Doctor Who wows audiences as Hamlet

LONDON (AFP) — Doctor Who actor David Tennant received almost universal acclaim on Wednesday following his first night performance as Hamlet in the Royal Shaespeare Company production.
The former timelord impressed punters and critics alike with his energetic performance as the eponymous lead in William Shakespeare's tragedy, silencing those who had questioned his suitability for the role.
"This is a Hamlet of quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigour and wild humour: one of the funniest I've ever seen," enthused Guardian critic Michael Billington. "Tennant is an active, athletic, immensely engaging Hamlet," he added.
Former English National Opera director Dr Jonathan Miller had criticised the decision to cast Tennant, disparagingly refering to him as "the man from Doctor Who" and claiming it as indicative of English theatre's "obsession with celebrity."
However, the Scotsman's performance at the Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-Upon Avon on Tuesday dispelled any doubts.
The Times reviewer, Benedict Nightingale, proclaimed: "I have seen bolder Hamlets, but few who kept me so riveted," while The Independent's Paul Taylor praised Tennant for putting on a "thrillingly risky display of barbed levity and flippant sarcasm."
Daily Mail critic Qeuntin Letts was less impressed, saying: "For all the stage door excitement and box office success, this is not the greatest Dane.
"Some parts of the role, particularly the manlier, more noble elements, are underplayed. Mr Tennant is also upstaged by a deliciously subtle turn from Patrick Stewart as the wicked but practical King Claudius."

You know, I studied Hamlet for two years. I'm not quite sure those are the authentic Shakesperian costumes ;)

Very annoyed I couldn't get tickets for this - not so much for Tennant, but for Stewart. I'd love to know what accent DT's using though. Natural could work; but hopefully, like the bacon, it's Danish ;)

Oh, and at least he took his screwdriver:
