Creation Entertainment’s “Salute to Smallville” convention is happening this weekend in Parsnippany-Troy Hills, New Jersey (read more about it here), and KryptonSite’s Craig Byrne will be there and a part of it, joining a variety of guests from the series including Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, Michael Rosenbaum, John Glover, Laura Vandervoort, and Aaron Ashmore. In anticipation of the October 5-6 event, we were able to interview Erica – our first time talking since Smallville was on the air! – to find out about the convention experience, her return to playing Lois Lane in Crisis, the Smallville animated project, and more. Enjoy!
KRYPTONSITE’S CRAIG BYRNE: I know you’ve done conventions before, but how does it feel to be doing the first completely dedicated to Smallville convention?
ERICA DURANCE: A little nerve wracking, and also fantastic. I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to spending more time with the fans. Creation runs these really great events. They have a good schedule, and they have such good ideas of what we can do and how we can interact. I’m really looking forward to being able to be a part of it and see everybody.
What can fans look forward to seeing at this event?
I know that we will be doing panels. I know that the boys do their “Smallville Nights” which are super, super fun. I think the fans really enjoy when we’re at the table and we chit chat. A lot of us spend a lot of time talking to people there. And photo ops! I’m not sure what else they’re throwing at us, but I do know that there’s a lot more time spent with fans, which is why we’re doing it!
When you got to the call to play Lois Lane again in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, was that something you had ever expected to do, or did you just figure you were Alura already and that was it?
I just figured I was Alura, and that was that, and I was moving on to other things. Then I was working on a movie for a friend of mine, and I got a text partway through the show, and I just got so excited. I couldn’t believe it! I was really thrilled. I was very excited.
They wrote a really fun little scene for me, and it’s so easy to work with Welling. We have a really good repartee, and I felt like it was just as if we had seen each other the day before, and I hadn’t seen him for 10 years. It was great.
Would you have liked to have gotten to spend more time seeing what Lois was up to these days?
Oh, sure! I liked playing her. I felt very lucky to do it. II always know that the people that are behind all this, that write these different versions and these different scenes and these different shows, are so good, so I don’t really particularly worry about that part so much. I know I’ll be doing something fun and different, and every scene is unique. So, yeah, I would have been fine with doing a little more.
You’re reuniting with several of your castmates at this convention, but also you have an episode of Murder in a Small Town that you did with Kristin. Did you have any scenes together, ad did you know it was Kristin’s show when you booked it?
Oh, yeah. She called me! And we had quite a few things together, and it was great fun. You know, other than a couple of times we worked together on Smallville, we haven’t worked that much [together] professionally. We’ve been really good friends for years and done other things, but not work together.
I remember feeling like I was about 20 years old again. I started to look at her, and we’re in the circus, and I looked down, and we just both shriek. People don’t know that we’ve known each other for so long, right? It was so cool.
Fans have also loved it whenever you’ve shown up on Tom and Michael’s podcast. Might you be showing up on it more in the future?
I don’t know. It depends on schedule, and timing, and what they’re doing and what I’m doing, but it’s always nice to get back and chat about certain episodes and how we felt about doing different things.
Did your impression of Smallville change after you started doing conventions?
I would say not so much, because I came into that show knowing it was successful. I knew it was special. I was excited to be a part of it. I wasn’t so fully entrenched in it as Welling was in the sense that he was there all the time, and I had a little bit of that objective bird’s eye view of ‘hey, you know, I know what the fans are thinking. I know that I’m excited, because I know they’re gonna like it. And I would say I’m surprised at how long it’s been that we’re going back around and talking about it, but not negatively. It’s wonderful.
What do you think is the magic chemistry between Lois and Clark, whether it’s on Smallville or other projects? What makes them work so well?
I think they balance each other’s strengths and weaknesses, regardless of the incarnation you see. There are moments that Clark’s very, very strong, and he’s a hero, and he can do everything that he needs to do, and is able to help Lois, who’s this strong woman, but needs help. And then you’ll see the flip side of it, where it’s in her humanity that he feels a level of connection. I think it’s that balance between both sides of parts of themselves, and it just seems to work.
I know you had a memorable experience meeting Margot Kidder at a convention, but is there any other Lois Lane actor that you would love to meet someday?
I’d love to meet Teri Hatcher. I’ve never met her!
What other projects do you have coming up?
I did the show for Kristin [Murder in a Small Town], and then I have two two Christmas movies coming out on Hallmark. They’re a little bit of a departure for me, and I’m excited about them. In one I play a 1960s housewife, and in the next one that I’m currently shooting right now, I’m the Queen Mother of — it’s not a fantasy land, but it’s not a real land [either]. She’s taking care of her daughter and trying to get her on the right path. They’re really different roles for me, but I really enjoy them because they’re quite far away from the person that I really am. It actually felt quite good.
Would you like to do the animated project that Tom and Michael are trying to get off the ground?
Absolutely. I think it would be great. Especially if they have Al and Miles [Gough and Millar, the creators of Smallville] behind it, which they seem to be talking about… then you know that there’s going to be a level of consistency with the characters, and the dialogue, and all that kind of stuff.
Have your kids found out yet that you played Lois Lane?
They don’t quite know what that means yet. They don’t think it’s that cool. They think Superman is pretty cool, but I think I’m just so different in real life to what they see up there, that it’s really hard for them to gel that like in any way their mom played a character that was somewhat cool.
They just think I’m the biggest nerd, so they find it weird that Mommy would be considered cool.
There was one time when they didn’t think I was tough, so I was like “let me show you some things.” I just YouTubed a lot of my fights [as Lois], and they were like, “Mommy, you were angry!” And I was like, “don’t mess with me, is all I’m saying.” Now they call me Big Mama. “Don’t mess with Big Mama!”
What do you hope the fans get from this convention experience?
I hope their interactions are positive enough for them, and they’re able to say the things they had wanted to say for a really long time. I know a lot of people travel with family and friends. I just hope it’s a really fun, good, positive weekend for them.
Tickets to “Salute to Smallville” are still available! Get your photo opps, autographs, and event tickets HERE! Big thanks to Erica Durance for taking the time to talk to us.

