A/N: Joyce didn't die and Buffy and Riley never broke up...they are still together.
A/N#2: Thank you to Becki for enjoying my story and suggesting I post it here! :)
Dawn Summers was not an ordinary 18 year old. She was, if it came right down to it, actually over 300 years old. She was Key-Girl. The girl who was mysterious, the one who had to watch everything she did, not just because of this fact, but also because her big sister, Buffy, was the Slayer.
Yep. Slayer Buffy, big sister. The girl who everyone flcoked to and said was wonderful. It often sickened Dawn just how much her friends saw her sister as all protector, all everything. If she was so damned great, then why in the three years that Dawn had been here in Sunnydale, did Buffy refuse to get to know anything about her? The truth was, Buffy had seen Dawn like an inconvenience, a giant pain in her ass that for the past few years, Buffy had had to deal with. Something she didnt' want to deal with, didn't need, and was wishing she could rid. But she couldn't because Dawn was real and her sister, like it or not.
Dawn had decided after three years of trying to get her sister to recognize that she wasn't just a brunette who used her bathroom and her shampoo at times to just get on with her own life. Tonight was a final decision that had come from all this thought and also from her own feelings about the person she was about to see. An adult now, Dawn wasn't whiney anymore and she didn't need to ask Buffy if she thought it was safe. She was just following her heart this time.
Grabbing her jacket, Dawn decided she was going to go out for awhile. Mom was out at a high school reunion and Buffy on a date with Riley, so Dawn left a note on the fridge for mom saying she'd be back later. Her key to the house in her pocket, Dawn stepped outside, locked the door behind her, and walked into the darkness of Sunnydale, on a Friday night...
Not exactly friendly when it came to the dark, even at her age, Dawn watched around her and listened to every sound that existed. As she walked down the sidewalk, on over to the cemetery, she heard rustling sounds of wind hitting the grass, blowing through the trees. A stray cat squalled as it was bit by a dog nearby and took off down the slick blackened street. A street still wet from the Frailey's sprinkler they left on all day long.
Dawn walked farther, around tombstones, in the midst of the cemetery that Buffy visited and was going to come to later that night for Patrol. She ignored that, choosing to think of anything but her snotty sister. Stopping at the crypt door, the infamous Spike's hideout, Dawn opened it with her arm, pulling hard. Stepping inside, she closed it behind her and said, "Spike? Spike, you home?"
Spike was there. Dawn saw him. He was flipping channels and watching TV on the couch.
Dawn smiled and walking over to him in her blue jeans and red tank top, cloaked by a black leather jacket, seh said, "Passions doesn't come on for another hour, Spike."
Spike looked up at Dawn and said, "I know it. It sucks too. Shouldn't you be studying at home for your College Scholarships or something?"
Dawn gave Spike a smile and said, "I can do that later. I came by here because I wanted to see you." For years, Dawn had had a major crush on Spike. And whenever Dawn wanted to see him, she just stopped over and Spike visited with her. He was really cool like that. Now it wasn't just crush material or because he was sweet to her. Now it was actual serious thoughts of wanting to be with him, romantically.
Spike picked up his cigarette and taking another drag he said, "Well you may as well sit down if you're here. I don't have anything to offer you to drink. Not tonight."
Dawn shrugged and said, "Oh, it's cool. I don't need anything. I just wanted to see what you were up to. Whatever it is, I figured it had to be better than what I was up to."
Spike looked inquiringly at Dawn and asked, "What was that?"
Dawn said with a grin, "Nothing."
Spike smiled back and said, "Oh. Well I'm not exactly doing anything wild myself, Dawn. Just watching TV."
Spike flipped off the tube and looking at Dawn he sat back more on the couch and said, "So, what's up Dawn? What's bugging you?"
Dawn took off her coat and looking at the TV that was now black and quiet, she looked at Spike and just from looking in the guy's sexy eyes and his great looking mouth, Dawn wanted to move right over to him and take off his clothes. Just push them up and take them off and kiss his lips and go to bed.
