smallville welcomeSMALLVILLE 200: Pilot Director David Nutter Reflects On Smallville's Beginning & Continued Success

Interview by Craig Byrne

At the Smallville 200th Episode Red Carpet on September 25, KryptonSite and several other media outlets spoke with members of the show's cast and crew for exclusive interviews.

We've been posting interviews here on KryptonSite for the past few weeks (you can find them from the News page), and this week specifically, we will be rolling out even more interviews about the show's 200th episode, which airs Friday, October 15 on The CW.

smallville original posterToday, we catch up with the director of Smallville's very first episode - David Nutter. The prolific director is somewhat famous in the TV world for having every pilot that he directed turn into a series. Nutter's list of pilots that went to series include Space: Above and Beyond, Millennium, Sleepwalkers, Roswell, Dark Angel, Smallville, Tarzan, Without a Trace, Dr. Vegas, Jack & Bobby, Supernatural, Traveler, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Eastwick, Chase, and The Mentalist.

When you were directing the pilot almost ten years ago, did you ever expect to someday be attending the 200th episode party for the show?

I had no idea that it would go this far, but I knew how good the show was, and I knew how strong the characters were, and I knew that anything was possible with this show.

Was there anything in the process of developing the pilot that surprised you, back in 2001?

So much of it was about casting; finding actors like Tom, and Allison, and Kristin, and Michael of course. They melded together so perfectly. They just felt like they fit. There's something with respect to karma and all of those things, and it's really something that I strongly believe in. Al and Miles put together an amazing bedrock with the script and the story, and we put together this great cast, and it all sang so beautifully.
