Don’t Believe Cancellation Rumors: The CW Is “Thrilled” With Supergirl

Recently an article has surfaced online from a website that has frequently made up stories for the sake of traffic, alleging that Supergirl is on its way out sometime next year, to be replaced by a Superman series.

The reasoning for this “rumor” is that The CW is unhappy with the show’s ratings (actually, Supergirl has performed well for The CW on an untested new night of programming, and it is still one of the network’s better performers), that the network wants to get to the “next generation” of CW DC shows (true), and that they want to replace Supergirl with a Superman show (which might be a not so good and rather sexist look).

The show is already renewed for Season 5, so the “rumor” seems to be the show ending either with the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover or at the end of the season.

It should be pointed out that just a few weeks ago, CW President Mark Pedowitz talked about the series’ success at the Television Critics Association press tour.

“I’m thrilled with it,” he said. “We are collectively thrilled with it. I don’t know how to say it in a way that makes any sense. This is a show that works. Melissa’s performance is outstanding. She has a great ensemble cast around her. The writing works. They’re willing to take on topical issues. They’re not afraid to do it as entertainment. So they deserve a lot of credit, and we support them.”

Another consideration, at least to fight the “ending with Crisis” part of the rumor, is that Supergirl will need something like 13 episodes for Season 5 to get to the magic number of 100. If the show were to, say, end at 96, that’s not happening. There’s also the possibility that Supergirl would be paired with Batwoman on The CW schedule next year… if that one-two punch does well for the network, they’re not going to end it.

So… don’t worry [yet]. While it’s true that Supergirl could end in 2020, it is highly doubtful that such considerations are already being made, unless there’s a magic factor that we don’t know. For now, though, people are just making stuff up because they know is gets traffic, and no, we are not linking to that nonsense.
