I saw Descent promoted alot. I'm still not sure though because it's coming off a break. Maybe if it was coming after 2 or 3 episodes it would do better but we will see.

They probably won't be great because of the break, this episode is too dark, and it's too much about Lex, and not about Clark. Smallville is supposed to be about Clark with the other characters supporting that story.

"Descent" has been advertised as featuring what many fans have been waiting for since the beginning; however, I expect the ratings to be low. The CW has slacked off in the advertising this past week (preffering Gossip Girl and Farmer Wants a Wife), it's coming off of a three week break, there's some tough competition, and it was promoted as being Lex-centric and those episodes don't do very well in ratings (despite being good episodes). :(

As amazing as this episode was, and the entire season has been, The CW has done a poor job of promoting Smallville. The only time I ever heard about this episode was when I watched the repeats and saw the trailers during the commercial breaks. Other than that, nothing... Admittedly, the TVGuide channel slightly promoted the show, but I don't watch the TVGuide channel very often and wouldn't have known about the clip had it not been mentioned on one of Ksite's forums. I didn't seen much else though.
Now I will give credit where and when it is due. I must say that despite the lack of promotion, I am so thankful The CW renewed my favorite show, so I can cut them some slack... but come on, this is a great show, if the network wants more people to watch it, they should advertise it more. I'm sure there is more to the equation, and I guess it would be hard for newer viewers to catch up since the series is (sadly) a season away from ending, but it can be done, and the DVDs do occasionally go on sale... ultimately, I just want the show to do well and I don't want ratings to hinder it's success. All of that being said, even if I never hear another radio spot for the show, I know I am going to be tuning in every week (and my vote won't even count... I don't have a rating system hooked up to my TV set).

There's the problem, if all the promos are on around ther other shows, when there are less people watching, they seriously need to put on consistent ads, 15 or 16 over the popular watching hours every week.

what a shame. 3.49 million for one of the best moments ever on this show.
Thank god we are renewed already for next season, because i have to imagine the current powers that be are extremely disappointed that they promoted the fact that lex was throwing lionel out a window, did not bring in more viewers.
What a sad shame only 3.49 million.

Wow! Smallville beat ABC Lost in the 18-49 demo, and came close to beating in viewers.
I know Lost was a repeat, but still, Wow!

A lot of people probably didn't watch because their kids are still up at 8PM. I had to turn the channel twice. If it wasn't bad enough that Lex threw his own father out a 40 story window, they showed his bloody image at the bottom.
In addition to that, I winced whenever the little kid kept saying, "you killed dad", and then again, "you shouldn't have killed dad". I was so afraid of my son hearing that, and he did once, and I tried to play it off. No one wants their kids to hear that stuff or see it.

People are clearly not into the show anymore. It should have been worked to end in S5 or 6 imo. It's bad enough that ratings in the 5mil range would be considered great. Hopefully next season will be the last...for real this time.

its the strike, people !!!
notice how every time, the ratings are pretty good and they climb until we come till a break, the next episode is then lower because of the break takes 3/4 weeks to climb back up and then goes on a break and loses its ratings again. then come to veritas, and after hero, things werent so good, and we had another break.
YOU CANNOT HAVE THAT MANY BREAKS CW !!!!!!!!
And im sure every single one of you here agress with me, the amount of breaks they had this year was just completely ridiculous.
It would of done well.
the first 8 episodes were really good, and they werent even smallville at its best.
if it had, had no breaks, I would pretty accurately place the rating 5 1/2 mil
imagine if blue had gone straight into gemini and persona and fracture didnt have a break after it and neither did veritas ??
its not the shows fault. THE SHOW ROCKS !!!!!!

People are clearly not into the show anymore. How cares. The show has done brilliantly to get to an 8th season. Ratings are only important if they wanted to go beyond 8. None of the cast will go beyond an 8th.
Descent has set things up for Clark's final steps to the great man. Season 8 should be a celebration of that final part of his journey. Screw the US viewers who'd rather watch some reality TV dross.

I too was hoping for a bump into the 4 M range but the damn break in weeks really hurt I think. This was one of SV's all-time best episodes IMHO and it's a shame it scored in the mid 3's. A lot of old viewers would have enjoyed this episode and it may have hooked them for the remainder of the season.
Since it is renewed, I suppose ratings matter very little but still, this season has been superb and I think if people who abandoned the show years ago tuned in and watched a few episodes, they would realize that.

Well I have a feeling that for season 8 a lot of the people who use to watch Smallville but stopped watching might return for the final season and since a lot of them probably hated AlMiles so they might watch again.
I for one do believe the strike hurt the ratings. True they never would've been as high as the earliest seasons (1-3) but they still could've been higher than season 4 or 5 (already higher than season 6).

Except for Veritas (as interesting as it is - I will give it that) pretty much contradicts the continuity (and shabby as it's been among the years) and mythology of the series, especially in the first 3 (maybe even 5) seasons.

Ratings don't necessarily imply quality (case in point, reality TV), but drops in ratings tend to go with lack of quality. SV hasn't had good ratings in years -- and for good reason. To say Season 6 ratings were not bad (which they were, in relation to other shows and SV's past seasons) isn't saying much, since the season wasn't any good.
MD's preaching -- all shows (sans midseason shows and, again, reality (I don't watch em, so I'm not sure)) have hiatuses/breaks.

