Why Isn’t Supergirl Picked Up For Season 2 Yet?

After CBS announced that they renewed several series for the 2016-2017 TV season last week, we’re getting a lot of questions about Supergirl’s future…. after all, beyond a comment from Les Moonves about renewing 5 freshman series, there hasn’t been any official announcement.

Our advice?

Don’t worry.

CBS hasn’t announced additional season pickups for ANY of its first-year series. No Limitless, no Code Black… it hasn’t happened.

Secondly, I’ve covered TV long enough to be able to tell when a network and a studio have given up on a show… and that certainly hasn’t happened here. Tonight’s “Worlds Finest” is a huge, highly-publicized deal. On that same note, Supergirl’s power on social media cannot be beat. If Supergirl were to disappear, the Internet would be madder than an alien fugitive.

Warner Bros. Television seems very committed to Supergirl also, as do the producers. If it looked like there won’t be a Season 2, the demeanor of the producers and cast at the recent PaleyFest would have been a lot more dour. Instead, people are talking about their hopes for Season 2. Why would they talk about, say, getting Lynda Carter to appear in Season 2 if there isn’t going to be one?

A Season 2 announcement is probably coming. While most networks announced things early this year, some shows’ fates aren’t officially announced until late April or early May, right before Upfronts in the middle of May.

A lot of factors go into these decisions. CBS has to decide which new show pilots they like. They have to see how well new shows like Rush Hour do. And, of course, they have to negotiate with the studio, since CBS doesn’t outright own Supergirl; Warner Bros. Television does.

Does this author expect to see Supergirl Season 2, though? Absolutely. Don’t worry – don’t fret – though still be sure to tell your friends to watch! New episode TONIGHT!
