Old Headlines
Planet Krypton and KryptonSite have been following the development of Smallville since the original announcements of a "teenage Clark Kent project" in September 2000. KryptonSite was the first-ever site devoted to Smallville, and with constant updates, it just hasn't been possible to keep everything on the main page.

Here are some of the headlines from November 16-30, 2001....

"I just want to go through high school without being a total loser"And The "Most Likely To Grow Up To Play A Super-Hero Award" Goes To...
(11/30) A recent visit to an online auction site brought a surprise to some fans, as one auctioneer was selling off the 1995 Okemos High School yearbook. Why should that matter? Well, one of the students in that graduating class was none other than a "Thomas J. Welling." We have no idea what the "J" stands for, but if you look to your right, you can find a picture of a then-18-year-old, pre-model, pre-"Clark Kent" Tom.

Thanks to those on the message boards and via e-mail who brought this to our attention (especially H20Girl, who first mentioned it on the boards!).

"Craving" Ratings
(11/29) Fox's 24 rose a very little bit, but still didn't do too much better in the overnight ratings last night up against Smallville.

24 took a 5.9/9 vs. Smallville's 5.9/8. (Whatever that final number means). Both series showed a rise over last week. Roswell, of course, remains at dead last. (Whatever happened to the fall of Smallville and the rise of Roswell, Ronald D. Moore?)

Tuesday night's episode gave Smallville its best ratings since its debut in the demographics of Households, Men 12-34, Adults 18-34, Men 18-34, Adults 18-49, and Men 18-49. It also captured its best ratings for the season among Persons 12-34, Females 12-34, Teens, and Female Teens.

The Music List You Were "Craving..."
(11/28) Wondering about the music on Tuesday night's Smallville? Here's a list of the music heard in "Craving"...

"Slide" by Dido -- This is heard when Jodi first weighs herself, looks into the mirror, and begins to shrink, at the beginning of the episode. Ironically Dido gained popularity by singing the theme song to one of Smallville's competitors.
"Innocent" by Fuel -- When Clark looks through the telescope and sees Whitney and Lana on Lana's steps, this is the music that is playing.
"Invisible" by Third Eye Blind
"The Fool" by Call and Response
"Hero" by Enrique Iglesias
-- This is playing at the very end of the episode.

You can read about the music from past episodes of Smallville by visiting the Smallville Music page. While there feel free to order the CD's and help support KryptonSite as well as the artists whose music was on the show!

RUMOR: Future Magazine Appearances For Kristin Kreuk?
(11/23) Kristin Kreuk (Lana) might be making several appearances soon at a newsstand near you.

Besides the Dec. 8 issue of TV Guide, we are hearing rumors that Kristin will soon be making cover appearances on YM and Rolling Stone magazines. She might also soon be featured in People magazine.

We'll let you know if/when we hear more.

Kristin Kreuk: New Neutrogena Girl?
(11/22) The Edgemont Online newsletter reveals that Kristin Kreuk (Lana) has signed on with Neutrogena to appear in their "New Faces" campaign. Past Neutrogena "New Faces" include Mandy Moore, Brandy, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Edgemont is, of course, the other TV series that Kristin stars in, that will be returning soon to the ABC Family Channel. Kristin will be doing both Edgemont and Smallville at the same time this Fall.

Lex Luthor's Girlfriend Revealed In USA Today
(11/20) USA Today recently did a feature on Kelly Brook, the young actress who will be playing "Victoria Emerson," daughter of a business rival of Lionel Luthor and former (and perhaps current) paramour of Lex.

"I keep joking I'm going to be the Joan Collins of Smallville. But it's not like that; I want her to kind of be a likable villain," Brook says of "Victoria." [For those of you who may be too young to remember, Joan Collins played "Alexis," evil ex-wife of Blake Carrington, on the 1980s nighttime soap Dynasty]

"Victoria Emerson" will be a recurring character for several episodes; starting with "Rogue" (in late December or early January) and continuing through episodes like "Shimmer" (which was added to the Spoilers page earlier this week).

Thanks to EmotionalHermit for the lead. You can read USA Today's complete article by clicking here.

Upcoming Smallville Episode "Shimmers"
(11/19) KryptonSite has learned some information about what will most likely be episode #10 of Smallville. The episode is titled "Shimmer," and it will likely air in early January.

For spoilers about the episode you can visit the KryptonSite spoilers page.

The Music of "Hourglass"
(11/21) Wondering about the music in Tuesday night's Smallville? Wonder no more... here's a list:

"5/4" by Gorillaz -- This is the second time the Gorillaz have been heard in Smallville (the first time being in "Hothead")
"Time Served" by Dispatch
Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, op. 59, and Piano Sonata No. 1 in C minor, op. 4 by Fryderyk Chopin, performed by Idil Beret

Smallville Websites Featured In TV Guide
(11/19) KryptonSite was one of three Smallville-related web sites to be featured in this week's issue of TV Guide magazine.

