I hope it does really well. And I predict it will do well as long as chloe is in it.

MidgardDragon

4 to 5 million. There's no way a premiere will go below 4 million even with a total lack of advertising. Now with proper advertising, with the coming of Supergirl and Bizarro to draw in old fans and new alike, we could've had 6 million, or at least close.

superspider02
09-27-2007, 11:28 AM
I voted for 5million viewers i am hope it in in the 4-5million range like the episodes that got 5million viewers in season 6, It would be great if the show was making heroes, csi, survivor rating if that happened the network would probably shell out more cash to the show and they could do alot more stuff then.

I'm hoping for 5.3 million viewers, but expecting 4.5.

It's a shame too. This episode could have had very high viewership, but the CW barely put any promotion into it.

Great episode but with the lack of promotion it'll probably be just a little higher than last year's finale. Then again, maybe it'll surprise us all and pull in 6 million. They introduced Supergirl and had Bizarro, two major mythos characters, I'm sure a lot of comic book fans tuned in. Those that aren't too busy whining about the show and saying Clark would never do this or never do that and popping their pimples while they write 30 page letters to Al/Miles saying how Smallville is teh worst show eva and they should really incorporate Action Comics #231 into an episode and then the showed be perfect blah blah blah.

Okay I'm done ranting about fanboys, back to business.

The final may be close to the 4 million mark, I know it would have done much better had they blitzed the airwaves with promos.

I called some family that used to regularly watch and (I admit I was untruthful with them, but I did see the promo and they hadn't ;) ) and told them I had seen it already and that they *MUST* see this one, they said they had not heard anything about it, much less Supergirl being on it.
After the episode, one called me back and thanked me saying that it is nothing like it used to be and her family probably will watch again now that "Supergirl" is now on it.
So more advertising would have helped.

why doesn't the CW advertise the show more? I mean . . . they spent a fortune on that Gossip Girl show, that is probably gonna be a bust, if they put a 1/4 of that money into Smallville they coulda pulled in 6 million last night

Not the greatest ratings. However, the show wasn't promoted well.

I LOVED LOVED the ending with Clark and Lana staring up at the moon. It was the highlight of the episode for me. I was pretty bored throughout the episode, but I kept watching to see when Lana would appear.

I loved how they were looking at a half moon symbolizing two halves apart, eventually becoming one.

Clark and Lana are star-crossed lovers. What a beautiful scene :)

The half hour breakdown:8pm-4.77 mil. 8:30pm-5.38 mil.
Looks good for an 8th season, just have to keep up the ratings. CW would have to be crazy to cancel Smallville! BTW I thought "Bizarro" was awesome, something for everyone:)

STFanatic

I did an impromptu poll of some people over lunch, of the ones I talked to who watched it, they said they will be watching it next week, the others who didn't, including some who never have watched, said they would like to check it out since "Supergirl" is on it, (like her or not, she is a good selling point) I explained to them it is not like the old "Adventures of Superman or Lois & Clark as no one wears a costume or anything like that, and I (we counting the other Smallville watchers in the group) sort of described the series to them.
So if word gets out, and everyone tells a few other people about it, maybe they will pick up a few more viewers.

Smallville won't get cancelled if it maintains this level, but history tells us that the ratings will likely drop near the end of the season. It really is too early to tell, but it is off to a good start.

Excellent rating, but I fear that it's going to quickly decline towards the end of the season due to the huge 3- to 4-week breaks that they tend to take around March and April.

well, i dont think they will fold for at least 2 more years, just the amount of time Smallville's window remains open

as for it being the highest rated show-this is amazing news. i am very happy it eclipsed 5 million viewers.

also, i expect a big audience next week for the introduction of Supergirl-she has gotten a lot of publicity over the summer (writeups in Stuff Magazine and USA Today)

These ratings are unreal. If this season starts out at 5 million, it's possible that a big Justice League episode in the middle of the season could break 6. It looks like Bizarro and Supergirl have been a positive thus far for Smallville. I have to give credit to TPTB for heavily promoting that.

dropping ratings at the end of the season don't really affect a show's future. That's the first half of the season which is really taken into account. last year samllville did well in the first hal of S6 and got renewed. By january G&M should know whether or not they're coming back. Let's say yesterday's ratings are definitely an asset.

