This episode stinks! This episode has 25 minutes to redeem itself. *SNORE*
Anyone actually enjoying this episode?
They're trying to do something different, and I think it's working.
Not everyone likes the feel of black & white movies, so it's a bit of a risk.
But hey, I'm enjoying it! :)

They should have done the throwback episode earlier in the season. With the season finale approaching soon they could have really done more to advance the bigger picture.

The one redeeming item so far is the retro shot and nod to The Adventures of Superman outside the Daily Planet plaque, or words that we had seen many times in the original.

I don't see what is so bad about it. I think it's very well done. It sort of reminds me of the Angel episodes where Angel has flashbacks to the 50s when he lived in the Hyperion Hotel.

It was a decent episode. It redeemed itself at the end. I'm not a fan of old black and white movies at all so that has something to do with my not being exactly thrilled with the dream stuff. Still, it was well done and better than I expected.

I thought the episode was pretty good. I'm not really sure why there is so much complaint about this episode. The flashbacks that were used in the 1940s helped set the stage for whats going on in the present. It all made sense. It furthered the main plots, the love triangle, and 33.1/Lex building an army.
So I enjoyed the episode. It was a good episode.
Derrickray
05-03-2007, 08:07 PM
It had nothing to do with the style. The story was lame and it didn't do much for the "realtime" story.
They had to rush a lot of info in the last 10 minutes to advance the main story arc and it didn't make much sense.

I would have loved the Noir style had it been a better story.
Jimmy thumped in the head and dreamed it all?
Uh-Uh.
Ultra lame, do the writers actually get paid for this?
The actors did the usual supurb job, but they didn't have much to work with.
I know some of the K-site members could crank out a script a thousand times better than that filler.

Yes, its a step away from the normal freak of the week/"Lana is in danger! Quick to the Daily Planet to figure out whats going on!" That's all fine, but it gets tiresome after awhile.

The 1940's was all style little substance. I couldn't get into the plot because it didn't start from the beginning. The plot was already ongoing with short glimpses of it through Jimmy's eyes.
It's like watching a movie that already started.
It just wasn't as interesting as I thougth it would be.
The cast looked amazing in the 1940's. That's about it.

The main plot did not even advance at all other than Lana telling Chloe what the viewers already knew. This episode was only made as a tribute to Olsen for his last episode.

IMHO this was a what I would call a "change up" episode for "Smallville'. For the most part, I thought it was light-hearted and rather funny story which was enjoyable for this type of episode. Aaron Ashmore, with the way his hair was styled and his face, reminded me of Ritchie Cunningham from the 'Happy Days' series.
I find it incredibly difficult to take the Jimmy Olson of Smallville seriously for two reasons:
1. Jimmy Olson, for the most part, has served as a comic relief with the Superman saga. I know this is Smallville so the Superman history is many times put aside in this reinterpretation that is directed to teenagers and young adults. However, when I look at Mr. Ashmore's teenage face (IMHO), his somewhat gangly physical build, the histrionic outbursts that Jimmy has in the series, and the Ritchie Cunningham haircut (in 'Noir') I consistently chuckle when he appears. I believe he fits the mold of the past goofy and dorky incarnations of Jimmy Olson. I realize that many viewers may not agree with my assessment, and that is fine with me.
2. Due to the points I made in #1, even when Jimmy is trying to be presented as a serious character (heroic or otherwise), I find myself smiling. To me his voice sounds as if it is in the tenor range and further enhances what I would describe as his featherweight personna.
Anyway, it is nice to see a relationship on Smallville that isn't loaded with angst, secrets, and deception that IMO seems to be the trademark of so many 'romantic' relationships in Smallville, and that clearly was on display tonight between Jimmy and Chloe. Unfortunately, even though I am a huge Chloe fan, I find Chloe's relationship with Jimmy makes her appear more of a 'featherweight' as well.
Overall, I enjoyed the episode for what it was, although a steady diet of this kind of plot line would lead me to believe that 'Smallville' has become a sit-com.

*deep breath* where can I begin? I've got so many mixed feelings over this eppy that I don't know I just don't.
I loved:
The 40's style, the clothes, the hair, even the way Chloe talked was awesome
The Car chase was hilarious OMG mixing old fotage w/ the present- priceless
I hated:
Lana getting shot again, forget clark kent... Lana deserves the title of Woman of Steel. Kill her already!
Can anyone tell me, what does the BW story has to do with the RW story?????
not a conection, NOTHING! Goodness sake
this Ares project thing is driving me insane I've lost the plot and have no idea what is it, yes yes a project involving 33.1 blah blah blah and what else??
they did a great BW short film if we can call it that and Clark is MIA? how can they do that to me? Clark looks hot in Technicolor, BW and Cepia but they didn't give me the chance to enjoy him, why Jimmy? he's the one dreaming- yes- but COME ONE!!
WHERE THE HELL IS CLARK?
ok now I feel better, well not really..

It isn't Sepia. It's monochrome. Sepia is more of a brownish hue, like really old pictures from the late 1800s.

