On Conan last night, KK said that Canadians and Americans act differently in theaters...just wondered if that's true, or just the experience she's had...

She said that "in a theater in America, people tend to be really gung-ho and they'll get into a movie and they'll cheer for characters and they'll laugh really loud. And in Canada, we kind of just sit and watch and we're pretty chilled out and mellow and sometimes someone'll laugh..."

She's described BC theaters EXACTLY!!! (though i can't speak for the rest of Canada)...LOL in Vancouver, we all just keep our emotions quietly to ourselves and are only loud enough for our neighbours to hear (except for the ONE cheery bloke in the back, who roars outloud (hummm...an American perhaps?). Seriously, the only movie I EVER saw where people were "gung-ho" was the premier night for one of the Star Wars fics!

Sooo...Are American movie-goers REALLY that "gung-ho"??? 'Cause that would be fun :) :)

Just wondering... :D :D :D

)Yup..... we're really "gung ho" about it.... People hella cheer for most movies....even the bad ones (when they're over:p) yup people are pretty cheery and some even shout at the screen saying "No don't go in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" At that point i throw popcorn at them ;)

Yeah, I can't disagree with what KK said. It's actually one of the reasons why I prefer to "illegal" movies and enjoy them in the comfort of my own home and audio equipment.

I just can't put up with these teens yelling at the screen, or tossing crap at the screen, or being very stupid, quite frankly.

Piracy works wonders. :D

British cinemas are the same as the Canadian, we don't make much noise in the movie, mainly because we want to be able to hear what happens next instead of some loud mouth's attitude problem!

We did once get some kids shining laser pens on the screen during a good movie. If I'd know who they were I'd have clouted them for ruining everyone elses fun.

Ahh, I remember the chaos that fad caused to us moviegoers. I remember tossing popcorn on a kid once because of it.

Hee, when I'm with my friends we make loud comments during the previews :p Otherwise people only really laugh when something is funny. Once when we saw Final Destination 2, there was this huge car crash scene half-way through the movie and everything was quiet, and I said "Whoa." kind of loudly by accident and some people laughed at me :p

I'm sorry but I wish US theaters were more like Canadian/British theaters...

When the lights go down and the previews start, time to "SHUT UP!" I mean really, what is so damn important that can't wait until 2 hour later? If you want to BS, then go to the lobby and hang out there!

Whispering also annoys me, I guess I have super hearing like Clark because I can hear people whisper 10 rows behind me...sorry, but when I pay eight bucks to see a flick, I'd expect no noise except from the film.

Frankly I think anything up to the opening credits is fair game, but here in the UK we get movie trailers and then more ads. But if you talk during my movie expect me to come right up to your face and tell you to SHUT UP. Cinema isn't cheap in London.

So KK was right on! LOL

Smlvlchk, Fud's right, you'd soooooo get the evil eye from us Canadians! LOLOLOL Fics here are watched quietly! Even in the funniest scenes, people laugh for like a second, then they shut up! And definitely NO cheering!! LOLOLOL And people stop talking AS SOON as the previews start! LOL and noooo whispering! LOL (except for that one person in the back...humm...again, maybe American? LOL)

Moviegoers in New Zealand and Australia are like Canadians too - very mellow (saw lots of fics there)!! LOL Now i wanna see a fic in the States to experience this whole "gung-ho" thing. Though I guess it may get on my nerves 'cause i'm a mellow Canadian and like to just sit and watch the fic, laughing and keeping my cheers silently to myself :p :p LOLOLOL

Yeah, when i was in London 8 yrs ago i was gonna see a fic, and I think it was like $18 pounds...which was like $36Cdn...I ALMOST DIED 'cause they were only something like $8 here at the time (I don't think i'm exaggerating, but it is possible...i know I almost keeled over from SHOCK though)!! I LOVE movies...but no 2h movie's worth THAT much!! LOL

i cant imagine NOT laughing for more than FIVE minutes during a funny part! that would totally go against ALL i believe in!!!! i better not move to Canada!

ETA: youve never seen anyone make out in a movie!?!?! wow, you must be in canada!

okay, my story about getting kicked out of the movie theater

so i went to ROTK (just to make you happy fudrom:p) for the second time, this time i didnt hide under the blanket. i was on the egde of my seat and made a point of making EVERY wise crack that came to mind (anyone who knows me can affirm this!!) and im actually pretty good at it! so we're about half way through this incredibly long 3 hour movie and the audience is starting to get real annoyed with me, theyve been throwing popcorn and red hots at me for the last hour. finally, a security personnel comes up and escorts me out of the theater. he says stuf like, "young lady, this is the first and last time that im gonna warn you. we do not like people making the audience unsettled. please just sit tight and enjoy the moive or we will kick you out." i dont really remember what he was saying because the whole time im thinking "wow your hot". so i go and sit back down and about a half hour later i cant contain myself anymore. so i start talking with caleb again, well rather im talking and hes trying to cover my mouth. and finally, right as frodo is deciding to throw the ring in, i jump up and scream "c'mon frodo! throw the damn ring into the frickin fire!" and everyone around me jumps clear out of their seats and starts screaming!!!!! the security guy comes in and takes me out, with my hands behind my back. he escorts me to the door and says "dont come back" mi like, "your hot" and then caleb follows me out! he was laughing so hard! oh lord, that was the best night of my life! lol so whatd ya think?

