Michael
Rosenbaum At The Creation Con: Details!
Special thanks to: Wendi
Smallville's
favorite sexy bald man, Michael Rosenbaum, recently appeared
at Creation Con's Grand Slam Summit in Pasadena, California.
The appearance lasted for most of the afternoon and included
photo ops for fans as well as an autograph session. The highlight
of the day for most fans was the nearly hour long open forum,
when Michael gave his fans a chance to ask him questions about
his career and work on Smallville. Throughout the panel,
he discussed his work on recent feature films, his current foray
into writing scripts with his friend Chris, and possible upcoming
plans to do a film with Dax Shepard of "Punk'd" fame.
"You have to create and my mind's always moving."
Stating his desire to do more comedic roles in the future, Rosenbaum
expressed surprise that he had found his biggest success so
far in a dramatic role. "I want to do it all, I think,
but I have more fun with comedy. How I fell into this serious
character, I don't know. My friends all laughed at me. It's
like, you're playing this serious guy on television, now. It
doesn't make any sense."
Rosenbaum
spoke about several of his cast members during the forum, starting
with co-star John Glover, claiming that it was a treat to work
with him and that every day was like taking an acting class.
He told the audience about intense scene readings that always
end in a hug, followed by laughter. "Both of us, have such
a great rapport and we sit there and we laugh, over and over."
As for co-star John Schneider, Rosenbaum assured the crowd that
Schneider was "Cooler than you even think," telling
the story of Schneider taking him on a ride down the 101 freeway
in the General Lee, following a visit to Schneider's ranch.
At Rosenbaum's request, Schneider even used the famous Dixie
horn that was the car's trademark during the heyday of the Dukes
of Hazzard. "It was awesome," Rosenbaum declared,
still apparently a fan boy beneath his own growing fame. When
discussing co-star Tom Welling, the very real friendship between
the two was apparent. "On the set, when I make a joke,
he's the first one laughing," Rosenbaum revealed. "We're
really friends and we help each other out. It's funny, I
never thought he'd help me out as much as he does." Welling
gives Rosenbaum immediate feedback on line delivery during scenes
together, and that the two have ongoing games to try to make
each other break out of character during close-ups. Rosenbaum
insists that to keep things fresh and fun after three years,
you have to create a great atmosphere on set that keeps your
cast and crew laughing.
Several
fans asked about his work in various episodes, and Rosenbaum
was quick to point out "Shattered" and "Asylum"
as his two favorite episodes of the show, admitting that "Shattered"
was the first time he ever really had to challenge himself after
three years of playing Lex Luthor. "Everything came together.
The writing, the directing, the music, everything came together
on those shows. And it brought back some of the other characters
and the villains, so it was kind of fun for the fans."
The actor went into some detail about his work on "Shattered",
explaining that because they don't shoot an episode in chronological
order, that they wound up shooting some of the last scenes of
the episode at the beginning of the shoot. To help himself remember
details of how advanced Lex's psychosis should be at any given
point in the episode, he created a time chart for himself as
a reminder of what emotions to project during scenes. "It
was chilling. I didn't sleep a lot. I really went home at night
and stayed up late and came into work with these big bags under
my eyes and looked like hell. I really went the whole nine yards."
Other favorite episodes mentioned were "Rogue" and
"Hourglass".
The subject
of Lex and Lana possibly becoming a couple was brought up during
the session as well, but Rosenbaum pointed out how unlikely
the relationship was, by comparing Lana to the Olsen twins.
"She's very young," he reminded the audience.
Given the age difference, he didn't think we would see anything
like that in the near future, but when pressed on the matter,
Rosenbaum admitted that personally, he wouldn't mind a romance
between the two. "Will it happen? Who knows? There's definitely
some nice moments between our characters." When someone
inquired as to what Rosenbaum might do if Lex's character development
were left up to him, more than a little of the actor's personal
tastes came through in the answer. "I want him to be more
of a player. I want Lex to pick up the ladies, I want him to
go out and gamble. I want him to have a casino at his house
on Friday nights. I want him to go a little wild. I want to
go back to Club Zero. It's like man, have some fun! You're a
billionaire, you know?"
The struggle
of Lex against his demons was discussed at various points during
the forum and Rosenbaum continues to infuse the character with
ambiguity during Lex's development. "You know, just when
you think he's getting evil, he's fighting it. He's fighting
it constantly. I kind of like where it's going. And some of
my ideas reflect what I think they're doing as the show goes
on." He elaborated further, speaking for Lex as he explained,
"I'm trying. I love that Clark guy, he's a good kid, you
know? But things happen for a reason. The relationship, unfortunately,
is built on lies and deception, but they're trying to protect
each other." When one fan said he was ready for Lex's turn
to darkness, Rosenbaum expressed some surprise. "You want
me to turn evil? Well. . ." He paused for a moment, then
smiled like a true Luthor. "Stay tuned."
