I have to have my wisdom teeth removed on Wednesday.
http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_9_7.gif

I need some moral support. I think I'm gonna have a nervous breakdown. I've never had any type of surgery before. And for those of you who have had it done before, what was it like fore you? Was it excruciating?

dont worry, i had them removed about half a year ago.. not because i NEEDED too but because, i thougt they might be crowding my teeth. ANYWAY. dont worry, its not bad at all, They gave me knock out gas, and i was out... next thing i know im up, and its like a half hour later.
when i woke up, it was a great feeling too, the gas was great. a couple of days later i felt some soreness. but they gave me perscriptions too. all in all it was fine,

and i'd do it again too. the gas was that great

Well, my wisdom teeth came in straight so I can't tell you what removing them is like, but my sister had them removed a few years ago. She said it isn't that bad, except for the chipmunk cheeks. :) You'll be fine.

I have a feeling that whenever mine grow in they're going to have to come out.

My brother and friend had theirs out last year, and said it wasn't so bad besides having to eat soup and stuff for a few days.

I got all 4 of mine removed last June, and it wasn't bad at all. My face wasn't swollen or bruised and I could eat solid food almost right away.

Just think of all the ice cream you could have once you get them out :)

I never had any type of surgery so I can't offer any advice. Based on those who have gone through this experience have previously said, you should be fine. Actually more than fine, you should get a laugh out of it.

Teen Chef, don't worry. I'm sure the procedure will go ahead very smoothly and before you know it, you'll be awake with your whole body covered in slobber.

The actual procedure isn't bad; like others have said, you don't feel anything, and before you know it's all over. It is a little rough for a couple days after that, but not too bad. I don't remember experiencing much pain. Maybe a little soreness, nothing a little tylenol couldn't handle. Little things like brushing your teeth are difficult for a while, and of course you can't eat solid food, but of course those are just inconveniences. The worst part really is the anticipation.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled in one operation. Two of my molars were impacted, and the other two were no longer growing. I was under a local anesthetic, so I was awake during the whole procedure.

I won't lie to you. After the anesthesia wore off, I was in pain. I haven't ever experienced serious pain, so I suppose it's the worst pain I ever went through. However, that's not saying much. The pain medication was good, but it didn't completely dull the pain. I wasn't able to eat normal foods for several weeks. I had the added pressure of having my finals during the same week.

Having said all this, I don't look back on it with regret. There was no other choice. Though the ordeal was painful, I'm sure it pales in comparison to the pain I would have had if I hadn't had the surgery. The pain will end, and with the pain medication it isn't unbearable even while you're going through it.

Plus, at the end, you'll have a new found apreciation for food. :) I can't tell you how great my first post-operation steak tasted. Everything will taste better for a few weeks, and then you'll start getting back into the swing of things. After a few months, you probably won't even think about it. It's been six years since I had my molars pulled, and I think about it quite rarely. It's certainly not a scarring experience. I think of it as an unpleasant distraction in an otherwise great year.

Sounds painful, having your wisdom teeth removed - mine have started to grow. It causes pain sometimes but not as much as I thought it would. In fact, they don't bother me at all once the growing stops - it's a very slow process, is that supposed to be normal?
So next time I pay a visit to our dentist, I hope he's not going to scream:"Hey, that's a wisdom tooth, let's have it removed!"
He's a bit of a fanatic, that guy :D

How do you know if your wisdom teeth are growing? Which ones are your wisdom teeth anyway? Does everyone get them, because right now I only have two molars on each side...

Dukegirl
02-23-2004, 05:17 AM
I noticed it when I was looking in the mirror (really, I can keep on staring at my teeth to see if they're clean and white - not pearly white, but clean white) and I noticed a bit of tooth coming out in the back of my mouth. When I touched that area with my finger, it hurt a bit and I knew that that meant the tooth was coming out. After two days or so, the pain stopped.

I'm not sure whether everyone gets them, you can get them pretty early (when you're fourteen-sixteen) or later (I'm 18) or even when you're in your thirties. And not everyone needs to have them removed. In my case, I don't think it's absolutely necessary, first of all it doesn't bother and I don't think it's pushing away the other teeth - if that's the case then they have to go, so ask your dentist next time you visit him/her.

I don't know that I ever felt mine growing in. I could see that they were, and feel them with my finger. The wisdom teeth, or molars, are the teeth in the very back. Everyone gets them as far as I know, but many, if not most, people have to have them removed. Two on each side is what you're supposed to have.

I was lucky and only had two wisdom teeth. One of them had to be removed. It was good times too! Shot me up with lots of a novacaine then stuck a pair of pliers in my head and yanked it out. The dentist had to put his left palm on my forehead to get more leverage. Hearing the tooth come out practically made me pass out.

Yep... HATED IT!

However, the pain killers were simply BRILLIANT! Percodan was my friend.

I think the majority of the people who have their wisdom teeth pulled don't have a problem. I did though it wasn't fun at all, they didn't give me gas, they just frooze them, two didn't freeze so I had them just pull them anyways and it hurt so bad, I screamed like a girl and the people in the office next door to the dentist came over to see what was going on. But I waited to long to have them out, and one of them need to be split in half because of the root, the ones that were frozen weren't bad at all, just discomfort after the freezing wore off, the other ones hurt forever, but you will not have a problem I think I got everyone elses bad experiance so everyone elses should go smoothly.

I guess I didn't mention that I'm not getting them PULLED. They haven't really come in all the way and and they just kinda peek out once in a while, and then grow back in. The dentist thinks, based on x-rays, that they will cause me problems if they aren't removed, so I have to have them surgicaly removed. As in an operation. I was told it might take up to an hour.
Thanks for the reassurance you guys. I feel a little better, still nevouse though. Does the Knockout gas have a smell?

BTW Giz, the girl in my sig is Charlotte Church.:D

thats the same thing that happened to me exactly, but it took less than an hour... at least, you wont have to take them out yourself, with a rock, and broken ice skate blade.
