Has anyone noticed that now when either Kara or Clark are in SH mode everything goes white around them?

Yeah, that's their new effect. I think I like it better than the little bone inside the ear moving, and the voice waves moving from the speaker's mouth stright into Clarks' ear which didn't make sense at all. This way, you can watch Clark's expression.

The "sound waves" effect shot is one that we've seen plenty of times before throughout this series. With that said, since I've seen it before and have seen it enough to know how it works in relation to his power, I'm personally not tripping off of it being replaced by something more reminiscent of Peter Parker's "Spider-sense"... ONLY if the producers' motive for using the new way is to save money for more big-budget effects like that extraordinary car flip/explosion (which is displayed immediately after the effect shot).
And I can almost guaranteed you that the prioritization of effects budget appropriations is the main reason for the new super-hearing effect.

It adds a little more visual effect, but I have to agree the sound waves are better.
Now we have to wait for the "Light Bulb" to work over the BDA's head.

The flash is light is okay, but I preferred when they had only used it for Kara. Clark should have the soundwaves around the ear and Kara should have the light. I thought that's what they were doing when they used it for the first time with Kara, but oh well.

I would rather they just show a close-up of his ear, then .... :\ :(

It's called being cheap. I guess reusing the same special effect was too expensive for them.

I'm not a fan of the new effect, but I'd rather save the budget for when Clark flies for the first time.

I agree with Mello Penelo i dont like the new affect. it think it makes it seem very dream like.

It's fake. I wouldn't even have a problem with them doing the sound effect from Lois & Clark, but this effect sucks.

yeah, that's right.... They've used the lighting effects for flashbacks or dream sequences, etc. Again. I don't like it at all for showing super-hearing. I'd rather they use no effect at all and just have the camera zoom in on his ear or something. The light makes no sense and is stupid. :(

Zooming in on his ear would take away from being able to show Clark's reaction to hearing it.

well just for a second maybe..... or they could make it like a semi-transparent overlay, or somethin? :\ .no matter what, this stupid white-out thing doesn't work. :(

I don't like it.
I didn't like the little bone in the ear thing either.
I would prefer to just to see like.. a shot going from inside the ear, outside, to wherever the conversation is. Then have the conversation kind of echo, and show Clark or Kara focussing.

I would prefere no effect, just a face shot and the sound of whatever Clark or Kara are hearing. therefore it would only be acting and sound editing, cheaper again.
However i think this effect is for younger people, smallville have tried to put in to many trivial power effects. I liked the first effects for CLarks heatvision aswell, the one which was transparent, i thnk this red heat vision looks too CG.

I agree, although the heat-vision doesn't bother me as much.

The show has a budget. The show uses its ENTIRE budget. It's not a matter of saving money. It's a matter of where the money is spent.
IF (and that's a big if, since I do not know) the new superhearing effect is cheaper than the old one, then way to go new effect!!! Who among us watches the show primarily because of the amazing superhearing graphics??? :) The great special fx that really enhance the show are not the ones related to Clark's ears.
Personally, I actually like the new superhearing fadeout more than the old close up of CK's ear with the vibrating inner ear bones. I thought the old one was really terrible. When I watched the show in the presence of non-SV fans, I was always really embarassed when they'd show that graphic, because I thought it made the show look pretty dumb (dumber than it is supposed to be! :)). This new one I think looks pretty good, and it allows us to see Clark's expression to the news he's hearing.
Even if you dislike the new effect with relation to the old one though, isn't it worth it if we get to see better graphics in other areas? (such as, as another poster pointed out, the excellent car flip complete with door smacking Clark backside of the head!)
Heck, let them appropriate some money from the special effects and bring in some writers that can handle concepts like continuity! :)

My favorite SH effect that I've seen was the one used in Superman Returns. It was clear from the warbling that he was using superhearing, so there was no question about it, but the camara was free to show any actor's expression.

the light flash thing has to go. it has no business representing super-hearing.
It looks more like it's shifting to an AU or dream sequence, or an explosion or alien spaceship or superpowered zoner just dropped in.... :(
