Chloe's Character in Relation to Other Media (General Discussion)

I don't know why the title of this thread has suddenly been changed after being posted for 8 months now.
A more accurate title to this thread is:

Symbolic Props Mythology and Legends enhance Chloe's part in Smallville.

--guided by intent or coincidence?
Before you answer jump ahead to this section: COSMIC COINCIDENCES

....

SOME INTERESTING FINDS:

the CLARK MUSEUM in LosAngelas has an exhibition of the literature and art of the Greek mythological couple Daphnis & CHLOE *

There have been many paintings and portrayals of the famous couple.
In some, he is even wearing a red cape.

And interestingly enough, i believe Smallville has this legendary couple displayed on the Talon wall (which has at times been in the form of stained glass) Daphnis in his red cape with his golden haired Chloe. In the episode FRAGILE, the woman's breast bears 7 sparkling diamonds embedded in the glass..

While this story of two foundlings, a girl and a boy, could mean any of the females on the show paired with Clark, I find it interesting that it is CHloe and Clark who are the ones caught playfully making out, intent on "discovering each other's bodies" in RUSH; just like in the story of chloe and daphnis who are displayed in the background.

* Here is a short synopsis:
------------------------------------
the story of Daphnis & Chloe is one of love overcoming all obstacles.
The author of "Daphnis & Chloe" attributes a painting as his inspiration.

Daphnis & CHLOE were separate foundlings who were raised by shepherds, and grow to be best friends and very dependent on one another, nourishing a mutual love which neither suspects.. Their adoptive parents keep secret that they were found with “tokens of noble birth”, but were informed by the gods that their purpose in life was for Daphnis to watch over the goats and Chloe to watch over the sheep.

The story also tells of a rather seemingly benevolent goddess who decides to take Daphnis and help him learn how to express his physical love to Chloe by showing him herself, and also warns him that there will be pain involved for Chloe which further holds him back from doing so.

After thwarting many attempts by evil-doers to destroy or capture them, their families, or their lands, and other obstacles that delayed the confusing feelings they had for one another, they eventually became intent on discovering the physical pleasures of love and finally married after their secret was exposed.

–There were many occasions where Daphnis saved Chloe, but she had saved him as well; there are even references to Chloe pulling a rope ‘from her heart’ to save him, when she removes her breast band and uses it as a rope to pull him out of a pit.

-==========================

thank you alwaysyouclark; for the pic

.... And Thank You Bella882 for this amazing animated gif!
That scene of the car crashing through the stained glass window seems very symbolic to me of how they were breaking thru the barriers, and Smallville was creating it's own new Mythos!

Hmm, interesting. I've always wonder where the writers and the show runners get their inspiration regarding the development of the Clark and Chloe relationship.

Yeah, I'm sure the Daphnis and Chloe painting was completely random.

Other random stuff:
LOHENGRIN
In Apocalypse there is an AU scene of Chloe coming out of the post office with her fiancé. In the back drop of the scene that takes place with just her and Clark we see the brick wall of the post office covered with posters, playbills, etc. There are several large posters. Two of them have a Swan on them and are for Lohengrin, and the other two are for Salome.

Lohengrin - is the hero of the German version of a Medieval tale about a "rescuer" of "mysterious origin" who is sent in a boat pulled by a SWAN .
(coincidence?)

Synopsis:
The son of Percival, he is a knight of the "Holy Grail" whose members are sent out in secret to provide lords to kingdoms that have lost their protectors and Loherangrin is eventually called to this duty.
In the kingdom of Brabant, the duke's daughter, Elsa, fears all will be lost, but Loherangrin, arrives and offers to defend them. In some versions of the story, he has "magical powers" that will be lost if he divulges his real name and origin. They marry, despite his secret, but prodding by an antagonist who spreads rumors that Lohengrin is not of noble blood forces Elsa to find out the truth about her new husband.
In some versions of the story, once he tells her his secret, he must return in the boat pulled by the swan and she is either killed or collapses to her death. In other versions, he and his princess can live happily ever after.

Salome - is a Biblical tale on which several play productions, artwork and opera find their basis. This le-femme-fatale story is about seduction, and the grotesque. it is the story of Herod's stepdaughter who requests the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter as a reward for dancing the Dance of the Seven Veils. (reference to one of the LnC episodes)
The English version of the French play by Oscar Wilde was published with illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. Upon researching Aubrey Beardsley one of his earliest known drawings is that called "Chloe", which depicts a creature who looks like a cupid or wood sprite:

============================
here's a little poem I came across:
Chloe Divine

CHLOE 's a Nymph in flowery groves,
A Nereid in the streams;
Saint-like she in the temple moves,
A woman in my dreams.

