Superman & Lois: Erik Valdez on Playing New Character Kyle Cushing

Kyle Cushing is a new character created for Superman & Lois, and we have not yet seen much of him in the show’s promotional materials. He does, however, play a major role in the series, as father to Sarah, husband to Lana Lang, and possible thorn in Lois Lane’s side. Playing the role of Kyle is Erik Valdez of Graceland fame.

At a recent press tour Q&A for Superman & Lois, Erik Valdez noted that there isn’t pressure in the sense of playing an iconic character such as Tyler Hoechlin’s role of Superman, but creating a new character like this is also an undertaking.

“From my perspective, there’s a bit of a responsibility as well, because you’re bringing this new character to life, into this world that these fans have been a part of for literally almost a hundred years now. There’s an authenticity that has to come from this character to really integrate well within the storyline,” he said.

Erik Valdez praises the Superman & Lois writers for how Kyle has come together. “Todd [Helbing] and everybody in the writers room have done a really good job providing me with some of this stuff and helping me bring it to life. One of the greatest things [about the show] is the collaboration. I’ve not worked on a show where it’s been so openly collaborative. We can have conversations with our writers and with Todd and with Lee [Toland Kreiger, director] about these characters and what works with certain scenes and certain elements. The open dialogue makes it so much more gratifying when we actually get to see what we put into it.”

Superman & Lois premieres Tuesday, February 23 on The CW… we are almost there!
