View Full Version : Best Companion?

In the other thread people are discussing the merits of Martha vs. Rose or Sarah Jane Smith.
But who do you all think is the best companion?
Let your thoughts be heard!

I have unsurprisingly picked Rose. :) Does Captain Jack really count, though? I would pick him in a heartbeat (well, the Dr. Who version, not the Torchwood version) if I thought he counted as a "companion". But I think of him more as an occasional tag-along, not a true companion in the sense Rose and Martha were.
ETA: Wouldn't it be great to see Jack as a season-long companion just once, though?

As cool as it is that Doctor Who has won a new generation of fans with the current series, I have to cast my lot with the loyalists of the Tom Baker (scarf Doctor) era ... K-9, The Brigadier, even that she-warrior Leela ... and of course my favourite companion ever:
Sarah Jane Smith!
She was scrappy, she'd get into all those crazy predicaments (and she'd be the one to tell the Doctor that it was crazy) ... she was an investigative journalist, and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. I can remember all those times we'd see Sarah Jane bounding down some meadow, with some creature or Dalek in pursuit, to get back to the TARDIS in time.
You know how SV fans feel strongly about Chloe? To put it into perspective, for many Doctor Who fans of a certain era, their support for Sarah Jane is that times 100. She simply rocks, by any parameter.
In this poll, my vote is unwavering. It has to be Sarah Jane. :D

I wasn't the one who voted Martha, though I admit that *gasp* I did like her better than Rose. Rose's crush on the Doctor got seriously annoying to me after a while.
Though Martha had one too, at least the Doctor didn't encourage her.

i thought you would have voted sarah jane! I enjoyed rose's romantic storyline better because it was mutual and not like martha who always appeared to be whining about it when rose really didn't have to. I have to say though my biggest reason to not like martha is that she has to be told to do everything rather than having the balls to do it herself. I loved the 'don't wander off' mantra because rose did wander off and took the risk of being captured and saving the day and sometimes doing both in the same story !

I liked the old series. I liked all the companions you listed. (I don't count Mickey or Capt Jack -- if I did I would also have to count the Brigadier). Some other great companions were Nyssa, Peri, Leela, and Zoe.
But, I voted for Martha. I don't remember the older shows as much as I would like. So I chose a new one. And Rose started to really grate on my nerves.
Next would be Ace or Susan. (Nyssa maybe)

As someone who came to the series with the 9th Doctor, and have only seen episodes with Rose, and Martha (well, one with Sara Jane too) I'm going to have to say Rose. She is simply more interesting to me than Martha.
I've missed plenty of episodes, and won't be picking up the box sets any time soon due to their huge price, but from what I have seen it seems to me that the Rose romantic storyline was much more played down until the very end, whereas the romantic tension with Martha was obvious up front from the first ep. So that aspect of Tylar wasn't too annoying for me.
Plus, it seems to me that the characters somehow related to Rose were much more entertaining than the Martha characters I've seen.

Rose and martha were about equal characters, but I would vote for martha because with rose comes her annoying boyfriend and her annoying chav mum.

Call me naive, but since I have only seen the new series of Doctor Who I would have to go with Rose. Martha is good as well but Rose was a more interesting character whereas Martha just sulked about not seeing her family again and that they'll never know what happened to her whenever she and the doctor were in trouble.

Then go back and watch the shows, first get a firm grip of who the show is about (clue: Doctor who...Not Doctor who and his chav companion...rose. Innit?), go further back and watch the relationships between the doctor and his companions, and then talk to the people who've been watching the shows since you were in nappies, who, with their whole heart disagree that the current incarnations are exceptional. Good in some place, yes, but exceptional compared to the past? Hardly.

Yes the show is called doctor who and the main character and constant is the doctor however with new who its about the doctor and his companion hence having both actors in the titles. Rose was never a chav. I don't see what nappies have to do with anything, I've seen the old episodes. I've seen the dire acting of mary tamm and sarah sutton. I've seen the show concentrate on adventure rather than what the doctor thinks of his companions. I've seen the show follow his adventures rather than his companions adventures like was done in fathers day and fear her. Both eras have their pros and cons but when it comes to companions and rose especially new who is exceptional
Rose was never a chav? It was even referenced in the show (New Earth)! She lived in a flat on a council estate! Billie Piper put a lower class accent on! (listen to her natural accent, she's far more home counties)
It was part of her character. Denying that would be like trying to deny that Time Clash was part of canon. Some may think that, but the writers and producers say otherwise so a fact's a fact, whether it's derogatory about a precious character or not.
To be honest, that was one of the things I did like about Rose, that she wasn't a RADA-trained ponce - like so many of the Doctor's (old) companions (Even though Billie was stage-schooled).

