V (The Visitors) - The Original KryptonSite Thread

I thought that was the best sci-fi miniseries to hit television since the 80's. I read a while ago that the creator was trying to bring it back with the original cast members, sort of like a 20 years later thing, and they were going to disregard "The Final Battle" and the series following after as if that didn't happen.

I was wondering if anyone had any more info on it.

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember it. It was a good series, they just released it on DVD awhile ago.

I loved that mini-series. Most video stores have both the original mini-series episode, and the final battle episode on dvd.

I remember it. It ROCKED! Our whole household would gather round the TV for "V" when it was time.

V the miniseries and series

Anyone interested in discussing V?
I loved the 2 mini series and tried to like the series which had Michael Ironside in it as Ham Tyler.

Recently purchased all the DVDs available for it and in checking the web for info on the stars found out that discussions are in progress for a return of V to TV. Kenneth Johnson wanted to do a 'next generation' of V and had written a script for it, but TPTB at NBC want him to repeat the original idea as an update instead. The original was so good I find it hard to believe a remake could have the impact of the original, even with the improvements in special effects. What do you think?

Did anyone feel reminded of Diana eating the guinea pig in the Smallville episode Craving with Jody?

Didn't see another thread for V so thought it deserved one? Thoughts anyone?

Chesay, you're right, Craving did remind me of Diana eating the guinea pig! I liked the V series! But it's been a while since I've seen it. Ha ha! I forgot that Lois' dad was in the series. I think it would be great to see another series but I would hate to see it turn out like the new Battlestar Galactica. I don't really like that remake.

I remeber when the miniseries was on tv. It was really big then... a lot of talk about it. Unfortunately I don't remember too much of what happened or who was in it.

Until I got the DVDs available for V, all I remembered was what an impact it made on me. The special effects and makeup for the original miniseries were outstanding for TV at that time.

Michael Ironside really impressed me with his acting talent and I remember thinking I wanted to keep his name in mind should he be in anything else. I've followed his career with interest and was delighted to see him in Smallville even though his part was small. The heartthrob in the subsequent short-lived V TV series was Jeff Yagher, who later played Elvis in Twilight Zone episode, The King. He also was in an episode called the Dead Man (I don't remember the series) where he played a condemned man who was executed but did not die. He was excellent in both of those as well.

Diana eating the guinea pig has never left my memory. Sort of like the shark sequence in Jaws, it was quite a shocker at the time. The special effects look a bit dated now but then it was really something to see. It made a powerful impact because several shows have "borrowed" it-Smallville for one.

If you find it in the library for rental (usually the libray is a lot cheaper than most rental outlets), I can highly recommend it. The writer Kenneth Johnson based his concept on the WWII resistance effort against the Nazis. It was extremely well done for its time and has held up over the 20 yrs. Hard to believe it has been that long. I particularly enjoyed the commentary on the original miniseries by Kenneth Johnson. He really seemed pleased that anyone would want to see the series on DVD and especially to hear him do commentary on it. He speaks warmly of the series, cast, and goes into much detail on circumstances surrounding the filming and choices he made for the series.

The Star Child was a bit much I thought, although it was interesting. It just didn't fit since neither parent had any special talents except falling in love with the wrong person. She was an alien Mary Sue endowed with a number of incredible abilities that seemed to multiply as needed to advance the story. The rapid aging to get her to adolescence via molting and metamorphosis was innovative at the time. She became the love interest of Kyle (Jeff Yagher).

Lane Smith, who was so wonderful later in Lois and Clark as Perry White, played Kyle's father in the series. The father /son relationship was a tormented one much like that of Lionel and Lex.

Robert Englund was loveable as Willie. He went on to fame and fortune as Freddy Kreuger and did an outstanding job. Certainly he is a versatile acting talent.

All the cast was stellar and that's why I'm not sure a remake of it would be that great. That fact that talks are even in the works about bringing it back show the impact it had on the network at the time. I'd sort of like to see the old gang again and it sounded like Kenneth Johnson had support from many of them to do the Next Generation.

Anyone who likes science fiction would enjoy V even after all this time. You can tell it was one of my all-time favorites. I was so thrilled to find it on DVD because when it first aired I did not have a VCR. Like finding an old lost friend after many years, much like I felt about ST the original series when it finally came out in a three part set. There are so many links to Lois and Clark and Smallville in the cast that it is fun to see how they looked then compared to now, as well as, how their careers have changed. Wish more young people would watch it if they get the chance, even though it won't measure up effects-wise to the fabulous stuff done now.

I did enjoyed V when it first came out back in the 80s.

It was one of those pre "Independence Day" series about alien invasion to Earth.I liked the first episode in which the visitors arrived. What is wrong with this picyure? They looked human!

However I was shocked to see that they were really reptile like creatures who wanted Earth s water....

I wonder why a movie wasnt later done after the series ended....

Someone is stealing the Enterprise!

Yup! The creators of "The 4400" are writing and creating a mini series remake.

I have had the miniseries stuff on VHS and replace the second one with a DVD. Last summer I found the TV series at Costco and just couldn't help but buy it. Besides it was only $20! I was around 10 when this came out on TV and I did watch it. Not sure how my father allowed that. he seems more strict now concerning his grandkids! I 'm like but you let me watch Falcon's Crest when I was barely a teenie bopper for pete's sake!

Hoping the rumours after all these years are actually true! Though I wasn't hoping for a remake. Remaking is becoming a bad trend. My high hopes for Bionic Woman were dashed. I barely made it through the Knight Rider movie. Then thought maybe the tv show would be better. I gave up after episode 3.

ABC is reviving "V" and centering it around a female homeland security agent.

More about this.. I see the original creator Kenneth Johnson isn't returning... I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing... Johnson is quite talented.... but I've seen shows where the original creators were TOO involved (like Dark Shadows) and it's been crap...

Either way, the original V series is on serious discount right now... and the original miniseries is cheap... so I think I'm gonna give 'em a look.

Watching the original miniseries now, I went looking for info on the new version, and saw these comments @ Variety with the new show's creator/producer, Scott Peters:

""Whenever I mention ‘V’ to anybody, they still have a lot of good memories about the original movie and series," Peters said. "Everybody has that imagery of their uniforms, or the visitor eating a hamster. It’s a science fiction icon and too good to pass up."

The original "V" served as an allegory for the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. Peters said he won’t duplicate that concept, except that the new "V" will still focus on what happens when the masses have blind faith in their leaders.

In this case, the new "V" will center on Erica Evans, a Homeland Security agent with an aimless son who’s got problems. When the aliens arrive, her son gloms on to them — causing tension within the family. As in the original "V," several storylines will unfold simultaneously.

But even without the same storyline, the original "V’s" bones will remain: As in the ’80s version, the show will open with an enormous army of spaceships hovering over the world’s major cities. The visitors say they’ve come to help Earth, but their motives are nefarious (in the original, they wanted to steal the world’s water supply)."
