View Full Version : You Sure You Want to Block Out the Sun, Zor-El?

Ok, did I miss something? Zor-El's plan was to kill the human race by blocking out the Sun, right?
Well, besides the fact that that would take a really, really long time, don't they get their powers from the yellow sun of Earth? I'm pretty sure we could survive long enough for their solar "charge" to run out, and then they'd be screwed just like the rest of us.
Comic book nerds (I say say that with love) , help me out here. I thought they needed direct sunlight, but is it just proximity?
Either way, if Monty Burns can't block out the Sun, no way Zor-El can.

it's not the rays that give Zor-el his powers it's the energy and he stores it not channels the suns energy so no he wouldn't lose his powers. besides i don't like this Zor-El being evil thing he's not supposed to be an enemy he's supposed tro be a good guy

I think his plan was just to get everyone in the Planet to have pictures of the eclipse on their monitors, to try to capitalize on Heroes' symbol.

Actually, blocking the sun would rob him off his powers, if it was blocked for long enough. The energy of the sun wouldn't be getting here like we're used to. Most of it would end up deflected. Unless he's just filtering out visible light, and heat, and somehow still keeping energy coming in (which doesn't really work).
As for us being able to live, most of us wouldn't. If the sun's rays were blocked, the Earth would cool, to the point we'd enter a new ice age, and most of the population of the earth human wise would be killed off. We wouldn't be able to do things like drill for oil, or things like that, because it the oceans would freeze, and all the exposed land would become permafrost.

no it wouldn't he doesn't channel it he stores it it's not the rays it's the energy where his powers come from it would not rob him of his powers because he would still have energy stored

Simply removing sunlight would eventually kill all humans, but not quickly. Humans have the capacity to alter our environment. That is why we have humans living in stations in Antarctica where virtually nothing else can survive. ALL other life on earth would perish much faster... plant-life, fungi, animals, protists, etc. Which would end up making the planet largely uninhabitable, even for Kryptonians. Great plan Jor-El!

They do store energy, but without the sun, they won't be getting replenishment for any powers they use while the sun is blocked, unless they all plan to fly into space for a while everyday.
And humans would die off as well. Sure, humans live in antarctica. However, they depend on supplies gotten from places like kansas, things like food, and clothing manufactured from things like cotton, down, whatever else. The whole world would become an uninhabitable frozen wasteland. Which means no farming, and no raw materials for manufacture.

Eh. It would have taken months of the sun being blocked to affect earth. People in Alaska can deal without the sun for awhile.
I think this was a glossed over implication that if the plants died, it would affect its ecosystem. For example, herbivores might die off and less food supplies might cause starvation or some such.
Hal makes a good point. People in Alaska can order fruit and vegetables from other places - like Kansas. Yet if these places can't provide surplus for Alaska due to no sun, there might have been an issue.
However, I didn't get the whole 'hurry Clark!' thing. I would have encouraged killing Zor- El first and then worry about taking out the Crystal.

Whatever it was probably gave off some pretty bad radioactive rays or something.

it's not the light that gives them powers ar the rays energy and an eclipde won't block out the energy just the sunlight and kryptonians can survive alot longer without food or anything than humans can
