View Full Version : Plausible Explanation for the Finale

I see that alot of people are disappointed with the series finale. As a viewer since episode 1-1, a fan of Superman for 25 years, and a true Smallville fan- I was let down as well. But not totally. The finale had the feeling that things were being rushed. I started realizing that the writers strike played a major factor into how the Series finale ended up.
Its apparent that they had intended for the series to end with the writers strike original schedule. When they had to go back and suddenly film the extra episodes, it feels as if the Arctic finale was a mish mash of some of the content missing. I have a feeling that they filmed a version of the finale, but changed it once the strike was over.
I believe it would have been better for them to axe one of the new episodes and make a 1.5 hour season finale, focusing more on the Clark and Lex epic struggle. The good news is that its likely that Alison Mack will be back, Justin Hartley may likely be back as Green Arrow, James Marsters has expressed interest in returning as Brainiac( the key to keeping him was allowing him more control over his character), bringing Doomsday and Mercy Graves ( if that is who it is)- Season 8 will be quite promising.
Dont give up on Smallville yet.

I have to say that I disagree about it being a "mish mash of some of the content missing" because some of the scenes in there seemed a bit too long or unnecessary. Did they really have to spend so much time on Jimmy? They could have spent some of that time on the Clark/Lex scene in the Fortress which they hyped up so much.
Also, they waited too long to allow some of these storylines to be answered. They could've had Lex find out that Clark was the traveler in "Quest", so that this episode didn't have to partially focus on Lex finding out before he went to the Fortress. They waited too long and moved some of the storylines very slowly. By doing that, they made it seem like they had to solve some problems from the previous episodes and then also creating cliffhangers (all within the same hour).

The Fortress must've collapsed bec. of structural defects.

While season 8 might be good, for a lot of fans the Clark/Lex dynamic WAS the show. It was the point -the friendship that would turn them into rivals. Without Lex, it just isn't the show anymore. The rest is important and a lot is good, but without THAT element, it's a whole nother world now.
The overabundance of Jimmy -bottom line is, Aaron Ashmore fits the mold of the young man the the CW assume the target group fawns over. I don't have a problem with them writing Olsen into the show, but they did go overboard for a finale that was promoted as the confrontation between Clark and Lex to end all.

Dawn is selling the CW as the network for 12 year old girls. So why the hell are they pushing Jimmy so damn hard? Did the focus group testing show tweens love AA?
Jimmy has been all over the place in the post-strike episodes. I can see pushing ED - she is Lois Lane, and after dating Grant she could use a decent stroy line. But the emphasis on Jimmy is just nuts. Throw in Jimmy Olsen - Pimp Ass Playa, Jimmy Bond and Jim-diana Jones and I feel a need to start drinking.
The adventures of Jimmy Olsen are not going to draw in new viewers next year, and I have not seen that many fans who say they are watching for AA the way folks do for TW, MR, KK, AM and ED. The CW really is nuts.

*agrees 100%* It's like they've started pushing Jimmy all of these new stories after "Hero" aired. First he went undercover and found out about what Lex was planning, then he found out about Patricia Swann's murder, Lionel Luthor's murder, got tons of gadgets and spied on his girlfriend, became Lex Luthor's new ally, researched the Kawatche Caves, and lied to both Lois Lane and Chloe Sullivan to prove his alliegiance to Lex. All within the span of 6 episodes (not counting "Traveler" since he wasn't in it).

There's a target group now??
Someone needs to set them straight. Good grief.
I started watching SV when I was about 15, and I watched it
because I like Superman and good, worthwhile action shows.
If some "target group" is a bunch of screaming 12-year-old girls,
they have absolutely no business watching SV. Could they even understand it?!
Yet one more reason I do not like children. They appearantly mess up
my show by giving minor characters too much screen time.
I don't have a problem with Jimmy or anything, but now that you all mention it,
he did really ruin any awesome Clark and Lex confrontation scenes that could've
been there otherwise.

i have to admit...i try not to be overly critical, especially this yr with the strike..but, man...this finale just didnt have what u thought it was gonna have until maybe the last 6 min
I mean, this was it...Lex finding out about Clark has been building since ep ONE!! and it gets 6 min.??? nothin against those that luv Chimmy, Clois, or any other couple, but i realllly thought this episode was all about the showdown in the fortress...everything else just kinda got in the way.
oh well, so much for a big MR sendoff...:\

I never watch the show because of Jimmy, he was always one of my least favorites of the Superman series. I dont hate his character here but it doesn't do anything for me. Surely as Baum's last episode, and to wrap up a seven year story arch, we could have sacrificed more Jimmy time for more Lex/Clark time? Sigh...

In all honesty(and i am a Lois fan and loved the scene) the Clana tape should have been saved till next season episode 1. That way they wouldn't have to do it by tape and they could gain a couple extra minutes

I have to admit after last week's episode, I thought the show was heading in a more action/scifi based direction with less overall focus on the couples. Now it seems they are just going to continue with the CWish show that has some scifi and heroics in it. The best episodes of the show overall have been the ones that have gone beyond that. Shows like Memoria and Shattered/Asylum.

If Smallville is going to be about Jimmy, perhaps I can tune in and watch 90210 next fall for my Clark content.
I considered the writer's strike concept and it makes a lot of sense. The season took a totally different direction during and after the strike from the way it was going before.
I wanted the Parka scene too! It was going to remind me of when Clark first approached the FOS!!!

Season seven was truly awesome to me before the strike.