Moving over to him, Dawn looked up into his deep blue eyes and said, "I know that we've been hanging out a lot over the years and that you may nto think of me this way at all...but Spike I do have feelings for you. The truth is I want to be with you."
She looked at him and she waited. Of course there was that pause htat was horrible because it felt like it wasn't going to ever stop. Finally, Spike looked at Dawn and said, "You want to be with me? As in..." He hinted.
Dawn nodded and touching his black shirt she said, "Yes, as in..." Looking away she said, "I"m not sure that other girls have told you that, but I'm a 21st Century woman."
A 21st Century woman was was terrified of what Spike was thinking...
Putting out his cigarette, Spike scooted forward, toward Dawn even more. He spoke honestly, "Well love I have to say I've never had a girl tell me she wanted to be with me. Not openly anyway. Typically I've just convinced her that it was a good idea."
Dawn grinned and said, "Great...so I'm too forward."
Shaking his head, Spike said, "Nope. I actually like it."
Dawn smiled into his eyes and said, '"So I've told you what I think...you've not said a lot..."
Spike touched Dawn's hands with his and looking more deeply at her, into her own, he said, "Dawn I have to be honest. For hte past few years I've seen you as a kid sister to Buffy. I've helped look out for you. We've talked about Buffy and your days at Sunnydale."
Dawn looked down feeling a "I don't like you that way" coming. She stood to stop it and said, "I think you're telling me enough...enough that I feel like an idiot," smilling she said with a blush, "but hey, I've felt like one many times before."
Spike stood and said, "You're not an idiot."
Moving to her quickly, Spike touched Dawn's face with his hand. It happily surprised Dawn and she looked up at him and smiled.
Spike said, "You're sure that you want to risk Buffy's tornado effect from tonight?"
Dawn gently grabbed Spike's button on his jeans and then she touched his lower stomach with her hands. Glancing up at Spike, Dawn said, "If she doesn't like it, she can lump it. I'm going to spend tonight with you and she can just get over it."
Spike replied intently, "Alright." His hand that he had in her longish hair while she said this moved just enough to lift her chin, have her eyes on his again. Looking deeply, Spike lowered his mouth and kissed hers.
Dawn grabbed Spike's shirt with her hands and kissed him back. Spike kissed her again, stronger, much more powerfully. Dawn had never been kissed like that in her life. Well the truth was she'd never been kissed at all, but it certainly was awesomely done!
She kissed him back, liking hs lips, liking his tongue, feeling now like the cigarette, having his mouth, his tongue, his strong body covered in black. Holding onto him with her arms, Dawn kissed him back, tasting his mouth again, and wanting to continue to taste it until she dropped over dead, as he picked her up and carried her into his bedroom.
Dawn had wondered what this room was like. But tonight she didn't care about it. IT could look as bland as ever. She figured it didn't. But tonight, she was in Spike's arms. He carefully lowered her onto the bed. He was lying now on top of her, kissing her lips so hotly. His mouth went down her neck. Dawn dipped her head back and said his name.
He was loosening her red shirt. Dawn felt it. She smiled and watched as Spike pushed it up. Her white bra was gently pulled apart and taken off next. Dawn looked at her breasts then into Spike's eyes, and saw his smile. She smiled back and said, "They look okay?"
Spike kissed her lips and said, "They look okay, Dawn. They look bloody hot...or I guess it would be nicer to say beautiful, wouldn't it?" He grinned slyly.
Dawn grinned back and said, "I like bloody hot myself." She giggled.
Spike laughed along with her, then focusing again, they continued to kiss each other's lips and romantically take off the rest of each other's clothing.
Dawn snuggled closer to Spike when they were naked and said, "This is where I want to be, Spike. With you."
Spike kissed her more affectionately and said, "It's where I want to be too." He kissed her lips again and down her neck, keeping on going, as together they got closer on the sheets...
