Season 2 Update: Could Supergirl Move To Vancouver?

A few days ago here on KryptonSite, we posted the article “Could Supergirl Move To The CW?” which was met with some “noooo!”s and groans of clickbait sent in the direction of our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Now, it seems that there are more rumors and talk that Supergirl might move… somewhere in order to secure a Season 2.

Earlier this week, TheWrap posted an article talking about a possible CW move and budget cuts to ensure a second season for Supergirl, which is not officially renewed by CBS for Season 2. (CBS announces their Fall schedule May 18). Now, the very reliable Deadline has chimed in, alleging that there have been exploratory talks about moving the show to Vancouver for filming. There are also talks about lowering the license fee and/or the number of episodes for Season 2.

Some good news in all this is that the Deadline article also claims that multiple networks and digital platforms are interested in Supergirl, so the show sounds as though it’s far from dead.

Interestingly, Tom Cavanagh of The Flash did an interview last week where he mentioned Supergirl filming in Vancouver “next week,” as pointed out by a KryptonSite reader…. we still don’t totally know what that means, but his comments can be found after the 3:00 mark. Was he talking about production going up there to check it out? A Melissa Benoist cameo somewhere? We have no idea:

Us? We’d be okay with a Vancouver move, if it meant more of our favorite current TV series starring a Kryptonian. There are some talented crews up North, and it is to be assumed that the writers currently working on Supergirl would stay no matter where they go. Budget cuts? Okay, you all can have fewer sets as long as you assure me my favorite queen of all media is still a part of the show. And the girl with the “S.” And her sister. And that alien guy. And her best friend. And her cousin’s best friend. And… you get the point. It is the opinion of this writer that if a move to The CW [or anywhere] gives us 5 more years of Supergirl vs. only one more, possibly short season on CBS… I’d be down for that. I just want more. Even if it means making Vancouver look like Los Ang… err, “National City.” Lucifer’s doing it already.

In any event, we’ll know more soon, and as soon as we know anything, we’ll be posting about it here at KryptonSite. For now, though, the studio and the network are NOT confirming anything on the record (or off the record, at least to us), but it does seem like Supergirl’s future is actively being speculated about.

  • The difference between The Wrap's click-bait speculation piece and Deadline's article is that Deadline actually had reasonable substance in its expose instead. The Supergirl show lost its California tax credits, which is why there's a major budgetary concern. However, moving to Vancouver might not be a safe haven for the show's current budget crisis either, since the BC government just voted to reduce its film production tax subsidies from 33 to 28 percent. This change in the tax law takes effect in October, and will likely affect EVERY TV and film currently in production.

But as far as that BS over The CW, it still isn't going to happen. At the end of the day, Supergirl is still the #1 new drama of the season for CBS, and they're simply not going to give away their most high profile rookie show.

    • You would think that would have been the case and that CBS would have held onto it. But I guess by moving it to CW it stays in the corporate family, as opposed to letting the show move to a true rival network.