I sooo can't belive YOU would do that!! Oh Smlvlchk! Where's my lil quiet picture of you! LOL No wonder you could do Blackjack so well!! LOLOLOLOL You're just like those rowdy characters!

I'm actually kind of disappointed in generalized statements. Everyone is their own individual. And different movie genres often cause people to make comments. Also if someone is seeing a movie for the third time they may feel compelled to make more/different comments than they did the first time. It all often depends on the movie, time, place, and atmosphere.

TWCK
01-25-2004, 02:26 PM
Canadian theatres are too quiet. There's the normal laughs and stuff, but c'mon people, we don't even APPLAUD at the end of the movie!!! I like gung-ho style

01-25-2004, 02:38 PM
THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE! If people want to make commentaries or BS or whatever, get the hell out and let other people enjoy the damn movie! rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sorry but I've said before, I didn't spend 8 or 16 or 30 (concessions & a date :D ) to listen to people yakking!

Yup, i'm with Fud...i think i like our quiet lil theaters! I always wanna turn around and say "shhhhhhhhhhhh" if there's a lone dude in the back doing some gabbing! I find it hard to watch the movie with the distraction of the chitter chatter! LOL Guess i'd find American theaters kinda hard to take! LOL

Now americans don't SERIOUSLY applaud at the end of a movie, right??? I mean, i can see it happening on OPENING night for movies like Star Wars or LOTR...but that's it! LOLOLOL Opening night of one of the Star Wars fics was the one and only time i've ever seen people applause here...and that was a room full of Star Wars fanatics! LOL (and no, i'm not one...really like the movies, but would NOT have stood in line for 2 days to buy a ticket! NO WAY!! )

01-25-2004, 02:51 PM
People that wait 2 days, weeks or months for a movie to come out are bums, have no job and no life...so they get their name in the media...big deal...don't you have anything better to do?

I had to wait 2 weeks before seeing Star Wars Special Edition but I didn't mind the wait...

Giz, generally people don't applaud at the end except for movies you mentioned, even then it's only when the theater is packed and in the first week or so of its release...

Gizmo
01-25-2004, 03:30 PM
And going to movies during the first few weeks is NO FUN!! I hate packed theaters! If i really wanna see a popular movie when it first comes out, i'll go to a matinee...and bonus, it's wayyy cheaper too! :D :D

i will laugh pretty loud if there is a really funny part, but what i absolutely hate is when people talk on their cell phones during a movie or a cell phone goes off and the person who it belongs to is to stupid to know that it is their's and it keeps ringing and ringing and i just want to say, "Hey moron, put a lid on your phone." God that gets me.

and i dont get why people clap when a movie is over and during a movie. when i saw Star Wars Attack of the Clones everyone was clapping when Yoda started fighting Dooku.

Okay, I wasn't going to post here, but this conversation is making me cranky, so I have to throw in my two cents.

If you are going to a film, be quiet. Don't take your young children, your cell phone, your beeper, your GameBoy, or yourself if you can't be quiet and respectful. Some people (like myself) don't get to movies very often, and don't appreciate having the film being ruined by some punk. I can understand small outbursts (such as a cheer, small yelp, or whispered question during a particularly engaging or confusing scene) but to constantly talk, make out, or allow disturbances such as a ringing phone or crying child is uncalled for and completely inappropriate.
Being obnoxious during a movie isn't cool or funny -- it's disrespectful, rude, and most importantly, immature. And even if you've seen the film several times, the people around you may not have, and they deserve the same courtesy as you deserve during your first viewing of the film. I get just as annoyed with Frodo's slowness and Sam's loquaciousness as everyone else -- but I keep it inside in case someone else in the theater is viewing it for the first time.

As for clapping at the end of a film -- for me, it's professional courtesy, the acknowledgement of a job well done by fellow performers. And being where I am, I never know who else is in the theater. I've met several people in my local theater who were either directly involved with the film being shown or know someone who was, and can pass that courtesy on to them. People involved with a film can spend months or even years making a film -- me clapping to show my appreciation, whether the people involved are present or not -- is a way of saying "thank you," if only in spirit. But again -- professional courtesy.

Ergh. If you want to talk through a movie, wait until it comes out on DVD, sit in your own house and blab over it to your heart's content. Don't ruin my evening out with your rudeness.

The theater has to recoup their losses somehow. Even at $8 a person the theater makes very little profit on ticket sales. Films don't come cheap.

Of course, if a few of the actors would take pay cuts....

Boy ain't that the truth. Still they pay employees that stand around doing nothing 90% of the time, or watch the flick with the audience, or BS with other employees...plus I understand many of them don't pay a dime to see movies at all...

Theaters that gouge for snack items and drinks also tick me off, because many of them now will kick you out if you bring in outside items!

