It seems pretty funny he personally requests her to write his expose if he fears her "curiousity" so much...
But yeah, great line from Lex.

Gotta feel bad for her. Things never turn out right for her. Lois, lately has more balls than everyone except for Lex. I wish, once, she didn't get dumped, duped and left alone. As beautiful as she is, she should be the dumper.

I think ever though Lois has a hard exterior that when she lets her guard down and dates guys she isn't the first to dump to guy. Remember she is looking for love as well and doesn't want to be quick to dump the guy. However, even after the break up she still comes out stronger than ever. I definitely think after this break up with Grant she will really jump on Lex's butt and look for anything to bring him down. Especially now that he owns the Planet.
I'm really upset with everyone saying that Lois is too incompetent and should have never been given the assignment of Lex's expose. Hello Lex picked her because he thought he could control what went in to the expose and in turn got the shock of his life when he found out the information she received from her source. (ok sorry for the little rant at the end, I just had to get that out)

I don't mean to sound like a sadist, but I really like Lois breakup scenes because they actually managed to made me feel both for the dumped and the dumper, even if neither Oliver and Grant couldn't bring themselves to tell Lois who they really are.
Also I like how mature they've handled both breakups, no stupid pining, whining, "say you don't love me, yeah I don't love you, woe upon me and you" nonsense, weeping or sulking. Just an honest acknowledgment that things just aren't gonna work out between us, we're better off going on our separate ways.

I think that was one of the best lines in the whole ep  absolutely Lex!!! and the expression on Lois's face was just too much...though I feel kinda sorry for her because everything turns into the wrong way in her life :(

I hadn't thought too much about why he personally requested her, but I have a few ideas. One is that he wanted to check up on Grant and make sure he'd really broke it off with her. Another is that he may have been afraid that Chloe would get it instead, and he knew that Chloe has enough on him to do real harm. Finally it could just be that he doesn't think Lois is that great of a reporter and figured she'd write up a proper fluff piece that wouldn't cast him in a bad light.

I like Lois breakup scenes because they are very intense considering how much Lois holds in her feelings. But let's face it, when people break up, they DO generally tend to whine and cry. Whining and crying is much more realistic, these boards are proof of that.

Agreed, I'm simply saying that I like Lois for the very fact that she doesn't whine and cry and throw pity parties when she broke up. She doesn't put the guy through a wringer too and knows better than to make things harder that they already are.
Lois is clearly sad over Grant and totally heartbroken over Oliver but she also understood that that's their choice to make. And she's definitely not going spend her time pining over them either, just pick up the pieces and move on.

I believe it's primarily out of sheer arrogance ("I always find a way to win in the end") and wanting to rub it in Lois' face ("Do you really think you're different from any other reporter?"). Lex is perfectly aware that Lois knows the truth about him, but doesn't have any proof.
Also, by personally requesting her to write the expose, he would be able to know just how much Lois could uncover on her own, and how he could use that to better cover his tracks.

Def-initely! I was totally spoiled going into this ep but this one fact was something I didn't know so it totally floooored me. not to mention that Lex's delivery was so classic badguy. It was just a great twist.
I also have to nominate the "you're not my brother! you're a mistake!" shout.
It's so great having Mike at full force.

Great points!
I'm quite willing to believe that he was also counting on her inexperience vs. Chloe, as MidgardDragon suggested. As of yet, Lois is unproven and I'm loving it how she keeps surprising people with her qualities!
Lex's complimentary talk of Lois in "Blue" just seemed to me like his usual sympathetic devilry, trying to get Grant to feel like Lex was on his side while opposing his wishes, etc. He may be intrigued by Lois but up to then he had no basis for esteem.

Remember that the Lex Lois will be a game?? cuase both like danger etc etc...
if it is a game then of course Lex would ask Lois to do the article and at the end ask for her specificly to stay in the staff.
A game

Maybe Lex will fire lois for incompetency and she can return to the Inquisitor and really begin to work herself up the ladder rather than being handed leads (like Chloe's information given here in Gemini that was from years of effort), or begged (as lois begged Chloe for a bone previously) or lightswitched...next week lois Lane a brilliant star reporter!!
Not.
Maybe she will work her way up the hard way over time and earn some respect along the way.
I bet not.

I see Smallville is using material from the comics again.
Lois got her foot into the Planet by bringing in an expose on Lex.
Lex owned and shut down the Planet, but kept Lois on the payroll of his new publication to "keep an eye on her".Their antagonism toward each other helped bring the Lois/Clark partnership and then romance into fruition.
perhaps all parties ARE headed toward their destinies after all.

so, i haven't seen l&c for a LONG time, but that line kind of reminded me of the episode at the end of the first season of l&c where lex buys the planet.
except on l&c, he was pretending to buy it 'cause he loves lois, instead of a sarcastic "merry christmas lois..." pretty much a pointless comment that i just made...the line just made me think of that, haha.

I'm really looking forward to antagonistic Lexis. FINALLY something I want that they MIGHT not mess up. Of course this being MR's last yeard and with AlMiles mentioning 'Thomas Crowne Affair' in relation to upcoming Lexis this season . . . I'm still a little afraid but I'm crossing my fingers that AlMiles just didn't know what that movie was about.
I gotta say SteveS that while I know you still dislike Lois a lot on SV, your posts lately are a lot nicer than they used to be. I'm proud of you. Merry Christmas. (A TripleL kiss for you)

I was so happy when Lex wiped that smug look off of Lois' face. He is always one step ahead. I love it!!

It's so funny that you mentioned this movie. I remembered it when I was thinking about how pleased I was that Lex outwitted Lois. In the movie, I always hated how over-confident Renee Russo's character was. She thought she "had" Thomas Crowne figured out. But boy was she wrong. He was always one step ahead of her and he outmaneuvered beautifully. Adrien Brody in the movie Oxygen was also someone who had everything in control the whole time and was allways ahead of the cops.
I just felt so exhilarated when Lex efficiently put Lois in her place. He was awesome. I simply love characters like that. It's like a game of chess but these guys think 10 steps ahead while the girls are only concerned with their next move.
*sigh* It is so HOT how Lex always has control of situations.......