Love steals artillery from her eyes,

The Graces point her charms;
Orpheus is rivall'd in her voice,
And Venus in her arms.

Never so happily in one
Did heaven and earth combine:
And yet 'tis flesh and blood alone
That makes her so divine.

~Thomas D'Urfey. 1653–1723

ABOUT "GEORGE"
"George", CHloe's fiance, has to skip out for a sec during that scene, so it gives CHlark a few to have a quick chat, then George in back in a flash. Hmmm.... I wonder what was so important, that he had to leave CHloe outside while he supposedly went back in....

George comes back and we see he is a "protector" (a police officer)
The emblem on his T-shirt is the same shape and size as the "S" symbol for Superman. The American flag waves behind in the background. But I don't think we are ever told his name.

OK. Now some of you are gonna think I'm really STRETCHING it here, but I love to research and find connections between things.

SOME INTERESTING FINDS.
y'all can connect your own dots...... or not.

VULCH : The Wolf-People

(

There are several meanings for the term "VULCH". and one can easily determine some very different intentions and meanings than what I have stated here.

================================================== ==

VULCH - "to take and make use of what has been discarded or left behind"
my interpretation: AlGough "picked up" 70 years of Lois Lane traits including those that had been discarded, and gave them to Chloe Sullivan.

================================================== ==

From "Cosmic Encounter":
http://www.apple.com/games/articles/...ic/index2.html
We learn that "VULCH" has the power to salvage. When any other alien launches or discards an artifact pod, you salvage it to your console.

==================================================

VULCH is also a root of the Romanian word for "the wolf-people" or "wolf tribe", (from the Vlach word for wolf - "vâlc" ) http://www.angelfire.com/realm/vlachs/#VLACHS.
They were "skin-walkers" as Kyla's descendants were, and they were known to have a celebrated category of women whom they decorated/adorned with unique bracelets that designated their status as "hearth women", those who tended to and kept after the perpetual hearth fires.(a precursor to the Olympian TORCH)
(Over the years Chloe's jewelry has been one of her outstanding trademarks, especially her wearing of bracelets)

We have learned that Naman's soulmate depicted in the cave-painting matches the design on Kyla's bracelet:

..

Chloe has been in several scenes where the "bracelet girl" on the cave wall is also shown, but she is the only one, except for Kyla, to be shown standing directly beside it.

In this scene, Lionel Luthor reads Chloe's own words from an article she wrote in the Daily Planet. " 'All decisions have consequences,'" he reads. Then he says to Chloe, "Clark chose to run away from his. Are you gonna run away from yours too?" He leaves her standing there and the camera pans up the cave wall where we see the "Bracelet-girl" on the left, directly overhead of Chloe.

Put that together with the VULCH meaning of "salvaging alien artifacts that have been "launched, discarded", or "left behind", and we might have a strong case for further substantiating the idea that Kyla's bracelet is meant for Chloe, the Vulch Lois Lane.

================================================== =
The term, "VULCH" is also used in online air combat flight simulations; "To vulch" is to shoot down planes that have just lifted off from the runway or are in the process of taking off."

Perhaps AlGough latched onto this definition since their original pitch was for a series about a Young Lois Lane and it was "shot down" before it had a chance to "fly". Thus they renamed her "vulch Lois Lane" and rearranged the letters to make "Chloe Sullivan" and continued on their merry way.

Coincidence? I'm sure. .... But it's Cosmic nonetheless, no?

More info on Cosmic Coincidence coming up.

Wow! Can I just say that I am highly impressed?

Very interesting finds. I especially liked this last one with how you broke down Chloe's name and tied in the Kawatche bracelet and Chlois. Very interesting stuff indeed.

I do have a degree with additional Certifications in several areas of expertise, but English Lit. isn’t one of them. That’s my sister.

Yes, the Internet is my friend. I am a research-aholic, and the Internet saves a lot of time going back and forth to the library or looking up in the encyclopedia! But I never take just one source at face value. I always check out several sources. (using .edu and .org filters brings about the most reliable sources though somewhat limited)

================================================== ===

SMALLVILLE'S BRACELETS

I would like to expand a little further on the bracelets.

It seems that the importance and significance of bracelets is an ongoing theme in Smallville.

Let's see.

There's Kyla's bracelet...., AND the cave painting of said bracelet ("For the true one in your life"), as previously mentioned:

Allicia's bracelet....

the TOMB bracelet.
(Note: both of Chloe's wrists are bandaged also in that episode)

Kara's bracelet's importance is brought up in several episodes. It is even hidden by both Lionel and then by Clark, and Lex tries to get Pete to steal it (HERO).

Dax-Ur's bracelet....

