The best way to explain if Nathan lives would be to say that the regenerative powers that Pete has can work on anyone he is in physical contact with.

It seems pretty reasonable given the fact that nearly every other power has worked that way this series.

I dont think that is such a far fetched idea. The rules on these powers could be very complicated and could change from power to power or person to person depending on how that persons genetics could work with that specific power. An example would be when Peter made Claire invisble, it worked on her, but maybe if he tried it on Hiro it wouldnt. Who knows!