I swear if this is an april fools joke, I’m going to cry like a baby. I didn’t miss an episode of Smallville in the whole 10 seasons. In fact I went from age 14 to 24 watching it. The fact that Welling will not reprise his role because he doesn’t want to wear tights… Why did he audition for a Superman character if he wasn’t willing to wear a suit and cape? Can’t they make something that isn’t tights? haha
Larry
April 1, 2013 at 6:08 pm
Tom said that he wouldn’t wear the tights either after meeting Christopher Reever or when Christopher Reeve died, one of the two. But as mr Reeve gave him his blessing while alive I think he should And it wont be a smallville continuation without him in the lead role tho.

I would love to believe that, however being that it is April 1st…. that said, if it were true, it would definitely lose something if it didn’t have Tom Welling. Fortunately since it is April 1st, that won’t be a concern. :)

If Tom Welling doesn’t want to be a part of these new episodes and the role of Clark Kent/Superman, they should see if Brandon Routh would like to fill the roll, its not that Tom Welling won’t wear tights he probably just wants more money.

even if this is a joke (nice one by the way) fooled me for a sec. the idea is out their i think this could make alot of money for them if they really pulled this off. the man of steel movie that will be released soon will be a whole different approach of superman itself honestly smallville 10 seasons in my mind was better then lois and clark adventuers and the superman returns movie while back. if they could approach these episodes, tom welling would have to be superman hands down if it had to be some one it should only be him and know one else, to make this happen if not dont attempt it for sure, hell add muscle detail to the tights to make it look cool if thats what tom is worried about. but yeah lets make this happen who agrees with me!!! anyone