Maxima's Bracelet, which I believe Clark broke, sending her back to her own world.....

Tess still wears the bracelet she made for her best friend....

COMMITTED is another episode with a bracelet, make that 2 bracelets: The one the "psycho-jeweler" wore, and the one Oliver tried to give to Tess.
..

Oh . have to mention the importance of Jonathan's watch (which is a type of bracelet as well), and was the featured item around which the episode Vengeance took place.

In TEMPEST Clark puts a wrist corsage on CHloe....

did i miss any?

I'd like to add that all the girls wear bracelets from time to time, but Chloe's bracelets stand out, with either some unique eye-catching quality, or a focal point of the frame, or obtrusively garish enough so as we don't dare miss them.

And of course Chloe is the one who wears bracelets almost all the time. It's to the point that if she isn't wearing one, we tend to think there is something wrong....

ETA Another special bracelet?

--from LEGION.
During the "techno-exorcism"(Brainiac extraction), Chloe's wedding bracelet is zoomed in upon until it is center of the screen. Whether the bracelet has any significance here, or if it was just an inconsequential prop while we get another close-up of the Legion Ring remains to be seen.

BRACELETS IN THE COMICS

Thanks to Sue Denim for prompting me to go find these scans. I found some great reference links along with some other bonus stuff I thought was interesting.

from "WORLD of KRYPTON"
by Paul Kupperberg, Howard Chaykin, and Murphy Anderson, 1979

from "Superman's Return to Krypton!" - Superman #141, 1960

Another interesting tidbit from the same source:

And this same "old Kryptonian custom" of statues of the parents adorning the wedding has been carried through to comics years later :

Hey all!

Before anyone gets too confused about where the other thread went, I'm going to post this page first and then get onto more Smallville's Cosmic Coincidences, Symbolic Props, etc.

Also, if anyone has other stuff to contribute to this thread, please do so!

================================================== ====

Now here I will again attempt to find a home for my on-going compilation of pictures that compare Chloe to yet another Legendary character, namely Lois Lane.

The Lois Lane character is indeed legendary, and like many legends, her exact appearance, her place in Superman’s world, and her background have remained fluid, ever-changing with the tide of the times, and authors’ whims.

Lois Lane is a character with a deep, rich history within the Superman Legacy. She has gone through numerous changes and worn many hats, but she has been stuck by his side, for better or worse, through thick and thin, even as the enemy and with animosity, fear or indifference, as well as admiration, respect, and affection BUT WITH THE MAIN POINT BEING SHE HAS ALMOST ALWAYS BEEN THERE, HER STORIES HAVE BEEN BROUGHT ALONG FOR THE RIDE RIGHT BESIDE SUPERMAN'S STORIES, AND WE ARE COMPELLED TO FEEL SHE IS ALMOST A PART OF HIM.
Chloe seems to me to be the character to fit closest to that description, in the story known as Smallville. Chloe has been given great depth with a fleshed out back-story that moved along at the same pace as this deepest fleshed out back-story of Superman/Clark Kent ever to be told, in the form of a TV show called Smallville.

Chloe may not ever be dubbed as Lois Lane, but ya know what?.... She is the embodiment of not only every single different Lois Lane to ever come along, but she is even more than that, She has the additional qualities that make her, in my opinion, the most convincing and perfect partner for Superman. She is all the Lois Lanes, fleshed out and enriched with an entire backstory, a depth of soul and commitment, with an additional bonus of longevity and powers, while still remaining very much human.

================================================== =====

....

......

This is from the comics where Lois catches Supes and Lori L. kissing.... then she turns and runs back down the stairs. Look how similar to Chloe catchin Clana kissing.

88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 88

And to be fair, I even searched in vain for similar screen shots I could cap of EDlois and found only 2 or 3 that only sorta came close, while there are numerous ones of Chloe ( i only posted a few)

================================================== =======
Thank You !

I have received lots of appreciative comments for these. And I just wanted to say Thanks to all of you
================================================== =======

(These pictures were previously in, the old Clark and Chloe Relationship thread, and I can no longer access that post in order to add new stuff as it comes along. These comparisons are not considered to be CHlark stuff, nor is it art, so I don't think it really belongs in the Relationship thread anyway, nor does it belong in the ALL THINGS CHLARK THREAD .
On top of that, not everyone who is a Chlark shipper wants to see Chloisy-type stuff. )

In some of those pics Chloe seems to wear similiar clothes to the comic Lois.

They both seem to wear a lot of purple jackets! One of them seems to have Lois and Chloe both wearing brown jackets! And a plaid one too! Lol feels like Im hunting for Waldo!

XD I think I have a new found love for the wardrobe people!
