Would Lionel not have been buried with his wife in the elaborate grave that we saw in the first episode of the third season "Exile"? I mean they planned to bury Lex there why not Lionel too?

Ausiello said that there is a character who breathes his last. Dies. He's not coming back. No more cloning crap or anything this time. He's really dead.
That was probably just continuity error.

I think that he is dead.. and yes it was a continuity error that is for sure. But John Glover is contracted untill season 8 but he could return as a flashback or Ghost just a John Scheider did.

I believe it's Lex's doing. He did say no one would remember Lionel. What a better way to do that by burying Daddy Dearest in a grave surrounded by common people?

I believe he's gone, and it would be fitting for Lex to choose his final resting place and keep him away from the one that he loves. Awesome freaking Ep!!!!!!

Lex doesn't want anyone to remember his father. If you'll look closely at the overhead shot of Clark dropping the dirt, it was a plain pine box -- very much a pauper's funeral.

Not only was it a plain coffin, but the rest of the tombstones were the same plain ones. He said to Lionel before he pushed him that no one will remember him. And Lex made sure of it that not only the living will not remember him but even the dead his surrounded by don't know him.

Since Lionel was so important I thought he'd be buried next to Lillian not in a ordinary cementery like that one...but I point to Lex too.

When I saw his grave I immediately thought that it was Lex's doing. In the third season he did mention that kings would go to his funeral, and in this episode they did mention that he met many presidents and kings. It was Lex that closed off the funeral to everyone, which would explain the lackluster burial. You can't really say this is a continuity error because the creators could have made a huge tombstone with minimal budget.

Lex had him buried alone and in a very plain spot not only because he didn't want anyone to remember him, but also because he wouldn't want to bury the father he hated next to the mother he loved.

After we seen Lionel abuse little Lex & his mother in "Fracture" I very much doubt Lex would want them buried side by side. In "Memoria" we saw that Lillian pretty much hated him and wanted a divorce anyhow.

It sad how Lex buried Lionel where he wouldn't be remembered. But I can understand some of Lex's hatred toward Lionel, but after everything he did for Clark, it's just sad

I think Lex didnt feel connected with his father anymore (not that he ever did really, but anyway) so he probably just had him buried wherever. I forget his exact words but Lex says something to Lionel before he pushes him out the window about him being forgotten, something to that effect, so Lex probably had him buried in a random cemetery in metropolis instead of the family plot almost as being banished from the Luthor legacy even in death.
