What Happened to Edward?

I totally expected Lex to just shoot him and the nuns right there in the church! That would've been so satanic and an awesome way to show how far Lex has gone to the darkness.

So what do you think happened to Edward? It doesn't seem Lex would keep him alive...or maybe he would, only to torture him for information?