You don't look up on your facts do you? AlMiles left because of $ issues not because they didn't believe in their own show, and here's the proof.
http://www.tvguide.com/Ask-Ausiello/080409
Question: We need scoop on why Al Gough and Miles Millar left Smallville! This is a complete shock. I know you can get us answers!— Jesse
Ausiello: Everyone I spoke to about this — and that includes sources at the CW, Warner Bros. and the show itself — tell me two key issues played a role in their departure: money and movies. Warner Bros. apparently wasn't offering enough of the former, and their Smallville duties weren't affording them enough time to do the latter. Now, these same sources stressed that the duo's exit should not be likened to the seismic event that was Team Palladino's exodus from Gilmore Girls two years ago. Whereas Amy and Dan pretty much wrote and/or directed every episode of GG right up to the day they packed up and left, Al and Miles have been relatively hands-off in recent years, leaving much of the work to Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson. And since the four of them will now be running the show together, the transition will be a seamless one.
TV.com has the ratings of each episode of Smallville season 7 and IMO they're good. The people have spoken, like them or hate them.
Bizarro - 9/5/10
Kara - 9.3/10
Fierce - 8.9/10
Cure - 9.3/10
Action - 9.3/10
Lara - 9.4/10
Wrath - 9.2/10
Blue - 9.3/10
Gemini - 9.5/10
Persona - 9.4/10
Siren - 9.4/10
Fracture - 9.1/10
Hero - 8.6/10
Traveler - 9.5/10
Veritas - 9.0/10
Descent - 9.7/10
The people of IMDB have also spoken! And even these ratings are pretty good!
Bizarro - 8.8/10
Kara - 8.3/10
Fierce - 7.4/10
Cure - 7.5/10
Action - 7.8/10
Lara - 8.2/10
Wrath - 7.9/10
Blue - 8.2/10
Gemini - 8.1/10
Persona - 8.3/10
Siren - 8.0/10
Fracture - 7.7/10
Hero - 7.5/10
Traveler - 9.0/10
Veritas - 8.7/10
Descent - 9.1/10

Let's face it, Smallville is on a very lowly rated network. If I remember correctly, it is the fifth rated network - ouch - but it would explain why the show is consistently the fifth rated when it airs. Let's not forget that Smallville is one of the network's highest rated shows, even if three million is nothing compared to what American Idol gets, it is still a lot of people for the CW. In that sense, Smallville has been very consistent in viewership, and as far as ratings are concerned, that's why it's being renewed for another season, IMO.
P.S.
Smallville's quality is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I have loved every episode of this season.

I wish people would stop saying that, since the numbers are down, it proves that SV sucks. Yes, it's your opinion, but stop pointing at the ratings.
Only a complete idiot would expect a show in its seventh season to get the same numbers that it got in its earlier years. Especially a show that has switched networks, going to a weaker network, no less.
Also, anyone who spends a millisecond looking at ratings trends realizes that almost every single show takes a hit during spring, especially 8PM shows.

I guess I am in idiot side of things. I guess I would hope the show would be getting better and better after each year but what do I know, I am an idiot:D I have always wondered what my problem was but now I do! Thanks Andrew:)

Actually, it is.
And how does it prove that? I'm not the one who brought up the tv.com/imdb fan ratings as evidence...
Those weren't viewer ratings. Those were just a rating out of 10 for each episode from IMDB and TV.com, not VIEWER RATINGS for Nielsen reports.

At least Season 7 is doing better than Season 6, hopefully Season 8 can reboot its ratings higher.

I'm aware of that. That was my point... (Where did I say "viewer ratings"?)

Uh... nor was I. But they're just about as reliable as Nielsen ratings considering Nielsen only uses a very small percentage of Americans to guess the amount of viewers for each show.

Quality wise, SV has been getting better and better, IMO. But you can't expect a scripted show in its seventh season to be getting the same numbers it had in its earlier seasons. No matter how good a show is, people will lose interest over the years (Lost, Heroes, Supernatural, and Desperate Housewives are down, just to name a few). Also, it's harder for people to jump onto old shows.

And not only that, but SV has had to switch to a new, weaker network... a network whose focus is on shows like Gossip Girl.

The Final rating for Descent is 3.61 the 3.49 was the fast nat'ls.
I guess some posters think Smallville sucks and others don't. I personally, absolutely love Smallville, all 7 Seasons. Lower or higher ratings will not change that! I still enjoy following the ratings and it makes me happy when they go up!
Smallville still has very loyal fans, even some who say it sucks and watch anyway.

It doesn't matter too much, old seasons of Smallville are on loads of networks, in the uk alone its on 2 networks, itv netweork for seasons 1-3 and channel four network for seasons 4 + (7 has yet to start).
Believe me, just because in the states smallville hasn't got awsome ratings anymore doesn't mean that the show as a whole isn't making a hell of a lot of money. I shouldn't loose any sleep over it.

That's funny, all the seasons that went up started off Clana happy.
Season two Whitney was gone and Clark was making his move on Lana and they ended up as a couple by the end of the season!
Season five Clana were finally together as a couple.
Season seven Clana are finally together as a couple without the secret.
Of course I'm not trying to say Clana brings ratings...
...Who am I kidding, that's exactly what I'm trying to say after looking at that write-up above! Sorry I tried, I really did!
