Wow! I thought that when Clark said this to Chloe, the writers were trying to give us insight into the impossibility of Clana. No love should make you give up your purpose in life! One may feel like that, but Clark knows that he needs to walk away. To save her by not being with her. The most unselfish kind of love - as opposed to Lex's version which will put her in danger sooner or later! That's why Clark said to Lana that he 'woke up' when he gave her the ring, instead of saying that that was when he kissed her for the first time!

omg i already understood the first part, but i just got the second! that makes so much sense!
Not to mention that if he would have chosen to be with Lana, he wouldn't have been able to anyway, because the entire human race would have been enslaved....

Yeah that crossed my mind too. At least I hope so. Also, did you notice at the end after Lex came in, Lana siad "We were just saying good-bye".? I took that to have a much more symbolic meaning than just "bye - see ya later". Maybe they can both admit it's over.

WOW...yeah there was ALOT of foreshadowing tonight. Yeah he still "loves" her...but esp after the Clana talk in the dream where Lana tells Clark if he's really an alien, shes sleeping w his enemy, pregnant w the guys child, and CLark is responsible for taking innocent peoples lives and all this negative stuff about him....and she told him his destiny isnt to be a superhero...so even tho Clark loves Lana, hes realizing Clana just cant be.....and he chose to run after Chloe rather than stay with Lana in the Talon, after he becomes aware (thanks to Chloe) that Lana was his "kryptonite".

I got the impression that the Zoner was just making that stuff up to get Clark to submit.

Yes. And Clark knows this be he still craves normality, which Lana represents to him for some unknown reason. That she would expect your constant attetion and want you to give up what you are for her comfort and worship marks her as a nasty self-centered witch whom no man with any self-respect would want. It made no sense for him to want her knowing what she really is.

I was going to give it all up... to be with Lana!
Did you chloe's face when he said that.
I mean clark at least knows that lana is a bigger risk than kryptonite ever could be.
Where is superman when you need him?
Thought he accepted his destiny?
Would superman give it all up for one person?

I don't think the zoner was really making all of it up. on some level that had to be clark's mind taking part, imo, as evidenced by the knowledge of his past that the zoner wouldn't have. maybe he read clarks mind, but i thought that it was still representative of Clark's true feelings somewhat, because of how dialogue with chloe played. out.

I was waiting for him to take that next step, logically. To say, "If I have to give up who I am to be with her... I just can't do that. No matter how I feel."
Be a man, Clark! Stop letting your emotions throw you around, you dope!
This *should* be the turning point in Clark's journey (one of many "turning points," I know). When he realizes that the big question he faces is whether or not he is willing to give up a normal life of his own to seek the greater good of the world. This is the moment when he should be deciding to BE super. To step outside of himself, instead of "waiting for trouble to reach his doorstep."
Not to put too fine a point on it: This episode encapsulates the entire series for me. Clark chooses between his true identity, the stand-alone hero from Krypton, or his alternate identity, normal guy and Lana-chaser.

Lana has never asked Clark to give up who he is. She doesn't even know who he is because he hasn't told her yet. Give the girl credit, she is good in heart and mind. She doesn't know what Lex is all about, all she sees is the side Lex wants her to see.

I wish the Zoner screwed Clark's brains out. That way the moron could forever live in La-La Land with his obsession. The End.

Clark will be torn between Lana and his destiny. And this episode hinted at the conflict he will face by the end of the series.

Wow! Thanks for all the great and insightful responses!
I also thought that in the episode "Hidden" as Lana was talking to the unconscious Clark before he died, she said that she knew this day would come and that Clark couldn't stop from trying to save the world! Sounding as if she couldn't handle that kind of a relationship! It's sad.... Clana isn't meant to be ..... Just like Joe wasn't meant to be with Louise... it got her killed. And in Lexmas, being with Lex got her killed. Both of these relationships are not
'meant to be'.

I thought they were revisiting Clana yet again, but I like your interpretation much, much better. I'll have to re-watch the epi with that theory in mind and I might like it a lot more. :)

In true Smallville style, this episode's relationship attitude was highly ambivalent and, imo, open to lots of different interpretations.
I do think that you're take on Clark's Lana comments are insightful and ultimately correct, DestinyFan, but much as we believe AlMiles have already demonstrated Clana's incompatability, I think they are going to go for another dive into Clana's murky and shark-infested depths.
The look back at the end that Lana gives and the Crimson trailer w/ Kal reawakening the Clana dead, indicate to me a latter half of this season devoted to the Clexana.

If you are to believe intereviews and spoilers, Gough/Miles are bringing the Clexana triangle back.
God knows why?
Although, I like the interpretations that this could be a turning point and Clark will start working towards his destiny a whole lot better than I am still Clark Kent trying to decide after 5.5 years Lana or the world...Lana or the world?
What would superman choose, is very right, indeed?

Clearly the Lex/Lana relationship will come to a bad end. And Clark will be involved in the fallout. So will he act on his feelings then?
