It's a spinoff of doctor who based on the Cardiff (that's in Wales) branch of Torchwood, the organisation seen sporadically throughout Doctor Who. It follows a small team of morally reprehensible retards who try and fight off very small-scale alien threats (caused by the space/time rift mentioned in Boom Town) mainly through sex and killing things.
The Torchwood team consists of:
Captain Jack Harkness: You probably know who he is. Incredibly annoying and a bit of a douche. Lets his team get away with almost anything. Still can't die, annoyingly.
Gwen Cooper: She's supposed to be the "Human" one. On her first day her stupidity leads to the release of a sex monster that kills dozens of people. Nobody ever mentions this again. Has a fiancee, who she cheats on with:
Owen Harper: sex-mad doctor, who uses alien pheromones to date-rape women. Eventually dies, then comes back, then dies again. Starts an affair with Gwen (while alive), having boinked pretty much every woman in Torchwood except for:
Toshiko Sato: The asian one (well, she's Japanese, I think). Quiet bookwormy type, finally gets up the courage to tell Owen she loves him - then he dies. Then she dies. He comes back. Actually quite a good character once you find out a bit of her backstory - but that only happens a few episodes before she dies. Then there's:
Ianto Jones: A personality vacuum that joins torchwood to take care of his half-cyberwoman girlfriend. After she goes crazy and kills people (all his fault - another thing nobody mentions), she's killed by Jack. Ianto then starts having sex with Jack - I think his affection works like the Quickening in Highlander, if you kill someone he loves, his love transfers to you.
What is it? It's utter rubbish, that's what it is.

I agree with the aboved statement, it's an amazing show! I really think you should give it a shot, but please start out with series one, and the very first episode otherwise you'll get lost. It also helps if you have some Doctor Who knowledge since it does tie into Doctor Who a lot.

Excellent show. :)
I love the show myself :) But I think it can be said that if you're not a fan of British shows then you might not like Torchwood, but give it a watch - you might like it :)

Torchwood is spin-off of Doctor in TV terms, but really its a more-or-less secret organisation in Cardiff that defeat or capture aliens that come to Earth. Their Hub is under the millenium fountain in Cardiff, you can even see a terradectal flying around in it in season 1. Its great. An adult Dr Who.

Torchwood is awesome. :p
After reading the one bad review several posts back, all I can say is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course. Even if they are in the minority. Anyone else I've ever turned on to the show, absolutely loves it.

I wouldn't agree that Torchwood is as terrible as someone said it was above, or that it is as amazing as others have said. It has its problems. Particularly in Series 1, when the episodes seemed to include swearing and sex just for the hell of it, or just to make it clear that its not as kid friendly as it's parent show Dr Who. Series 2 was a huge improvement and showed that the shows could be good and the characters could be likeable if given the chance.
So I certainly recommend watching it, but don't be put off by the first series. Also, don't expect to see the same organisation that was featured in the Doctor Who Series 2 Finale 'Army of Ghosts' and 'Doomsday', its completely different.

Yeah, the 3 members of Torchwood seen in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End are part of the team that appears in the Torchwood spin off.
The Torchwood in Series 2 of Doctor Who was a much more evil organisation, capturing the Doctor and his TARDIS, but it was destroyed at the end of that series, and Captain Jack rebuilt it as a force for good.

Torchwood is taking a little break like Doctor Who, a full 13 episode season will be back in 2010, but for now next year they will have either three or four mini movie specials.