Buffy Summers was out with her friends, Xander, Willow, Anya and of course Giles, on yet another patrol night. Her date with Riley was over and now it was time to get to work slaying demons and vamps.
Handing out weapons, Buffy said, "So we all know what to do. Where everyone is going to be, right?"
THe group nodded.
Buffy felt weird. She shook her head though and said, "Alright. Well everyone be careful. Meet back at the usual in twenty minutes. Holler if you need help."
"Agreed," they all said and in pairs they moved across the graveyard to their designated spots to fight against the demons and vamps of the night.
Buffy walked with Giles and listened for some, keeping her eyes open. Somehow, though, her heart felt bothered. Something was going on. To someone close...
Giles said, "I wonder why Dawn didn't protest coming tonight."
Buffy looked at him alarmingly and said, "I thought that was odd, but I didn't say anything." Could Dawn be in trouble? Nah! SHe's probably at home bugging mom. Buffy forgot about mom's reunion.
Looking at Giles, Buffy said, "Well I"m not going to worry about it. It was nice for a change."
Giles said, "You know, Dawn isn't going to be at home much longer, Buffy. Soon she'll be in a dormitory and you won't be seeing her around."
Buffy groaned and said, "Why does it feel like this is another Giles lecture of wisdom?"
Giles nervously replied, "Well it wasn't meant that way, Buffy. I just say it because one day Dawn won't be in the house anymore and neither will you. Adulthood brings lots of things our way, we don't know where it will take you or Dawn."
Buffy nodded, knowing very well that nobody's life was a guarantee. And she knew that Dawn wasn't that big of a pain, all of the time, just a tyrant with using her things and then again, being around to aggravate. But...all in all...she wasn't so bad.
Buffy decided she'd talk to her later, after patrol...
Unified as a couple with their arms around each other, Spike and Dawn made love on Spike's sheets. The room was hot and Dawn was sweating, but she held on to him. Spike's movements were new to a virgin who'd never been in a bed before with anyone. But something about Spike's body being right here with hers was nice too. It was romantic and it was fun at times when Spike made his Bloody Hell comments. All in all, it was the most beautiful experience in Dawn's life. She'd waited eighteen years to make love with a guy she cared for -- and she was glad that that guy was Spike...

Chapter Two – Going Home…
It was very dark outside when Dawn walked home from the crypt. Not one star was in the sky, which told her that it was another cloudy one. She could smell rain in the air…great! Moving across the street from the crypt yard to the first street nearest to her, Dawn tried to speed walk toward home.
She didn’t’ want to be outside when it started to thunder.
Two blocks in walking and she heard distant thunder anyway. Dawn looked around her, nervously, hearing every sound she could possibly hear, all of them sounded ten times louder and more fearsome than if she had been on her front porch at home, just passively spending time outside. Though it was summer, Dawn felt the warm air picking up, she felt it on her clothes, in her hair. She heard it in the surrounding trees and in the offhanded garbage that was blown on the street beside her.
She wished suddenly that she could be at home – especially when the thunder grew even louder. Dang it I should have stayed at Spike’s, Dawn thought miserably.
Hurrying on foot, she jogged toward the street that she lived on, then up the sidewalk toward the two story white house she lived in.
Hearing trees opposing the sounds of thunder by their fiercely swaying branches that shook their leaves in response, Dawn all but ran up the final skinny sidewalk, to the steps on the porch. As she figured, the light on the porch was out, nobody had stayed up to see if she was ever coming home again.
Whatever, she thought outwardly, initially just to keep from feeling unwanted right away, Dawn reached the doorknob and turned it. Locked! Dang it!
Pounding on it would just get her questioned for why on earth she was out here at 3 AM, so she figured that wouldn’t be good. What could she do now? Sitting on the porch sucked when she knew any second it was going to rain and the meager attempt of a ridge above her head would show how puny it was as she got poured on like a lab rat!
Where on earth can I go? Xander lived a block away – Willow lived even further from her. She stared at the door then at the sky. What choice did she have?