Not bad in the ratings department, especially considering that, unless you are a die-hard fan, you would never have known sv was premiering last night. What is with the CW in not promoting its best show? A little advertising ought to add about 2 million viewers. Hey CW think about it!

5.08 million viewers is pretty good, especially considering the poor promotion. It's higher than last season's finale and premiere, it makes "Bizarro" the most watched ep. since "Justice," and it's the CW's most watched program of the week so far and their second most watched program of the new season (behind only ANTM's season opener of 5.22).

I hope the lesson the CW takes from this isn't, "Oh, we can treat SV like crap and still get a decent audience!"

Ok. I guess I've forgotten how to read the chart. I'm a little disappointed to see what the numbers could've been had they had more promotion, but if the CW is smart, they'll give Smallville at least one more year if they want to stay afloat because these other shows are a complete joke.

Why all the "ouching"? Smallville pulled good ratings for a CW show. This isn't NBC, we can't expect 14 million viewers. 5.08, better than the Zod premiere, better then the Phantom finale, and just barely out of range of the Justice episode. For Season 7, that's a good rating. Anyone remember the idiot claiming that the premiere would only get 3 million? Where is that guy now?

It's just the new people around here. 5 millions is very good for Smallville and shows to the CW how stubborn the Smallville fans are.

Also shows the trend that mythology episodes are the ones that bring ratings. Kara next week will get at 4.5 million. Not low expectations, but it's easier to predict by the bottom.

Everyone also needs to remember to take ratings with a grain of salt. Remember that they are estimated and they have no way to take into account every home or every TV set that was watching the show. It's a very arbitrary number, really, but great to see a good one nonetheless since people put so much stock in them.

Also remember that the networks are using the Live+3 ratings this season, not just the final nationals.

That means that DVR viewings of the episode it in the three days after the initial airing are counted and will be used in determining ad rates.

That is a definite positive for Smallville, and should push the ratings closer to the 6 million mark.

That is a definite positive for Smallville, and should push the ratings closer to the 6 million mark.

when will the final numbers be out then? monday?

Hell want to hear some bad news? Heroes is getting counted in the ratings twice. Yep twice. Some fancy shmancy neilsen ratings trial run thing is being used on Heroes. Its final numbers will be counted this Saturday. Following it's encore on Sat night, but the catch is only the new viewers are being counted. Its like this say 500 people watch the encore , and 300 were repeat viewers. Only 200 will be counted as new and added to the final tally. It's just Sooooo Awwwesssommme! No?

Yes, but I'm not sure we will be able to access them. They will probably be given to only the advertisers.

I'm just kidding with you Midgard.:) But I have to say, 5 million viewers for a premier is very impressive. Considering the spoilers which I will not get into here, this season of Smallville has the potential to be a big success.

:P

I know you're kidding, but just to clarify, them not counting every home is technically a positive, since it means more people are watching Smallville then even the good ratings indicate.

The reason Bizarro was able to break the 5 mil mark is more than likely the word of mouth from comic fans, Wizard Magazine, ComicCon, Stuff etc. They did a good job hyping the arrival of Supergirl this season.

Hopefully they keep up the good work! When is DC going to do more to finally start hyping this show on their site more?! Isn't it way past due?

Now, let's compare to earlier Smallville seasons. Anybody got ratings from S1?

Yeah, I have to agree with you on ComicCon considering a few clips of Bizarro and Kara were shown. It also got the fans to talk about the show more.

Wow the first seasons were huge ratings...now they have been maintained around 3-5 mill viewers.

Those were the good days. Maybe they should go back on Tuesdays at 9pm.:\

i dont know where it is, but Smallville's rank compared to shows as a whole is pretty similar. i.e. even with those high ratings, the show never eclipsed being the 80th highest one-in fact i think most seaons rank in the 100s.

yes the ratings were bigger back then, but so were a lot of other shows-why dont you think you see shows lasting longer on tv anymore?

if i find it, ill post it here.

EDIT:

its on smallville's wikipedia site

Season Timeslot Season Premiere[2] Season Finale[2] TV Season Rank # Viewers

7th Thursday 8/7C[83] September 27, 2007 2007-

and if you want to see it, just go to wikipedia.com and type in smallville

so as you can see, the ranks for the shows has pretty much been consistent.

