was a part of this, because I think that she would be able to heighten that.” I think maybe that’s why her and Jonathan have such chemistry, because they’re the two in their families where they know that they’re capable of doing everything that they can, but the people around them kind of have a one up. Nat has her suit, and Jordan has his powers, but me and Jonathan can throw a punch. We can throw beer in people’s faces and can take care of something. I can be the getaway driver!

Do you think anybody’s going to let her be the getaway driver after last week’s episode, though?

That’s a good question. I would say her driving was phenomenal. It just was extracurricular activities that caused issues!

Earlier this season, you had a very charged scene with Emmanuelle [Chriqui] as Lana… you know which one I’m talking about. Was that hard to prepare for, working with somebody who’s your friend and getting in her face, and then her character slaps you?

That day was definitely something. Emmanuelle and I have such a good relationship. I just remember that time being so at peace with myself, and then we have to go film this scene. There’s a moment where I, as Inde, a 22 year old actress, have to really remove myself from Sarah because the things that Sarah says, as a teenager… my heart breaks. I hate those words, I hate them coming out of my mouth, and I hate saying them to Emmanuelle. That is, I would say, the most difficult part about being Sarah, saying those things. I, as an actor, have to make it to where I understand why she’s saying those things, so I could play it honestly, and during that day where I say stuff like “that’s why Dad cheated on you” I think the only way that could be is because she’s frustrated with everything that’s going on, and she’s trying to say everything that comes out. It doesn’t mean she’s saying it with anger, but sometimes you’ll say things when you genuinely don’t mean it, you’re just saying it, but it causes a reaction in the other person.

So to play it that way, and then to have Emmanuelle’s reaction, it was really tough. I let her actually slap me five or six times. Greg, the director was like, “okay, we’re not gonna do it on this one… we’re gonna do on this one…” There’s one time where Emmanuelle did it, and I was like “you’ve got to slap me harder. I love you, but you’ve got to slap me harder.” Then another time she fully clapped my ear, and as I was walking away, I was like, “I hear a symphony. There are bells ringing in my brain!” I didn’t say anything, because they would have been like “you’re done” and I was like, “no, we’ve got to get this.” Watch now me talking about it, they’re going to be like “you don’t do your own stuff anymore.”

We will see more friendship between Sarah and Nat?

I think so.

How good do you feel about the possibility of still getting a fourth season?

We’re really looking forward to it. We haven’t heard anything back. If I get to work with them again, I’m happy. We all keep in touch, and it was such a beautiful set to be on. So hopefully, hopefully, hopefully. If not, I had a phenomenal time.

How excited were you when you heard the show was going to be getting Michael Cudlitz as Lex Luthor?

It’s been a lifelong joke between me and Todd Helbing, the showrunner, about shaving my head. I’ll joke like “Sarah’s gonna shave her head in this episode!”

It’s a lifelong dream of mine to shave my head, and not only to do that, but to do it for something that I love, like my job. So I get on set, and I [met him], and I said, “what did you do today?” And he was like, “Well, you know, we did the scene where we shaved his head.” And… I couldn’t stop it from coming out of my mouth… I was like, “you m$#%$^$&#$%@$.” It was the first time I ever met him, so I think we got off to a really good start of getting to really know each other. It was amazing.

Do you think she could be his bald minion?

I hope so! Sarah needs to just be taken under his wing, and fully become his protege.

Regardless of if there’s a fourth season or not, are there certain friendships and relationships that you will take with you?

Everybody. This entire set… it’s one of those things where it’s so specific. We went through something like COVID together. We became a family. We got to know each other, snd it’s such a beautiful thing to be able to experience. I’m really close with Erik who plays my dad, and I’m close with his family. I’m really close to Emmanuelle and Wolé and Sofia and Tayler and Michael and Alex… it was such a beautiful experience, and I’ll hold it very near and dear to my heart.

Superman & Lois has a new episode titled “Complications” airing TONIGHT at 8PM ET/PT on The CW.