It was referenced in new earth as a joke. Cassandra was a snob and prejudiced against lower classes hence 'i'm a chav'. We aren't meant to agree with her. Being a chav means you wear desgner track suits and lots of jewellery you really can't afford. Living on a council estate and having an accent does not make you a chav
Wearing a designer tracksuit doesn't automatically make you a chav, nor not being able to afford your bling. Look at Michael Caroll.
Rose, as a character, was a chav. I ain't going to argue no more, like. RTD even said that was the sort of character they were trying to build, as an "everyman".
Deny it all you want.

is 'everyman' a chav? He meant that we were meant to see these things through her eyes- the joys of time travel so she reacts as an 'everyman' would.
I found this which should help define a chav- rose only has a mobile phone from this.

I picked Sarah Jane. She has always been my favorite companion. And the fact that she is in a dead heat for 2nd place should speak volumes about what she meant to the show given that three decades have passed since she left the show as a regular!

It all depends on what you mean by Best. Do you mean Best in the way of assitance, best in helping the Doctor understand and retain humanity, best at getting into trouble, best at getting out of trouble, best at keeping up with the Doctor, best at dealing with the adventures, etc, etc., etc.
Although Rose is my favorite Companion for the Doctor I believe the best Companion (overall) has been Jack. Whose Companion (with the Capital C) status is still in dispute, I see. However, I consider him a Companion.
Jack is immortal or at least as long lived as the Doctor. He cannot die so Ten doesn't have to worry about him. Jack loves Ten but he doesn't cleave to him like (I admit) others do. He's been around the galaxy a time or two, knows how to handle himself, can understand the Doctor and relate to him on many levels and is also good in a fight or fixing the Tardis.
For these reasons I voted Jack for Best Companion (despite my love for Rose--I love Jack as well just in a different way).

I voted for Sarah Jane Smith: brilliant, independent, and incredibly loyal to the Doctor. Someone who kinda began as being really annoying (i've just seen the Time Warrior - good story, but my god was SJS SO full of herself back then!), but mellowed out over time and grew to become really popular.
Hmmm...now who on earth does that remind me of?
At least i didnt vote for donna haha

I'm glad someone besides me remembered Jo. Personally, I voted for Sarah Jane. Much more plucky than Rose, although the two of them together in "School Reunion" was priceless.
In all fairness though, from the character's standpoint, I don't think any companion has meant as much to the Doctor as Rose. I'll leave the door open for River Song though. Something tells me that things could get very interesting there.

I only know the "new" companion and SJS because of her part in the 2005 series. I have to say I like them all. Okay, Martha not so much. But I can't decide between Rose and Donna. I like the romantic aspect between the doctor and Rose. But Donna was absolutley great. I will miss her.
And Martha ... it's not that I don't like. But all the crying and her hopless love for the doctor was just annoying. And a guess, she wasn't so much fun as Rose and Donna.

Sarah Jane. How many other characters are so awesome as to have had two spinoffs dedicated to them?
These polls should really have options for Rose (Never watched old series) Martha (Never watched old series) and Donna (Never watched old series) because I get the distinct feeling that half the people voting for Rose are doing so because she's better than Martha and Donna (although I'd dispute that, Donna was fairly good too), rather than because she's the best companion overall.

I voted for Martha, but I'm kind of biased as she was MY companion, i.e. the companion when I first started watching. I disagree with a previous comment which said that Martha had to be told what to do all the time, I think Martha was just as resourceful and quick thinking as Rose. I'm not trying to start a Rose vs Martha war here, really I'm not. Both characters had different qualities that made them useful companions. I liked Rose, really I did, but I'm not as fond of her as others are, which is probably because she was, for so many people, THEIR companion. I'll openly admit to finding Donna hilarious, which is strange because I have seen Catherine Tate's show many times and never laughed once.
Yes, I got into the show through new who, but I have began to go back and watch older episodes (I personally wouldn't mind seeing a return to the old serial format). Old companions I've seen so far are Susan, Ian, Barbara, Harry, Sarah Jane, Adric, Nyssa and Teagan. If I put aside my Martha bias, Sarah Jane is probably the best companion. I also liked Harry alot, found him quite funny ('Ark In Space' was the first classic episode I saw). Susan got on my nerves because she was just moaning all the time. I'm also really annoyed by Teagan, and I don't know why.
Also, and this is completely off topic, but as someone who has recently watched some episodes from his era, do any other 'Classic Who' fans think the Fifth Doctor was seriously underrated?