Yep, I believe it used to be normal for some shows (on the major networks) to get over 30 million viewers. Now, GA and CSI are considered monster hits because they get 20 million.

And the pilot encored just two days after its premiere to be viewed by more people than the latest original episode of GG.

As long as they keep lana away so that Clark can fulfill his destiny as a superhero that would be great, and than bring back her in the 3rd epoisde. DO NOT KILL OFF CHOLE SHE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CLARK CAUSE SHE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOW AND UNDERSTANDS CLARK.

re: all seasons

Would ya look at that, the most talked about Smallville season has around the same viewers, with the starting episodes being over 6 mil and then dropping down to 5 and 4 mil, as Seasons 5, parts of Season 6, and the premiere of 7:

SMALLVILLE
Season 3
Time Period: Wednesdays 8 p.m.

Episode 1 (10/01/03) - Viewers: 6.8 million
Episode 2 (10/08/03) - Viewers: 6.7 million
Episode 3 (10/15/03) - Viewers: 6.5 million
Episode 4 (10/22/03) - Viewers: 6.9 million
Episode 5 (10/29/03) - Viewers: 6.7 million
Episode 6 (11/05/03) - Viewers: 6.7 million
Episode 7 (11/12/03) - Viewers: 6.9 million
Episode 8 (11/19/03) - Viewers: 6.4 million
Episode 9 (1/14/04) - Viewers: 5.6 million
Episode 10 (1/21/04) - Viewers: 5.1 million
Episode 11 (1/28/04) - Viewers: 5.5 million
Episode 12 (2/04/04) - Viewers: 5.3 million
Episode 13 (2/11/04) - Viewers: 5.0 million
Episode 14 (2/18/04) - Viewers: 5.3 million
Episode 15 (2/25/04) - Viewers: 4.9 million
Episode 16 (3/03/04) - Viewers: 5.3 million
Episode 17 (4/14/04) - Viewers: 4.5 million
Episode 18 (4/21/04) - Viewers: 4.4 million
Episode 19 (4/28/04) - Viewers: 4.3 million
Episode 20 (5/05/04) - Viewers: 4.7 million
Episode 21 (5/12/04) - Viewers: 4.5 million
Episode 22 (5/19/04) - Viewers: 5.9 million

And that was when it was on the WB, when ratings were better all around in the first place. But this show, the #1 scripted show on the network, is so horrible. Yeah right, I think people who b*tched about last season's ratings need to take a good hard look at this. Only Seasons 1 and 2, when the show was new and should be expected to perform better, managed to pull in over 7 mil ratings. Even season 5 managed to pull in the 6 mil occassionally. And which season was the switch-over to The CW? Whadaya know, it was Season 6, still holding stong with 5's and 4's for the most part despite having fewer channels overall to pull ratings from.

Heroes is on NBC, one of the big three networks, that will never happen. Heroes had more viewers for it's Season 2 premiere then Smallville has ever had for a single episode. That's okay, though, because Smallville is on a much smaller network.

- 2.0/5 A25-54

Woohoo! Man, that's a pleasant surprise. As a tragic, I don't really GAF what the ratings look like, but if this rates well throughout the season and TPTB find their mojo, hell, a season 8 ain't out of the question.

Although, I'm with vyperman. TW is starting to show his growth rings. I think they need to do a few less close ups on the double chin and the hairy mole on the right cheek bone. I think it's time for make up and vaseline on the lens, ala Barbara Walters!!!!

About season 3, just one word, Shattered (yes, 3.08).

Although it was one of the best episodes, it managed to piss alot of viewers. Asylum pushed the rest with the "reset button".

Live + 7 ratings for the week of Sept 23-30 were released today.

From mediaweek -

-The CW’s most played back show was the season-premiere of Smallville, with 841,000 additional viewers (representing 15.0 percent of the total DVR contribution).

_______________________________________________

There is still confusion regarding whether same day DVR viewership is included in that figure. If it is, the increase from the final rating will be lower, because same day DVR numbers, meaning people that record the show on Sept 27 and watch it before 3am Sept 28, were already included in the final rating.

_________________________________________________

Anyway - It looks like the Final Viewer Number is between 5.5 to 6 million depending on what those numbers represent.