I’ve been waiting for this news story since this morning :P
Anyone up for creating a real kick-starter for this? DO IT!!!
Craig Byrne
April 1, 2013 at 7:59 pm
A kickstarter campaign for a Smallville movie would be ultimately fruitless. Warner Bros. has their Man Of Steel movie they want to promote, but beyond that, believe me, if the studio and the actors wanted to do more Smallville, it would happen, because the show was and would continue to be very profitable. They don’t need to leech after fans’ money to make it happen.
Cindy
April 1, 2013 at 7:48 pm
I hope Tom changes his mind because i think its going to be hard for the fans to watch season 11 and see a different clark kent. Why not let him just wear some red skinny jeans and a red superman t shirt. They dont have to follow the exact costume.
Deni
April 1, 2013 at 7:51 pm
I hope this is not a joke. It would be amazing to see the cast back. And another thing: PLEASE, TOM, COME BACK! Clark Kent wouldn’t be the same. After Christopher Reeve, Tom Welling is the best Clark Kent I’ve ever seen :)

no tom welling means no true smallville tom welling is the only true clark kent of this generation
Craig Byrne
April 1, 2013 at 8:39 pm
Manny – there have been many “true Clark Kents” of this generation. Tom, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, Gerard Christopher, John Haymes-Newton… if animated stuff counts people like Tim Daly, George Newbern and Matt Bomer would count too.
Thomas
April 2, 2013 at 2:29 am
Henry Cavill hasn’t actually been a Superman yet. We haven’t seen all of the new Man Of Steel flick, so until then, he can’t count as someone who is favored, not all the way.
But I am one of those guys who prefers Tom over all mentioned.
James
April 2, 2013 at 3:24 pm
Well as much as I loved Smallville, Tom was not nearly the best Superman. I would have to hand it over to George Reeve with Christopher Reeves as a close second. (And no I don’t consider any voice actors as a superman. anyone can stand at a mic and talk as any character. It takes body language from a real person to make the character “real”)

April 1, 2013 at 11:37 pm
I want this to be real (although the season 11 comics are doing a good job at giving me my Smallville fix) but the fact Tom would come back to direct but not come back as Superman when damn near everyone else is coming back seems shady. Also having Justin come back as someone else seems weird because everyone’s just going to see him as the Green Arrow. Also the fact they’re making this due to Arrow’s success when Arrow was created due to Smallville’s success seems strange. So I’m saying it’s an April fools joke but hope like hell it’s real and Tom comes back as the man of steel.

April 2, 2013 at 12:05 am
I’ll believe this, if there are future news/rumors after today. IF this is true, there’s a good chance it might fail. Smallville didn’t end the way I hoped it would and felt rushed, but it was alright and should be left alone. It pretty much centered on the story of how Clark grew into Superman and in my opinion, anything dealing with Superman should only be continued on the big screen or animated films/shows. A television series requires too much, while a film or film trilogy can center on one plot per film. As for an animated show, they have much more freedom and can bring more to the table. Although, if it’s done right, it can be a major success. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if this is just an April fools joke or reality.

Only children take part in April Fool’s Day.
I only saw this because it was in my Facebook newsfeed. While I wasn’t extremely excited like some, the fact that it is a joke really lowers Kryptonsite’s future credibility in my opinion. I have a sense of humor, but not for fake news stories that could possibly be true (news stories containing obvious fiction, such as flying pigs or other extreme examples, can be funny).
Craig Byrne
April 2, 2013 at 2:50 am
It really lowers KryptonSite’s future credibility, Jen? Honestly?
The site has been doing April Fool’s since before Smallville even premiered. I later wrote the companion books for four seasons of the show. If KryptonSite was not considered a “credible” source, then I would have never had that privilege to write them.
I take pride in that, for 364 days a year, with maybe a random hiccup if I get or myself believe some false info, or if a spoiler had changed, KryptonSite had always been accurate. But for that one other day… let me have some fun. Last year, I mostly skipped April Fool’s, and I was getting questions of “why didn’t you?”
Don’t think I’ll change your mind on that, but no, I am not concerned about credibility issues because 95% of anyone who has ever gone to KryptonSite knows that if it’s April 1st, there is something that’s not right going on.
Craig Byrne
April 2, 2013 at 2:54 am
Also, the “children” comment is quite offensive and clearly from someone who needs to go out and have some fun. :) Take a joke! Especially since, uh, Smallville coming back for more episodes IS obvious fiction, when Warner Bros. has their own Superman franchise they want to take off… aside from Noel Neill returning as Lois Lane in the Adventures of Superman, it has never happened where an old version of the franchise has been “brought back.” Kirk Alyn led to George Reeves, and later Christopher Reeve, then Dean Cain, and Tom Welling. We can’t really count Brandon Routh either since he was in the middle of when the Welling era was going on, but the nature of projects like these is to move on and have fun.
I have no doubt that we’ll, say, see Erica Durance in a Superman related project someday. But for this story to actually happen would be something along the lines of pigs flying, yes, so I don’t really agree with or understand your logic.
Peter
April 2, 2013 at 1:22 am
So I only read the first paragraph and it does suck that it is obviously an April fools… Also note that
“that to maintain a connection between the show and the movie series’ continuity, feature writer David S. Goyer will be writing the first episode back.”
But they decide to give him his red underwear(overwear) again?

