Recicled special FX are a staple of both SciFi TV shows & films.
In the Trek films they recicled FX quite often as well.

Even if it was recycled, wouldn't most smashed in bullets from a pistol-type gun look fairly similar anyway?

yea reclyed props are used over and over again in many different shows. for one reason it is cheaper then making totally new props and all that.
