Smallville’s Erica Durance Joins Supergirl In Major Recasting

Another of this generation’s most prominent Lois Lane actresses is coming to Supergirl in Season 3.

In a bit of recasting, Erica Durance, who portrayed Lois Lane in seven seasons of The WB/CW series Smallville, is coming to Supergirl as Kara’s mother, Alura. She replaces Laura Benanti who is sadly no longer available.

“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in New York,” Smallville Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement. “But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”

After Smallville, Erica starred in the television series Saving Hope for several years. She also played a woman who thought she was Wonder Woman in a memorable episode of David E. Kelley’s Harry’s Law series.

Durance is repped by Jeff Palffy from PMG Management and Neil Meyer of Meyer Downs.

  • THANK GOD FOR THIS NEWS. ERICA WILL BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE SUPERGIRL SERIES. SHE IS A GREAT ACTRESS AND HER ADDITION IS WHAT THE SHOW NEEDS. POST THIS TOO ALL THE SMALLVILLE FANS . SHE IS LOVED BY MANY AND ME INCLUDED.. YOU ALL DID GREAT IN DOING THIS.. THANK YOU C. SANDOVAL

  • Sigh. This is awful news. What a let down from Laua. I loved Kara's scenes with her mother and now I'm not sure I'll even be able to stomach watching them. Crossing my fingers that ED got better during her years on Saving Hope since nothing from her time on Smallville brings me confidence.