The magazine's "Web Guide" page by Rich Sands covered KryptonSite ("an unofficial destination that features detailed show summaries, message boards and a spoiler section with tips about future episodes"), the Superman Homepage ("which has an index of comic books, links to other Super sites and comprehensive guides to various TV versions of Big Blue"), and the WB's very own "clever mock newspaper," the Smallville Ledger. It also features screencaptures from all three sites, including this one!

This week's TV Guide should be on newsstands now. Look for the cover that you can see to the right.

"Hourglass" Ratings: Smallville Rises To Beat UPN And Possibly Fox
(11/21) Fox's 24 might not be faring too well against the young Man of Steel. Ratings for the much-hyped series didn't improve at all over last week; and according to last night's overnight ratings the numbers for 24 tied the overnights for Smallville.

Final numbers could change with one show doing better than another, but again, this is surely good news for the WB. Also good news for the WB is that UPN's Roswell remains at the bottom of the list.

Laura Potter Lang's Speech At The Smallville Torch
(11/21) You might remember in episode #4 of Smallville ("X-Ray") that Lana found her mother's journal, and learned that she had given the valedictorian speech in 1977 -- but it was so contraversial the Smallville Torch never printed Lana's mother's words.

Twenty-four years later, it seems that Chloe is resolving that problem -- today's new edition of the Smallville Torch features Laura Potter's complete speech. Inside fans can learn a little bit more about Laura Potter, and how she really is a bit like her daughter Lana Lang. Here's an excerpt:

"I put on my cheerleading uniform and my pom-pom smile, and when the going got rough, I recessed into a book. That's probably what got me here in front of you today. But I'd happily give it all back if I could. I'd trade in the pom-poms and the straight A's and the college acceptance for just one thing: the chance to stand up for what was right. So you see, you should be ashamed of yourselves, but no one is more ashamed than I."

It also looks like there are some more hints regarding future episodes if you read the articles at the Torch and its sister site, the Smallville Ledger carefully. (For example: Read the article about health problems at LuthorCorp on the main page at the Ledger, and then visit the KryptonSite Spoilers page and read what we have to say about "Jitters.")

Special thanks to Keith for the lead.

Oops!: Roswell Fans Treated To Smallville Theme Song
(11/19, Source: Sci Fi Wire) Fans of UPN's series (and Smallville competitor) Roswell were treated to an unwanted surprise this past weekend at a party held for fans of the show at the Paramount lot.

UPN arranged for the band Remy Zero to provide entertainment. So, the group first played their current most popular song, "Save Me." This would have gone over well except for the fact that "Save Me" is the theme song of Smallville, which every week seems to be trampling over Roswell in the ratings.

It is thought that Remy Zero was unaware of their faux pas.

Smallville Comics License Pursued By... Marvel?!?!
(11/22) Joe Quesada, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, recently talked to the Comics Newsarama website and talked about one licensing opportunity that Marvel pursued but was unable to get:

“I can tell you that after I saw the trailer at the Vegas Retailer Summit, I knew it was going to be a hit,” Quesada told Newsarama. “We love the show and felt that it was a missed opportunity by ‘AOL Comics’ not to have a comic out. We could have made Smallville a top 10 book! We had a whole creative team in mind to do the book. Imagine getting Jeph Loeb and Mike Wieringo! I'm sure they would have done it in a heart beat!”

The article goes on to explain that at the time, Quesada's contacts told him DC wasn't looking to do it, so he figured, “let's take a shot”. A few weeks ago calls were placed to Warner Bros. about acquiring the license, and according to the Editor-in-Chief, after several attempts Warner responded and informed Marvel they couldn't give them the license, that DC had exclusive rights to all their properties in comic book format.

You can read the entire Newsarama article, including the rest of Marvel Comics' plans for 2002, by visiting the site.

As for DC Comics' plans for a Smallville comic book series, despite reports at other sites, we are hearing of no current plans for a Smallville comic (even though one would be a no-brainer and give DC a chance for their own "Ultimate Superman!"). However, there will be a Smallville comic-format story in the Dec. 8 TV Guide, drawn by Terry and Rachel Dodson. If we hear otherwise that a Smallville comic is indeed on the way, you'll be the first to know.

Smallville Hits Entertainment Weekly Cover As One Of The "Best of the Fresh"
(11/17) Smallville has been named one of the "best of the fresh" new shows of the fall season, and that the show made the cover of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly which you can now find on newsstands everywhere.

The cover (which you can find at the right) features Tom Welling, in a shot very similiar if not identical to the image used in the EW Fall Preview issue.

The EW article also revealed some very interesting tidbits (be warned, some SPOILERS may follow):

- A dream sequence in the Nov. 20 episode will offer peeks at Clark's and Lex's futures (hint: Michael Rosenbaum was recently spotted filming on the West Wing set)

- Lex will be getting a girlfriend and developing a kryptonite-centric business
- A certain future Dark Knight may pay a visit sometime soon

You can read an excerpt from the EW by clicking here. Special thanks to EmotionalHermit for the cover image.