The price of one ticket doesn't cover the amount the theater pays in electricity to run the film, the equipment the film is run on, the projectionist, and the other incidental employees the theater has, such as ushers, custodians, ticket takers, and so on, nor does it cover the cost of the film itself.

Man, I've gotten kicked outta a movie soooooo many times, lesse a couple for making out, a crap load for sneaking into other movies, twice for starting fights...(don't ask), once for starting a big riot in the theatre (let's just say not my most memorable moment), and only once for being obnoxious.

MadCow
01-26-2004, 03:44 AM
I'm kind of fortunate that I don't live anywhere near smlvlchk ;) ot WJB1 ;) but maybe if you can let everyone know when you're off to the movies and the rest of us can go elsewhere ;)

I'm not really joking, it costs £10.00 to go a decent cinema (£8.00 for a non decent one) and that's without the luxury of sweets and drinks and I get really p.o'd when I can't concentrate on the interesting bit at the end of Matrix Reloaded (it happened twice) because someone at the back has ADD. It's not a case of living a little, I have other activities which take care of that.

I'm not big on fighting, I'm not big on stealing, I'm not big on spoiling everybody elses day, does that make me a square?

I'm an angel when it comes to going to the cinema. Though it's never cost as much as £10. Usually £6.50 ($12).

I always behave myself and try to enjoy the movie. I must have super hearing too, because I can always hear some selfish idiot nattering away somewhere in the room. If they're close I give them the patented evil stare until they get the hint. The stare works best if my eyes are quite pale (my eyes change colour) and it creeps them out.

I have to admit I have put my feet up on the back of the seat in front on occasion, but not if anyone's sitting in it.

I don't think I'd be able to stand being in an American cinema. If I miss sections of a movie because of loud yapping and cheering, I'd ask for that portion of my money back.

SMLVLFAN89

Haha! Made me think of something we learned in class today. We were asked why we, as students/employees, always rate ourselves as low on performance reviews, and why we are sometimes overly needlessly polite...the answer...BECAUSE WE'RE CANADIAN! LOLOL Yup, that was the classes response! Hee hee! Can't say if it's true or not, but it reminded me of this thread too!

Ok joining the conversation eventhough I'm not American nor Canadian - in Belgium people don't shout/laugh out loud in theatres but we sometimes chuckle or when it's a scary movie you can occasionally hear girls squeek but that's all really.
I think we don't find it very polite should you make a lot of noise during a movie - and turning off your mobile/cell phone before the movie starts is IMO also a very polite thing to do.

smlvlchk
03-24-2004, 12:18 PM
ya they require you to do that. i never talk on a cell phone...but i still end up being a total dumbass during the movie. did you read through this thread?

I dont know what theaters you other Americans are going to but I have never gone to a movie where it was loud and people were all rude and talkitive and Ive lived in South Carollina, Georgia, Washington state, Hawaii and North carolina. Its always quiet when I go.

03-24-2004, 12:31 PM

I am going to agree with the other Canadians it is nice and quiet at our theatres, there might be some loud people but they are usually shut up pretty quickly, usually by me if I am annoyed by it which I am most of the time. I can't stand to be in a loud obnoxious theatre, I use to go to Portland for work 3 times a week so I would go and see a movie in my spare time because I had nothing else to do and I just couldn't take it, I could never figure out why everyone had to be so loud, isn't the whole point of going to a movie is to get lost in it and be entertained?

Us Canadians aren't boring, we just don't have to make noise in a theatre to have a good time, that is what activities out doors are for, and hockey games.

Regarding good movies lately I saw a sneak preview for Girl Next Door with Elisha Cuthbert on Saturday and it was so funny, it was loud for that but it wasn't people talking it was laughter.

Same in the UK we like it nice and quiet, unless you go to our local pictures which is a tad dodgy.oddly I get really annoyed if people make noise during the trailers. Maybe i'm just weird

I had my first experience of a US theatre on Premier night when I was in the States a few weeks back and went to see Spider-Man 2. And yes, people did cheer and clap during the movie, and especially at the end. It kind of took me out of the movie a little bit. But it wasn't too bad an experience. It only happened on the premier night, though. Not during any other showings of other films I went to.

If I've seen the move before, I let the people around me know by saying the lines out loud.

Heh, my brother works at the thaetre and we sat with some of his friends that work there when we saw the first showing of spidey 2. There are some weird people....

what I cant stand is people who are crass and profane in a movie.. Like during spiderman, a couple of guys behind me kept making derragatory remarks about Ms. Dunst and referring to spiderman's superpowered phallus... I really dont like those people.

oh, well i was reffering to these poeple being all hopped up on...whatever...and going on and on to me about how she ate some gum of the parking lot outside even though ive never met her. But thats nasty too. :p

I've never been in a movie with loud and gung-ho people.

Me neither. The most I've heard are occasional fanboyish murmurings, and collective laughter on funny parts.

I'm wondering where the idea of loud U.S. moviegoers came from... I want to go to a U.S. theatre to see for myself if this is true. :\