Okay, I was all set to love this episode, but so much of it was bad, I almost cried.
(1) Since when does Chloe blow off work to have a date at her workplace? Hmmm. Not very professional. She's not going to get a promotion like that.
(2) Lana is shot. Ugh! Twice! She does deserve the woman of steel title! Enough already. I'm surprised the poor girl can even walk!
(3) Chloe was rude to Jimmy.
(4) Clark blamed himself. Ugh! Not again.
(5) Chloe was Jimmy's secretary! How's that? (not to mention she was wrong about Clark's involvement. And she's never wrong about that!)
(6) Jimmy is persuaded by the magic of Lana's beauty to commit murder! Can anyone resist her? I guess not. Miserable.
(7) Lex kissing Lois was SO unbelievable. There were no sparks there.
(8) Chloe calls Clark instead of 911 when someone had been shot! Did she know the guy was dead? If not, that was very negilgent! Shouldn't she have called 911 too?
(9) Clark swoops in to save Chloe and then just leaves--whatever. Seemed like a plot twist thrown in merely to please the Chlarkers. We deserve better.
(10) Clark grabbed Chloe hysterically and hurt her. Wtf?
(11) Lastly, I am so tired of everyone lying to everyone else "for their own protection." It's so old and now Clark is being lied to for this reason? Lame!
On the plus side:
(1) The Clana kiss was hot. Tom knows what he's doing.
(2) Clark mopping the coffee off Chloe's chest--too cute.
(3) Jimmy was actually right about something for once.
(4) Clark regretted falling for Lana and saw the error of his ways.
(5) Lois was hot.
I loved the episode! I sooo missed the good old SV humor :)

I mean, there are just 2 episodes remaining for the season finale and they come up with this?? come on! this should have been placed as episode number 9... instead of the failure of subterranean.

This episode does suck. Lana's just keeping secrets to stall the season as far as they can, because they have no other story. Finale :Clark turns on Lionel, which if his father was alive he wouldve done months ago. Noir is like just half and episode, they just stalled with the pathetic Jimmy Dream seq.
Before that Nemesis was a half episode also. Nothing was resolved Lana found out she was experimented on,and does nothing because the creators have NOTHING for the finale so they paln to cram all that in one ep like the did in the crappy Vessel. Lex kidnaps Chloe in Freak, then Kidnaps her AGAIN in Progeny and THREATENS TO KILL HER, but Clark does nothing based on the mental fart that it would make Lex hurt Lana. Then BDA has the audacity to suggest that LEX isnt so bad maybe in NEMESIS( more stalling). They are going to amatuerishly cram allthe plot threads into the finale and make a POOR Cliffhanger like Vessel. Beeman,Al and Miles dont direct any more so the execution of the finale will suck , be jubbled and mismanaged.
Its a Shame too, because the season really shaped up after the disappointing ZOD and the annoying Lana lex wedding,a bad joke taken too far.

I only really liked when lana got shot, when lex got shot, and all the chlark moments in this epiosde. I really like the part when chloe fell and clark caught her. (Clark really has feeling for chloe) HE was very happy when he saved her but he was also sad when jimmy got a kiss from chloe. Poor Clark maybe if you stop having all these emotional mood swings then maybe you and chloe can hook up after all.

When I first saw the black and white I thought- yes! the dream B&W! Then Chloe spoke with that- er, dialogue and it plummetted from there.
The only thing that dream contributed was why Lana had a cigerrette case on her.
Personally, I think the dream sequence should have tied to the actual plotline of the season insted of some ramdomn Lex- Lois love affair which seemed to just be to get Lois in front of the camera.
Although that 'get in line' comment from Clark was.... intriquing. What did you think?
my full conclusion is in the Loved it? Hated it? thread.....
i liked the episode. mainly for its originality.
one thing i didn't mention was, i think this episode would have been appreciated more if the B&W stuff didn't happen just after Lana got shot. That was kind of a big moment and maybe this was the wrong sort of episode to have this B&W story....not to say it wasn't enjoyable.
Not much was revealed, Clark and Lex both now know Lionel is upto no good....and Chloe is keeping another secret(big surprise)
i enjoyed it.
P.s sorry if im repeating things already said, i like to make my opinions without bias....so i haven't read other ppl's views yet.

LOL That review was awesome.
Have you ever wondered what was going on in Jimmy Olsen's mind? We didn't think so.
...an unknown assailant knocks Jimmy unconscious. But, and this is the kicker, instead of continuing with this intriguing storyline, we'll just spend about thirty minutes of the episode in Jimmy's mind. Then, when the thirty minutes have passed and our actors have finished play-acting in 1940s film noir; we'll cut back to the story and cram 42 minutes of plot into the final ten minutes of the episode..
one of the more pointless episodes of Smallville in recent memory
First and foremost, there are only a handful of episodes left in the season; it's simply not the right time to be trying something experimental
As it stands, forcing an episode's worth of exposition and development into the final ten minutes is a horrible way to tell a story.
They gave it 2/10. Maybe AL Miles should take notes.
