Ok, so there are 4 series of the new ongoing show, but Doctor Who has been a series since 1963, running until 1989 when the BBC pulled it from their lineup. The series returned in 2005 with a new Doctor. There has been 10 actors in all who have played the part (in the tv series) and over 200 stores. Now granted the older shows from the 1960's to 89 were lacking good special effects, not the CGI they have now, but the stories were top notch and in many ways better than the news stories. Don't get me wrong, I like the newer shows, because I love Doctor Who, new and old. if you really want to understand Doctor Who you need to embrace the older shows to, but please watch them with the understanding of when they were made and the budget they had to work with (which wasn't much). I have been a Who fan from nearly 25 years and I enjoy it as much now as I then then.
Hope this helps and enjoy

There has been a total of i think 40 seasons, but only 4 of them are new ones.
My favorite episodes are Bad Wolf, New Earth, The Idots Lantern, Smith and Jones, 42, Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords, Voyage of the Damned, Partners in Crime, Planet of the Ood, Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead, Midnight, Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journeys End. Of course i love them all bu these are my faves. If i had to pick one it would New Earth, they really are worth watching they're all brill!

Genesis of the Daleks is probably the most memorable Doctor Who episode of all time, then there are other classics like The Invasion, Spearhead from Space and The Curse of Fenric.
Frankly, although the new series may be action-packed and filled with attractive stars, story-wise it can't hold a candle to the original series.
If you liked the books, check out Big Finish's range of audio adventures - wherever possible they used the actual cast of the TV show and I find those stories to be even better than the TV show
