View Full Version : Doctor Who #4-3 "Planet of the Ood"
Had been giving Randy the chance to start this one, but since he doesn't seem to be around I'll do it anyway!
I actually quite enjoyed this one, more than I did last week's episode. Some good Doctor/Donna interaction, a magnificent guest star in Tim "Blackadder's Percy/Darling" McInnery and a great line in the cryptic "Your song will end soon".
All in all then, a 4/5 for me. And next week's looks mega!

Thanks Dan. I've been busy this whole weekend, & just got around to watching it this evening. I thought it was a really good episode. Good to see the Ood again. It made me laugh when the Doctor was rambling, & Donna went back in the tardis, after her winter coat. She saw the rocketship & said "He's got a Ferrari, & you've got... a box."
The Ood are a really cool creation. The brain in the hands thing was great. Did you see when they turned that dude into an Ood, & that nasty squiggly mess came out of his nose & mouth, and he spit the brain out, and caught it in his hand?! AHH! Crazy!
I can't wait, next week's episode looks awesome.
Did you get to see Jonathan Ross's interview with David & Catherine a few weeks back, when she talked about the Sontaran's? Ha ha ha! She didn't know there were people in the suits. LMAO! Duh...... Earth to Catherine.... :D
Love the avatar Randy... mind if I use it on another site I'm on?

One thing that I noticed was that both this story and "The Fires of Pompeii" were firmly in the spirit of 1970s Doctor Who. Actually, at some points, it was as if Russell T. Davies had said "imagine that you're remaking a lost Robert Holmes story from about 1976". In fact, I wonder if director Graeme Harper had a flashback to directing "Revelation of the Daleks" in 1986, since that story also opens with The Doctor and his companion walking across a snow-covered planet before reaching the complex where the main action takes place. For someone who grew up watching 1970s Doctor Who, it added a warm touch of nostalgia to a highly enjoyable episode.
And a few words in favour of Donna. Firstly, I think the absence of a romantic involvement with The Doctor helps the pleasantly old-fashioned feel of these last two episodes. Secondly, I rather like the fact that the companion is an older woman, and not some "wide-eyed" girl, so The Doctor can't simply assume the superiority of being the "older man". Thirdly, although the comedy element is clearly there, Catherine Tate is proving how good she can be as a "straight" actress. In fact, companionwise, whilst I'm looking forward to Martha's return next week, and wondering how she and Donna will get on, I'm feeling at the moment that I'd rather have more Donna than see Rose return.
Thanks! I don't mind at all, you're welcome to use it if you want. :)
LOL, I didn't want to use it until you said, so I hadn't taken it yet - any chance of mailing it me? dan_emma(at)sky.com

I was all ready to hate her, but she's had some rather enjoyable moments so far.
By the way, welcome to the forums Chuck! :)

That was the 1st episode of this series i think it was called partners in crime.
As for this episode i always like it when the Doctor looks into the darker aspects of humanity and rises above it, the Ood with were superb in this episode as was Tim McInnery the poor man doesn't get nearly enough tv time as he desreves.

Loved Planet of the Ood! Especially Donna's line at the start of the episode: 'You've got a box and he's got a farrari!' Absolute brilliance of writing!
Also the bit where the ood said 'We think your song must end soon.'
again brilliant, but it did freak me out. An overall brilliantly fantastic episode:- 5/5:D:D

I thought this was a beautiful episode. Once again the Doctor/Donna dynamic is delightful. I was glad to see the Ood again and they haven't lost the odd ability to be super creepy and endearing at the same time. I love how immediately Donna was trying to teach them about free will and freedom. I loved the Ood song. That was such a beautiful analogy for all that can be lost when people are enslaved: Identity, Culture, Language, Music, their way of thinking about the world... all of that. That guy transforming into an Ood... creepy!
I'm loving this season. Was there another Rose reference in this episode?

I saw this on Scifi last week and gotta say that I am loving Donna. Thank goodness for her and not another whole season of Martha. My favorite scene was the opening one when they got to planet and the Doctor starts to yabber on and on and she's just like "screw this. it's cold. I need a jacket." and leaves him there, lol. Then add insult to injury she disses his ride! I am arizona girl and I CANNOT handle cold weather so that made it all the much more endearing to me. Oh wow. Snow... pretty... can we go now? NO! WAIT! There's a freaking spaceship! Alright, we can stay.