I don’t agree with this. Smallville had a good run. Poor Tom was tethered to that show for 10 years, I’m not surprised he doesn’t want to revamp the character. I loved Smallville, but they ran it far too long for my liking.

Without Tom welling they shouldn’t even do this! He is the only one who should be playing that part if this is true. Kat
April 2, 2013 at 4:48 am
wow..some of you guys are so gullible! even i know this was a JOKE! If anything…Tom said a Smallville movie can possibly happen, but that’s it..and that was like 2 years ago. I’m pretty sure he’s way more into directing/producing and doing different roles now. For 10 years he’s been known as Smallville Clark Kent/Red Blue Blur/The Blur/future Superman. Give the guy a BREAK. As well as the other actors/actresses in Smallville. As appreciative as they are all for getting to play such iconic and unique roles…they all need to move on..and we as Smallville fans need to move on. There’s still the Smallville Season 11 comics..and hey..if anything..I’ll take Tom in that offer for a Smallville movie..TV MOVIE..or whatever. Heck if they even think about bringing back a Superman series on tv..it would be awesome to have Tom make an appearance just like Christopher Reeve’s did in Smallville. How about Superboy? So the old characters can all make appearances? that makes sense to me. But nothing full blown like a comeback season. Smallville is over guys..as much as we love it.
Craig Byrne
April 2, 2013 at 4:50 am
Kat, agreed. I could see another Superman show someday, where Tom and Erica and who knows who else might guest star… but I don’t think Smallville the series will be back in televised form.

Tom…I am the biggest Superman fan and I loved the Smallville series. The fans would like you to be back as Superman, not direct, not do anything else than be the Man of Steel. It wouldn’t be Smallville without you!!! And if this is a joke, this was a sick April Fools’ Joke.

Worst April Fools ever. Like I’m not even interested in Smallville without Tom Welling. Tom Welling IS Smallville.

I hope so I named all my kids after Smallville Clark, Chloe, and Oliver. However; sad to see no Tom Welling, and all his sexiness :(

If this is to happen it need Tom to come back as Superman A.K.A. Clark Kent. It is the best way to go.

This better not be a joke and I swear if Tom Welling does not pick up where he left off I’m going to be very upset. Smallville has been my favorite show since I started watching it at 15 years old. I have never missed an episode and own every season. I am no some crazy fan, well maybe a little, I’d do anything to meet the cast.
10 years of an amazing show can not just be picked up with a different Superman. I was also highly disappointed with the casting for the new Superman movie. Smallville ended perfectly to transition into a movie.
I really hope it isn’t over Tom not willing to wear tights. Because we need a new superman. We can’t have 3. Christopher Reeves himself appeared in Smallville as Dr. Swan. If he would have someone take his place as the new legend it would and shower be Tom Welling.
Superman Returns I have to say I was very upset with. The actor doesn’t even look like a superman let alone a super hero. I do feel that the new movie coming out this summer will be much better due to the content of the whole Origin of Superman as they have been doing with other superhero movies lately. I still wish Tom Welling was cast in that as well.
So Tom don’t disappoint your fans of 10+ years. Get in those tights and save us <3

For Shame
For Shame
IT IS WRITTEN “THO SHALT NOT LIE”
I was not allowed to watch the show till it was in its like 8th season. but i caught up in only 3 months.
How could you make this joke to millions of loyal fans. What would the cast say about? you know what i am calling them out? For those of the cast who see this, I want to hear your reactions.
