View Full Version : Family of Blood
The Ninth Doctor

The most recent episode to air in the US, and in my opinion, one of the best of the New Who series.
Great drama, great characterisation of the Doctor, Martha was not so annoying with her romance (though it will get old soon), great villains (the family themselves were portrayed so that it was obvious they were alien in nature, but not in an over the top way. The little ticks, facial expressions, etc were perfect. The henchman were cheasy, but they didn't have the required villain of the week mantra (ie "Hungry!" "Delete." "Burn with me!" etc) so that was a plus) and an ending with great Doctor awesomeness.
What did everyone else think?
Fantastic episode, even on re-watches!
You're in for a treat in the next episode, it's the awesome "Blink". Enjoy!
Oh, and if you've not read any spoilers for it yet, steer clear of them. Though realise that could be hard since it was so well received over here!

The preview did look very interesting. Thanks for the warning, I'll be stearing clear of any Who related sites until Friday.

*Hint* It's the third of three episodes that had the UK united for once and shouting for RTD to be given his marching orders. It's an example of how good who could consistently be.

I felt family of blood was a step down in story from Human nature but i though it was DT's best acting to date. Its a credit to him that at the end you still don't know who he is.
this weeks martha problem is that she didn't stop him exacting his terrible revenge at the end. What she said and did in this episode blatently contradicts donna saying 'find someone, because i think you need someone to stop you' instead we get 'because he's lonely'. I guess thats the problem with 2 different writers and 2 different interpretations of the character

Yeah, but that's the thing - that was the doctor being merciful and pulling himself just short of going over the top; all he did was suspend them in time so they could be immortal, thereby granting their wish. Considering this is the same character who alledgedly stopped the time war by doing something terrible, and is referred to by the kaleds as "the oncoming storm", I think he was being fairly lenient.
Not just a sonic screwdriver y'see. ;)
And let's face it...Martha isn't exactly a decently built character
The biggest travesty is, I would have loved to have seen the story with sylvester in the title role, as he really is underestimated as an actor. If you enjoyed the show, you should probably check out the book. It was, however, a thrill to see the notebook in human nature with the previous doctors sketched.
Some of the best dialogue of the whole series 3, right here:
Tim Latimer: He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun.
The Doctor: [quickly and almost whispering] Stop it.
Tim Latimer: He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and can see the turn of the universe.
The Doctor: Stop it, I said stop it.
Tim Latimer: and... he's wonderful.
Wonderful how a boy could deliver that.

I really loved this episode (and the one before).
The thing about Martha not stopping his revenge, is interesting because I don't think he even told her what he was doing or if asked her opinion that time. And I think it was important to show that part of the Doctor - his dark, terrible and godlike nature - especially in contrast with his human form self.
And I agree about DT's acting, he was really amazing in this episode.

I loved the ending of this ep', and not just how the Dr made them live forever though that was pretty cold, i liked the fact that the Dr and Martha went to see Tim at the war memorial, i had a real lump in the throat during that scene.
Really great double ep'.
