Could Supergirl Move To The CW?

Rumors are swirling that Supergirl could possibly move to The CW.

While we’re still waiting anxiously for CBS to announce a Season 2 pickup for Supergirl, today comes a report from Variety that rumors are flying that Supergirl could move to The CW. Here is exactly what they said:

Meanwhile, rumors are again flying that “Supergirl” could shift over to the CW, should it get renewed. While sources tell Variety there have been discussions, a network insider shot down the speculation.

Do note they say “a network insider shot down the speculation,” which could mean “it’s not happening;” it could also mean that the people who are involved in such decisions just aren’t talking.

Worlds FinestHere at KryptonSite, we continue to know nothing, aside from noting the body language of producers and cast at the recent Paley Center event which implied that everyone was positive about there being a Season 2. Studio Warner Bros. Television also seems to love Supergirl. If CBS is to pass, maybe Supergirl at The CW would be a thing that would happen.

The CW is already full of DC television shows, with Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow all coming from the Greg Berlanti production world and iZombie coming from Rob Thomas and DC’s Vertigo arm. The CW will almost surely be adding Riverdale from Greg Berlanti and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, based on the Archie Comics characters. Adding Supergirl would bring them a very comic-heavy schedule, yet at the same time Supergirl would totally fit The CW brand. Also… let’s be honest… it’s about time for another heroine on The CW, and the last time the network had a Kryptonian on the air, it lasted for ten years. Plus, being around so many other heroes could boost ratings for every show — they could all be “Stronger Together.”

We should also point out that last year, when people were unsure on whether or not CBS would order Supergirl, there was a short-lived “Supergirl on The CW” rumor from a season zero type site that routinely makes things up. We don’t know what that site is saying this year, but we are acknowledging that such “rumors” have been out and proven wrong before. However, with a reputable source like Variety addressing that such rumors are out there, it’s possible this might have legs.

No matter what happens — and we will know before May 18, when CBS announces their 2016-2017 schedule — we just know (a) we want a Supergirl Season 2, and (b) if the show does move networks, hopefully all of the key elements *cough*Cat Grant*cough* will be able to make such a move. Think good thoughts, everybody!

I thought this may happen when Tom Cavanagh said Supergirl is moving their set to Vancouver last week on Hollywood Today Live. Well not the CW part but big changes for the show.

Whoa, he did? That’s news to me… didn’t hear anything about that…

Just saw what he said, and it’s curious: He said “Supergirl is filming in Vancouver next week” or something like that. They wouldn’t be filming Season 2 yet… unless… Supergirl is making a surprise appearance in the Flash finale?

        Man that would be cool.

Variety has now given themselves over to speculative click-bait articles in order to compete with their sister blog at Deadline. How the once mighty entertainment news source has fallen on hard times and desperate measures to get attention. They might as well be TMZ or Perez Hilton at this point. More unsubstantiated drivel in light of no concrete Supergirl series news, since CBS hasn’t renewed any of their freshman shows, and they’ve still got plenty of time before the May 18th Upfronts rolls around,.

They never said anything was definitely happening, though, and reporting that there’s talk or rumors of something is relevant and newsworthy.

No, it’s not ‘newsworthy. It’s mindless click bait speculation pretending to be news. Variety is full of crap, and this isn’t the first time they’ve been caught pandering to the fan boy rumor mill. Besides, The CW schedule is already full; the only holdout at this point is whether they’re going to give the series order to another Berlanti show, Riverdale. Supergirl is CBS’ 6th most popular show; it’s fate is entirely safe where it already is.

CBS also doesn’t own Supergirl outright, so the shows they actually own are of a higher importance to them in the long run. Believe me, I want Supergirl Season 2 more than anybody, but if CBS thinks they could make more money from an hour of mediocre sitcoms vs. giving Warner Bros. TV a big license fee for Supergirl, they’d go with the mediocre sitcoms.

I still think this is a valid thing to be discussed, even if it doesn’t happen. And by the way: Riverdale will definitely not be the only new CW series order. That part I can say for sure. It might be the only one for the Fall, but we’ll certainly get something else, for midseason or otherwise.

So glad to have your expert opinion, Vince. I’m sure [as your IP address implies] home in the Philippines gives you access to all kinds of insider information.

This is why this is a speculative article, with a question mark at the end.

I don’t need insider information to know it won’t happen. 100% WB-produced shows: The Flash,Arrow,Supernatural, Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie & Containment. Riverdale is also 100% WB. Co-owned network right?

I hope Supergirl continues regardless of where it ends up.
I did read that Berlanti says CW can’t afford Supergirl. If it did end up going to CW, it makes me worry they’d slash the budget on the show. What I want to know is why would CBS sit on a cancellation revelation. Are they saving the news that it’s renewed for the upfronts event later this month?

CBS hasn’t announced any of their freshman series renewals yet, though Glenn Geller of CBS did say “we’re renewing 5” a few months ago; he may have been getting ahead of himself. I think they’re probably waiting to see how their new pilots turned out and then, of course, negotiating with producers and studios and all that.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Release Date Announced

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film is currently scheduled for a 2026 release.

The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film has had a release date announced — and it’s less than a year after James Gunn’s Superman.

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that the new film for the Maid of Might — based on the comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely — is on the schedule for June 26, 2026. Of course, plans can and often do change, but that’s where it’s set for now. The film is said to “depart from the earnest take on the character” that was seen on The CW’s Supergirl TV series.

Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, and it is expected that we will see her before this movie — in Superman, perhaps? Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is the director.

New Supergirl Featurette Includes Laura Vandervoort, Melissa Benoist & More

Supergirl actresses Laura Vandervoort, Melissa Benoist, Sasha Calle, and Helen Slater are included in a retrospective featurette on The Flash Blu-ray.

One of the rare good elements from the recent Flash movie was the inclusion of Sasha Calle as Supergirl, and now, we can revisit her and a few old Supergirl favorites, as Laura Vandervoort (Smallville), Melissa Benoist (Supergirl TV series from The CW & CBS), and Helen Slater (movies’ original Supergirl) are all included on a featurette on The Flash movie home release. These are all new interviews with the actresses, and in some cases, these are their first interviews about the character in years. The title of the featurette is “Supergirl: The Last Daughter of Krypton.”

Although a Twitter/X report from “Sennaverse” on Twitter notes that the documentary can be found on the MAX streaming service, we have had no luck finding it there so far. The featurette is included, however, with purchase of The Flash movie on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. The set is due for release on Tuesday, August 29. You can purchase that here and support KryptonSite if you wish!

We’re looking forward to seeing these new interviews and spotlight on the Woman of Tomorrow!

New Superman & Supergirl Movies Announced

James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced new Supergirl and Superman movie projects.

Published

on

New DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced two new movies that will make Super-fans take notice. One is a new Superman film titled Superman: Legacy and it will be out in 2025; the other is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series.

Scheduled for July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy will be written by James Gunn and the hope is that he will also direct it. “t’s not an origin story. It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned,” Peter Safran said during the announcement.

“With our stories, we want to take it away from good guy vs. bad guy. There are really good—almost saintly—people and Superman is among them. There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or the Joker. And then there’s everybody in between them, so there are all these shades of gray which allow us to tell complex stories,” Gunn added.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on the comic book miniseries by Tom King. “In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far,” Gunn promises.

No word yet on if the movie projects will affect TV, but they have expressed a desire to fully tie in the TV and the movies. See DC Studios’ TV plans here.
