Powers (FX)

The Brian Michael Bendis comic book series is apparently in development to become a TV series on the FX cable channel.

http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/02/06...aft-completed/

"‘Powers’ is in active development as a pilot at FX,” Bendis told MTV. “I just handed in a draft to the network and we’re getting our notes from the network as soon as this thing is over."

This doesn't confirm that it'll happen beyond the script page, but it could be interesting. I admit I've been TERRIBLE about actually reading Powers, and this might be an excuse and a chance to give it a peek. Bendis has done some good comics, the best (for me) being his work on Ultimate Spider-Man. Personally, I always hoped a TV series based on his Marvel/MAX comic book Alias (no relation to Sydney Bristow) would've hit the TV screen. That would've been awesome. As would a Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman series for that matter. Any thoughts?

FX is the entertainment cable network run by FOX. It used to be awesome and full of cool live shows, but now they're best known for some well known dramas like The Shield. Powers would be in good company.

Besides Dirt, every drama or comedy FX has put on their channel has been a success. The Shield, Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Damages, etc. It's really becoming a big contender network with shows now that HBO has lost The Sopranos.

I believe it's about a homicide detective who handles mostly superpower-related cases. He used to be a "Power" himself before no longer having any abilities. This is going off reading parts of the trade paperback last night. I'm looking more into it... the concept seems really cool.

The only bad part of being on FX that I can see (but it's good at the same time) is they'd probably only do a 13-episode season. But, those are usually 13 GOOD episodes.

I read about the comic on wikipedia and if the show stays true to the comic it sounds good though I don't know if it would be popular enough to survive till it got a proper series finale.

sweet holy! I've heard only superlatives about Powers, and on FX, a channel where they can actually push boundaries, it's a golden opportunity

Okay, so I read more of the first trade paperpack, "Who Shot Retro Girl," tonight. I LOVED it. I had it for a while and kept putting off giving it a chance. Now I've got to catch up on some of the other trades.... though I'm wondering if I should get the "definitive" hardcovers instead. Not sure. Either way, I think this would make an excellent TV show.

i had heard that Powers was going to be a TV show but didn't know what station might carrying it (thanks for the info Craig!). I had hoped it would be a cable one as Powers is, um, let's say "adult". It would actually fit more on a channel like HBO but FX will do (Shield proved they weren't above taking risks).

I love Powers (the comic) and think an ongoing show will be great!

I wonder how involved Bendis will be...

I noticed from reading the trade paperback that it's very "adult"... though I don't think all of the language is necessary to get the point across. FX is a good medium. It can be more adult than broadcast TV but it's not HBO either.

Hopefully very. He's a talented guy with a writing style perfect for television. He likes doing serialized stuff but he also is a mater of standalone stories - Ultimate Spider-Man #13 remains one of my favorite comics issues of all time.

I just hope if he or Oeming see PowersTV they don't get pissed about infringement or something. Bendis seems already so involved with the online world he might prefer that his own people are covering it. Though, I can offer the KryptonSite audience to excite them over the project, so hopefully that much, at least, will be good.

Who Killed Retro Girl is "adult" but it gets a lot more explicit in some of the later trades (including one bit that has now become "infamous" in the Powers 'verse). It'll be interesting to see how FX handles it.

I agree that he has a perfect style for TV (or movies, but yeah, more tv I think). I know a couple of his others works were in development for tv or movies as well. (and he consulted on the Spidey movies, of course; and I hear they are bringing him in to consult on the Avengers movie as well.)

And remind me, which was one was USM #13? I'm drawing a blank....

USM #13 was the issue where Mary Jane found out about Peter's secret identity. It was basically an issue full of talking, and it was really, really well done.

What is the really explicit bit from a later trade? PM me if you don't want to spoil it here in the thread. I've ordered the other trades so I can get all caught up, but still, I'd like to know.

Oh yeah, I remember that issue, it was cool.

And sent you that PM about the explicit bit, Craig!

Bendis did an interview with Wizard magazine where he talked about Powers.

I posted highlights at PowersTV:
