Hi am new to watching Smallville. I always heard about this show. Well I've been watching for the last one to two months and I am HOOKED!!
Amazing show. The action, subplots, character depth, casting and acting are top notch.
Anyhow my local tv station is running episodes from season four, I just watched "Recruit" last night.
Is season 4 one of the best, better, or (amazing if true) below the other seasons in Smallville?

S4 is in my opinion the most unique season; it deals with magic, witchcraft, football, finding krytonian stones and a random new character that only lasted for that season...it was a strong season though w/ eps like run, transference, scare, pariah, onyx, sacred, blank and others...there were also some weak eps like spell, bound, ageless...again this season was just different, but overall pretty great.

Season 4 has some of the show's best episodes. It also has some of it's worst. None of the seasons are "bad", so bearing that in mind I'd put them in this order
Season 6
Season 5
Season 3
Season 4
Season 1
Season 2

Season Four is actually pretty darn good, despite what others may say about it. It does contain some of the series best episodes like Crusade, Run, Transference, Unsafe, Pariah, Onyx, Blank, and Commencement. Also, if one likes comedy, watch the episode Spell. Don't think too heavily about what's going on, just sit back and have a blast.

I have to say that season 4 is definitely in the top 2. But I definitely think season 4 is better then season 6 but not 5 because so much happened and there was better action in season 4 and season 5
Season 5
Season 4
Season 6
For the rest I don't know

I love season four, but the arc really isn't very good. Its completely inconsistent and structurally weak.
But this season has some of the best episodes of series, and season 4 is generally highly underrated. It's also the most fun.
Best -
Season 5
Season 6
Season 4
Season 1
Season 2
Season 3

season 4 is like candy - sometimes you're just in the mood for something unnecessary b/c it's fun, but take it in small doses b/c too much can give you a canker sore. watch a couple episodes, but the season is so hit or miss w/ good and bad ones (and ridiculous ones that are hilarious -spell) that it can easily become tiring after 3 or 4 in a row (which is how i always watch smallville). so different from the other seasons, imo.

Season 4 was when the writing really started to go down. But, here's the thing. It was still at the point where it was good enough to keep me somewhat happy. The season was fun. Lois was introduced. I loved all the random elements that pulled the season together.
Not my favorite season, but I really enjoyed it.

Seasons 1-4 were the show at it's peak. Season 4 was definitely different, and it began the downfall, but to be fair, it couldn't be easy to beat Season 3 (which they wanted something "fun" after that awesome season). I don't really count 4 as a season, and if I do, it's a transitional season at that. It still surprises me when Seasons 5 and 6 are considered better, when at least the stones arc tried to make sense and stick to the concept of the show.

Here's my take on the strength of Smallville seasons, for what it's worth. Bear with my explanation because the most significant year turns out to be a complete contradiction to itself and I won't get into too much detail about what I mean by that since you are a new viewer. However, you will see what I mean rather than have it spoiled. With that said, here are my rankings from best to worst:
1) Season 5 ( 3/4 of the way thru - first 15 episodes)- Hands down absolute best, truly "everything you've ever wanted to see" which was the networks catch phrase for the show at that time
2) Season 3- Everyone steps up their respective games, the Luthors who are awesome are a focal point and Clark gets more and more insight to his heritage
3) Season 6- Excellent recovery from the fallout of the end of Season 5, Clark and Lana both hit their stride as actors/characters
4) Season 2- More interesting plotlines and character development across the board, strong Kent family moments shape CK's moral code
5) Season 7 (but the jury is still out, this could potentially get as high as 3rd or drop a few notches depending on how much the Goughlars screw with continuity/canon)- Solid so far, littered with interesting guest appearences..most of which are fun
6) Season 4- Began and ended on some of the strongest notes in the series, kind of wishy washy inbetween...the main plot line (stones/Isobel) was kind of out there and Jason didn't bring much value as a recurring character. One strong point of note...Chloe emerged as a significant character from the whiny clinger (with obvious acting abilities though) she was up to that point.
7) Season 1- Outside of the excitement of its promise as a new telling of the Superman story, the pilot and finale...had weak redundant plots (FOTW) and the two leads (Tom and Kristin) were inexperienced and weak acting ensued
8) Season 5 (Episodes 16-22)- Complete reversal of a DOMINANT season up to that point mainly centered around a lightswitching relationship and a contrived, almost rushed conclusion to the year's villan showndown...It is widely believed that TPTB actually pushed SV to the backburner to concentrate on a pilot they created to pursue another iconic DC comic series
