Ah, Rabid... the episode where Cloisers want to eat Lois and Clark up.
And here's the explanation:
We've now already seen where Lois starts to fall for Clark - I'd like to think Apocalypse, with the awkward punch, though she put up her walls during the later half of S8, thinking that Clark didn't feel likewise. Lois and Oliver are over, and Lois is beginning to realize how much she cares for Clark - how much she appreciates him being around to hang out with, but also just be there for her (Siren) - and yet, she is having a hard time trying to do the same for him, though it's clear she wants to do something for him - and finally offers to take him out to "drown their sorrows", but, more than likely, to just enjoy each other's company. Then S8 pretty much just confirmed those feelings Lois was beginning to have to the audience.
And where Clark FINALLY realizes how much Lois means to him - I'd like to think Doomsday, what with his declaration of death to his humanity. Obviously, several things could have led him to completely distrust humanity and seek exile from those he knew to discover who he was without them, but I get the impression from that scene, and the one where he (as the Blur) chose to share only with Lois his fears of dying and leaving his loved ones behind, that Lois's disappearance is what really sent him over the edge. It took 'til Metallo, I believe, for him to finally start to realize WHAT the connection he has to Lois is (LOVE) - he definitely knows it's there when she returns in Savior, but when we see him worry for her safety, try to physically care for her (by touch) when she's hurt, but yet feels that this isn't yet the right time to reveal his secret to her, and so disappears as the Blur and returns as Clark - not only to keep an eye on her, but also because he clearly enjoys spending every moment he can with her.
Throw these two together in the trenches with both now finally having a strong need for the other, while in a seemingly life or death scenario, and well, we get scenes like the hug in the rain, where they were SO close to kissing, but I think they both may have held back in fear that this was only because they thought it was the end of the world (compare this to Commencement and Vessel
), and also the scene back at the Kent farm, where Clark catches Lois's "friendly" punch and Lois tells Clark to keep up the mystery. They may have not confirmed to each other on their feelings and want to progress romantically with one another, (that comes later in Crossfire and [SPOILER]

"But just so you're clear on one thing..."[/SPOILER]) but their body language certainly suggests that the relationship between them is no longer the same friendship that began back in Lucy.
*sigh* Is there anyway we can make sure we keep getting episodes like these for the rest of our lives? No place to preorder S9 DVDs yet?
