Krypton’s Cameron Welsh Updates Hawkwoman Plans

Last summer when Adam Strange was revealed as coming to the Syfy television series Krypton, the name “Hawkwoman” was also dropped. But then… nothing. We asked Executive Producer Cameron Welsh about the notion at the Television Critics Association press tour, but again, we didn’t get much of an answer.

Now that Krypton has finished filming its first season, we asked Welsh yet again what the plans for Hawkwoman might be, as she is a DC Comics character with quite a fan following.

“We went into the season with the intention of introducing Hawkwoman,” Welsh admitted. “We started plotting it out, and figuring out how to best use Hawkwoman and how she fits in… but as we got into the nitty gritty of really breaking the story, we became aware that we really do have a big cast of characters as it is, and we have a lot of story already, especially being in the first season. There’s a lot of screen time and story real estate required just to set up the world and introduce all of these new characters, and have people understand.”

“It’s an alien culture; it operates differently,” the producer continued. “So, it takes a bit of time to set all of that up, and we felt like by trying to squeeze Hawkwoman in here, we will ultimately do a disservice to that character, and we’ll do a disservice to the rest of our characters, because it will feel like it’s just been jammed in there. It’s better show some restraint and wait and have a more powerful introduction to the character.”

So, maybe Season 2? Or is Thanagar coming to Syfy in 2021? Kidding about that last part. Krypton airs Wednesdays on Syfy.
