I was watching Toy Story yesterday with my two and a half year old son and noticed that Joss Whedon co-wrote the script. Is that widely known? I've not seen much Buffy or Angel but knowing what I do about the guy and his status, I was still surprised to see him on the credits.
Has he written many other mainstream Hollywood scripts?

He's contributed to many, including Speed, Alien 3, and X-Men, but as I recall, he wasn't credited for most of his work and a lot of it was taken out.

He also wrote the screenplay for Titan A.E. It's animated, but still it's a film. I have seen it to this day.
Also when Buffy and Angel were still on I was surprised to learn that back in the day, Joss had written a few episodes of Roseanne.

Cheers guys! Could always have checked imdb I suppose.......
Roseanne is a good spot, Vergon6! I'd never have guessed that one. By the way, I still haven't checked out Super Friends on youtube - it's on my "to do" list. :)

Also he helped co-write a script for 'Twister' but as far as I know he wasn't created for it.

I was surprised to learn he wrote the Buffy movie - up until then I'd assumed he just took the concept and made it into a TV series

He did, but then he left production, because the producers and directors were going a totally different way then he wanted to go.

I seem to remember how was displeased at the way the director was approaching the movie, making it more hammy than he would have liked or something like that.

yeah, and i also heard a rumour he didn't get on with the actor playing merrick... conflict or interests all the way
but HA to them, he was obviously right... what they couldnt make any success out of, he produced seven seasons of extremely popular cult tv

Now I never knew that. I've never seen the film and (whisper it) I've only seen the first 7 episodes of Buffy. Despite knowing it was a cult classic, I've only just got round to buying the DVDs. I'm really enjoying it, despite everyone saying the best is yet to come! Looking forward to seeing James Marsters!

You are not missing much with the Buffy movie. Basically take the opening teaser for "Thirst" from Smallville and multiple that by 1000 times, and you got the cheese factor of the original Buffy movie.

Whedon is a genius as far as I'm concerned. After falling in love with Buffy and Angel (& then Firefly) I took notice of other films a little more closely... if you pay attention, you KNOW the lines that Whedon wrote - take, for instance, in Speed! - when the police were traveling behind the bus & talking with Jack via radio, Jack was telling the captain that the road wasn't finished, and the captain says "It's finished on the map - it's finished on the g.d. map!"... then he says "You're fired. You're all f'g fired!" - CLASSIC Joss Whedon line. :D
As much as I love Smallville, I've always said what a TOTALLY AWESOME show it would have been if Joss Whedon had been writing it...

Marsters was created by God himself to play SPIKE. Mark my words. ;) (Oh, did I say I was a Spike lover? :D )

He also had major issues with Donald Southerland who insisted on changing lines and giving his own readings. Joss was a script Dr for a while before doing Buffy on tv he would punch up certian scripts like Speed and the first X-Men movie were he wrote the best and worst lines of dialogue in the movie.

As far as I know, Joss has always maintained that the producer(s) and director were not responsible for the farce that the Buffy movie turned into. The only person I've ever heard identified in conjunction with why Joss disowned the movie is Donald Sutherland (as someone else already mentioned).
On-topic, a lot of Joss's work as a script doctor tends to fly 'under the radar' in light of the success he achieved because of his television series, and this includes Toy Story; it's one of those situations that is akin to George Lucas being famous mainly because of the Star Wars films (they're not the only things he's created, but they're what he's most known for).
