Nam-Ek & Aethyr: The Comics Connection
As soon as the new spoilers for the Season 5 premiere surfaced (and you've read them, right?), people started wondering who the heck "Nam-Ek" and "Aethyr" were in the Superman comics legend.

When seeing the name "Nam-Ek" many made a connection to a character from Dragonball Z, and that name similarity popped up many times in the KryptonSite Forum.

Believe it or not... both characters did exist in the pre-Crisis Superman continuity, in the Phantom Zone.

Let's start with Nam-Ek. Steelcaves.com describes Nam-Ek as "a Kryptonian scientist and healer who made an illegal 'Healing Ray' from the horn of the Rondor, an endangered animal of pre-cataclysmic Krypton. Overexposure to the explosive radiation of that ray transformed him into a Rondor-Kryptonian hybrid beast."

"Hyde" found this link and posted it on the K-Site Forum. It's a comic book page featuring the character:

Nam-Ek eventually made his way into the Phantom Zone, shortly before the Crisis on Infinite Earths that changed DC Comics continuity forever.

"Babaojay" has done some research of her own. Here's what she can tell us about Aethyr: "I just did some research into Aethyr..basically, Aeythr isn't a character, per se...it's the embodiment of the Phantom Zone. The best I can glean is that it is the result of two galaxies that collided and were destroyed, and Aethyr is the collective melding of all the souls that were lost. It basically consists of a multi-dimensional universe that will beharnessed by Kryptonians (and Jor-El) to form the Phantom Zone.

"It sounds like Smallville's Aethyr is in control of The Projector...the thing that allowed them to send prisoners to the Phantom Zone. A twist on the comics, but still basically the "gateway" to the Phantom Zone."

Aethyr was also referred to as "The Oversoul."

It sounds like these two Kryptonians mostly just share the names but obviously not the characteristics (i.e. no horns or magical beings here). It will be interesting to see how this pans out....