Martha Jones.
Smart, sassy and not completely self involved. She also was the only one to beat the need to have her life defined by the man in it. Granted, she was just as enamored with the Doctor, but she took her knowledge of what she learned and applied it to where it would serve her best.
Rose holds a special place in my heart, but she tended to be a bit Me-dramatic. Things had to pertain to her- her mother, her father, her everything. Granted they were excellent episodes, but looking past you own nose helps greatly.
Martha risked everything in Torchwood, at great personal risk to herself, just because it was the right thing to do.

I'm reading Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale at the moment (which I thoroughly recommend) and in it, RTD writes this about the companions in New Who:
Rose is open, honest, heartfelt, to the point of being selfish, wonderfully selfish. Martha is clever, calm, but rarely says what she's really thinking. Donna is blunt, precise, unfiltered, but with a big heart beneath all the banter. But we come back to what I was saying ages ago about turning characters. If Rose can be so selfish, then her finest moments will come when she's selfless. If Martha keeps quiet, then her moments of revelation - like her goodbye to the Doctor in Last of the Timelords, or stuck with Milo and Cheen in Gridlock - make her fly. Donna is magnificently self-centred - not selfish, but she pivots everything around herself, as we all do - so when she opens up and hears the Ood song, or begs for Caecilius' family to be saved, then she's wonderful.
Or...
Rose is annoying, to the point of turning the Doctor/Companion relationship into a sickly-sweet fanfic. Martha is clever, calm, but a bit boring and never quite fitted in. Donna is blunt, precise and the most god-awful character ever to have hit Who in all of its 45 years.
;)
Bring back Tegan and Turlough, all is forgiven. (But not it's bad enough for Mel and Adric)

I selected Rose but I also loved Donna in season four also. I could relate to Rose and Donna best, loved their reactions to seeing new places and wanting to achieve more out of a life they were dissatisfied with and they were not perfect but they did learn from their experiences. Just like me! lol
Martha I thought I would like as she was more intellectual and whereas I should have related more to her strangely it didn't happen. It was almost like watching two Doctors at times and perhaps it was the writers forcing another companion 'crush' on the doctor. I was just glad to see her go and to see Donna return as I loved her in the Runaway Bride.
As for the old series and without admitting my age, it has been a LONG time  since I've watched these old shows, I would say that Sarah Jane and Tegan were possibly my favourites of that time.

I voted Rose because I'm a hopeless romantic plus Billie and David had awesome chemistry. Donna was a close second, Catherine and David's comic timing was spot on, she was by far the funniest companion.

I voted Captain Jack. Mickey is classed as an official companion (I didnt know this fact until I watched Doctor Who with the invision commentary ... ohmygosh invision commentary is so darn cool, I dont know why they dont do all commentary as invision) so, if guys are classed as companions then this means Jack is a companion so, I voted for him lol because he's cool and useful at the same time.
Some people dont seem to like Martha but, I think she's cool. There's a BBC audio book *Martha's Story* that basically tells the story of what Martha does in the year that she travels the Earth saving The Doctor and the planet from the Toclafene (sp?) and The Master.
I also like Sarah Jane Smith. I've only seen the first season of SJA but, she kicks some serious derriere. She was cool in the Doctor Who episode with David Tennant and SJA is a neat show, too. I dont remember the original shows where she was Companion to John Pertwee and then Tom Baker but, I've seen clips of different episodes from those shows on the SJA DVD extra features.
If the poll had been multiple choice I would have likely chosen more than one person but, I'm biased so in the end I chose Captain Jack lol
Rats ... I forgot to say I just love the fact they brought back K9, he's the coolest dog of all time. I dont know if he can be classed as a Companion but, he sure is a faithful friend and loyal companion and, he helps save the day multiple times.

Sarah Jane kicks derriere in just about everything she's ever appeared in. Classic Who, K9 and Company, NuWho and now her own show.
If they were going to bring back any companion from the classic series, I'm glad it was her.

I voted Rose because I'm a hopeless romantic
I don't know, I never liked the Doctor/Rose romantic stuff. Not just because I'm a guy, I just didn't find it very believable. I mean, in Series 1 I think there is maybe ONE hint that Rose likes him, and its when she gets a bit jealous of Lynda (with a 'Y') in The Parting of the Ways. Nothing from the Doctor, apart from maybe when he tells her she looks beautiful in The Unquiet Dead. Then in Series 2, they are suddenly in love with each other?
I'm not bothered by romance stories is shows like this, as long as they're done right. But we were never shown any reasons why The Doctor fell in love with Rose. He just was, apparantly.
Plus, if you're gonna do a romantic storyline in a show like this, put a Doctor Who spin on it. They got it right the second time, with River Song in Silence in the Library.