The distant thunder she had heard on the way home now was even closer and louder and with it was lightning. Of course the lightning was far enough away that nothing got struck down, thankfully, but the fact that it was here at all had Dawn’s heart impulsively jumping, her nervous body on edge, everything inside her afflicted with terror. It was bad enough to have her walking to that wooden front door and risking who knew what from Buffy or from her mother.
“Busted!”
Dawn turned around and there behind her was her pain in the butt older sister, walking up the sidewalk dressed in her usual blue jeans and blue jean jacket, white top and brown stake in hand. Great!
Dawn closed her eyes, then opened them and said, “Busted?” Ask the question back, maybe Buffy will get confused by it, Dawn thought.
Buffy was tired, but not that out of it. She said firmly, “Yeah, you’re busted.”
Dawn was well tired but trying to sound confident, she leveled her blue eyes on Buffy's and replied, “Who says I’m busted for anything? Apparently you’ve been out yourself.”
Buffy stepped on the porch, her hair drenched from the rain and her body matching it with a musty smell of damp rain. She ignored it and said, “I’ve been out slaying. You’ve been out all night. Where were you, Dawn?”
Dawn shrugged and said, “I thought it was nice to get out for awhile. Mom was gone, you were gone. I didn’t wear a watch.”
Buffy rolled her eyes and said, ‘Whatever. Well now that you’re home we can get inside and get to bed. I’m tired.”
Dawn was glad that she was that tired and she walked in behind her but made sure to say to a wet Buffy, “When did you take the role of Mom with Slayer?”
Buffy turned around and said, “Uh! Just get upstairs. I don’t want the role, trust me. I want to get to bed and forget that I was out this late. Mom is in bed.”
Looking around them, Dawn said, “Obviously.” The room was empty and dark.
Buffy said, “Goodnight, Dawn.” She let out her breath of exhaustion and walked to her room.
Dawn went upstairs as well and took a long bath. A warm bath that was wonderful and relaxing. Then after the bath was over, she dressed and went to her room….and climbed into bed.
The next morning, Dawn climbed out of bed, hearing Willow gabbing to Buffy in her bedroom - the rooms were next to each other and the walls nothing more than paper when it came to blocking noise. One look around her bedroom at the messy clothes and the fact that she knew she hadn't done an ounce of laundry in more than a week had Dawn throwing on jeans she knew she'd worn, but from a quick eye appeared okay. Throwing on her burgundy T-Shirt, Dawn brushed her hair as she opened her door.
The door to Buffy's room was wide open and she spotted Dawn, like always, whether Dawn wanted her to or not. Glancing at her with an incredulous look on her face, Buffy said, "Willow it lives! Can you believe it?"
Willow saw Dawn's lack of humor and said with a muffled grin, "I don't think Dawnie likes being picked on just yet. No caffeine. I can relate to that." Getting up off Buffy's bed, Willow walked to her friend, dressed in darker shirt and slacks - in a dark stage. She smiled at Dawn and said, "I'll go get you some Pepsi."
Dawn grinned and said, "Thanks, Will."
Turning to Buffy when Willow was jogging downstairs, running into Joyce, Dawn glanced at her watch and then said, "It's only 9:30, Buffy, and it's Saturday. And I'm living just fine thank you." Feeling good about that, Dawn turned and headed into the hallway.
Buffy walked into the hall after her sister. She touched Dawn's shoulder and said, "That's something else. Where on earth were you last night?"
Dawn turned around and said with her smile, "It's really eating at you isn't it? Well maybe it's my secret for once."
Buffy's eyebrows rose and she said, "You're secret?"
Dawn smiled largely and said, "Yeah, it's my secret. You have tons of them. I'm going downstairs to talk with Willow."
Dawn put her hairbrush on the brown varnished table in the hallway and then jogged herself down the steps to the front room.
Buffy followed behind her sister, not liking having the sneaky shoe belonging to someone else!
When Buffy got downstairs, Dawn was talking with Willow about going to the store.
Mom was listening too and offering things she needed to pick up.
Buffy listened, not saying anything. The things mom was asking for were legit, but Dawn? What on earth did she need snacky food for?
Hell why did she care? Buffy thought. Let her get whatever she wanted. Buffy had to call Riley and see what he was up to.
As Buffy was going to hte phone to call her boyfriend, Dawn looked at Willow and said, "Will, can we talk for a minute?"
Willow nodded, detecting Dawn's tone easily. Walking out the kitchen door, to the porch, feeling a slight breeze in the air, Willow looked at Dawn and said, "What's up Dawnie?"
Dawn looked at Willow and said, "I don't only need Pop when we go to the store."
Willow grinned and said, "Oh that's cool. There's usually a ton of things I see when I get to Wal Mart that I don't think about before leaving the house."
Dawn nodded and then gently touched her teeth to her bottom lip as she turned away. Despite her age, talking with Willow, a girl she'd looked up to for years, seemed hard to do. She didn't know what Willow would think.
Willow said, "Hey, Dawnie...I didn't mean to go on and on. Whatever you need we'll pick up. It's no problem."
Speaking out loud, Dawn said, "We've always talked together, right? About different stuff."
Willow was getting nervous, but she said, "Yeah. It's part of us being good friends."
Dawn took a large breath, expecting a freakish reaction as she admitted this, but having to tell her friend because she didn't have a dime and needed things. Looking at her, Dawn said, "When we go to the store, I need to pick up some...condoms."
Willow rose her red eyebrows and the front door opened and Buffy stepped out, not having heard it yet.
Willow and Dawn turned to Buffy. Then Willow looked at Dawn and saw her dislike, her feeling invaded. She said to Buffy, "Buffy can we have a few minutes?"
Buffy showed her own displeased look but she said, "Sure, whatever. I just thought I'd meet you guys outside if we're going to the store."
Going back inside, Buffy waited.
Willow looked at Dawn and said, "Who's the lucky boy?"
Dawn smiled thinking of this guy that she cared about and she said, "He's not a boy...he's awesome and sweet."
Willow said, "Who is he?" She loved talking about boys with her friends.
Dawn was happy now as she said with pride, "It's Spike! I'm dating Spike. Isn't that awesome?"
Willow was expecting another apocolypse when Buffy found out, but she smiled and said, "It's cool, Dawnie. Do you feel okay with Buffy tagging along as we pick them up?"
Dawn shrugged about to say it didn't bother her at all, but Willow knew Dawn better than that and so she said, "You'd rather not."
Dawn didn't need to say it, so she spoke honestly, "Not really."
Willow said, "Give me a sec."
Dawn said, "Okay. Thank you Willow."
Willow smiled and said, "No problem."
Going to the front door, Willow opened the door and walked inside. Buffy was fighting with the can opener when she looked up and said, "Want to let me in on the secret?"
Willow said, "I can't, Buffy. What Dawn tells me is confidential." And even if she wans't her best friend in the world, she sure wouldn't want to be that girl who told Buffy Summers that bit of news.
Buffy rolled her eyes and said, "Whatever. Well let me get my purse. Mom I'll see you later."
Willow acted quickly, knowing she could sound ridiculous, but doing this for her friend, she said, "Actually, Buffy, I thought I'd go with Dawn this time, just a me and Dawn trip."
Buffy was startled to be asked to stay home. It had to be about the secret. She replied, "If Dawn is doing something that is bad or going to hurt her, I need to know, Willow."
Willow smiled and said, "Dawnie is just fine. We'll be back later. Then you can talk to me about your phone call with Riley."
Buffy grinned wide about htat and said, "Okay. Have fun...better you than me."
Willow ignored that and walked out the door. She enjoyed spending time with Dawnie. Dawn was like a little sister to her and always would be - there was no way she'd tell Buffy anything about Spike. No way at all...
